Southern’s secret strategy

I guess if you’re Southern head coach Dawson Odums and your team can’t match up with the opponent, change the rules.

“We’re going to play Canadian rules and they’re going to play American rules.”

Wut?  Does that mean they’re going to punt on third down?

I remember Bobby Dodd used to punt on third down?

I remember the 1972 Auburn versus Tennessee game played in a driving rainstorm. UT, coached by Bill Battle, got a lead on Auburn. The field conditions were so wet and the rain was so hard that Battle had UT punting on first down through a lot of the game.

I’ll never forget when UF played at Miss State back in the late 90’s, and UF was absolutely awful that day and couldn’t do a thing on offense. Even worse, they were losing as a huge favorite (and I think they ended up losing the game). Anyway, on 2nd down, the snap went over the QB’s head (or something like that) and it now was like 3rd and 28 from their own 10 yard line. Spurrier went absolutely nuts on the sideline, and screamed for his entire O to run off the field while sending the punting unit in, as he didn’t even bother running another offensive play on 3rd down.

I’m sure someone could look this up, but it was one of the hardest laughs I ever had watching CFB. The TV guys were speechless and didn’t know what was going on, until finally figuring out that SOS was simply pissed at his O and figured they’d better punt now before something else bad happens.

If we never punt, and always kick off deep in the end zone, he’s a non-factor.

“They’re playing really good football. Coach (Mark) Richt has a team that understands the goals that it has set. They understand that this is a year they can possibly reach them and when you watch them on film there’s no holes in what they do. They are an outstanding football team, a well-coached football team. It’s going to take a lot to slow them down.”

What a nice man, that Vince Dooley, to put it that way. 🙂

I hope we kickoff about 10-11 times. Combine that with some suspect coverage we showed on Saturday and it’s not far-fetched to think Quinn might break one.

Early game, less than full and enthusiastic home crowd, nothing to lose opponent, epic clash of titans next week…

…how likely we’ll come out flat. If Lambert misses a few and CBS goes conservative in the play calling then the doomsday dawgs will be howling again.

Don’t care if we cover…win, no injuries, be ready for Bama.

Canadian football rules also notably allow forward motion by a receiver before the snap.

Would expect that he can remain hidden on an impatient aggressive team and hit the small hole to get loose in the second level. You may hope that he will pop out in front of a guy who can change directions as quickly as he can. I would expect that he will run at least one back on us. Hopefully, Isaiah will give us good looks in practice this week for training up on the mighty Quinn.

Wonder what kind of huzzah would go up from their fans if we played that song?

Canadian Football Rules? Maybe they are planning to widen the field and hit our players o-o-b. Hope not.

Doesn’t Bama have a smallish returner on some plays?
