How bad was last season for Georgia? Bad enough that this AJ-C writer, in a column about how many wins it takes for a program to keep its fan base happy, decides not to give Georgia credit for all of its 2015 wins.
Georgia
Last year: 9 wins | Five-year high: 12 wins | Five-year low: 8 wins
- Somersaults: 9 wins
- We’ll take it: 7 wins
- Burn it down: 5 wins or fewer
The Bulldogs are confident they can contend in the SEC East, even with some uncertainty under center. New coach Kirby Smart gets somewhat of a grace year, but the man he just replaced never failed to qualify for a bowl game, and Georgia has recorded at least eight wins in every season since 2011. Pressure’s on.
Well, if you’re gonna fudge the numbers like that, no shit pressure’s on.
Maybe Mark Bradley convinced him not to count the Tech win.
Each win over a “southern” actually counts as a half.

I would say they are counting the win over Southern as a half and over tech as a half. Any school that runs that chop blocking high school offense should be in the FCS.
I know a lot of people want to play the service academies especially Army, but do you really want another game where undersized offensive linemen dive at your 5-star d-tackle’s knees?

I’ll say this. I will not have a “we’ll take it” attitude with 7 wins, unless Chubb, Sony, and al the QBs are injured. No somersaults over 9 wins, either.
A trip to the dome would have me doing somersaults. I’ll take 9 if the wins include Tenn FU, AU and the nerds.

I won’t have a “We’ll take it” attitude with 7 wins. I’ll have a “Honeymoon’s over, Kirby” attitude with 7 or fewer wins. I’m not a “Burn it down” kind of guy unless it’s with the NCAA. I’ll do somersaults over a trip to the Dome and will say that 8-10 regular season wins should be this year’s measuring stick for success.
I guess my question is whether the AUC only considered the regular season. That’s probably giving them too much credit for journalism.

Check the win totals for other schools for the answer to that.

Maybe the math wizards at GTU started punching numbers into their graphing calculators and determined UGA really only won 9. Who can blame the ink stained wretches at the AJC for relying to GTU guys for math answers? Aren’t they all millionaires?
In other news, it certainly appears the standards for what passes as journalism continue to drop faster than Hillary Clinton’s reputation for truthfulness. Henry Grady is spinning in his grave, I’m sure.

I am also. It probably increases the Senator’s click rate by 500% but it connects with the comments already open, and is easy to skip to the post you wish. Don’t have a lot of issues with it, but every 10 days or so it might be down temporarily.

No different from what I’ve read here regularly that our 10 wins weren’t really 10 wins because the schedule sucked. The phrase “Dawg-grading” exists here for a reason.

Considering we had 10 wins and were unranked, I have a feeling Dawg fans weren’t the only ones unimpressed with the win total.

Or maybe we should have been ranked.

No, we shouldn’t have.

Our schedule this year is weakest in conference, and we are talking about less than 10 wins. Heads need to roll should that happen.

You wanna fire our first year coach if we don’t win 10 games?

Do you consider Kirby having to rid the team their soft country club mentality in year 1? #butthurt

Because ‘schedule ranking’ before the season starts is always 100% accurate.
This is the problem with college football writers ranking college football…they lay out a dumb guess and then write stories based on those faulty preconceptions and then, rather than admitting that they were wrong in the first place, write stories about ‘surprises’.
Whew….long winded today, I guess. Shorter version: Let’s see how the year goes before deciding what kind of schedule we’ve got.

Only 5 wins to burn it down? Now that’s dawgraded.
There will be plenty of smoke if there’s only 7 wins, Only six wins will get McGoof fired.

The only somersault for nine wins is from the head coach as he’s thrown out the door.

I bet they wrote 10 and though, nah that can’t be right. No team would ever fire their coach after back to back 10 win seasons.

Let us lose ANY bowl and watch the lunatic fringe come out. That was a pretty big bowl for James Franklin given the state of their program and recruiting. Nothing new but, we got their best shot. 🙂

If you remove the games against teams with a sub-500 record, we were 4-3. The wins were Southern, Auburn, Georgia Southern, and Penn State (Brian McClendon’s win). Yee-haw.

Sure, but what does that have to do with the topic discussed? What does it have to do with the expectations for 2016?
LikeLike
It’s relevant b/c it’s additional data beyond just saying “10 wins”. All 10-3 seasons are not alike. Not sure why that’s confusing.
LikeLike
Maybe I just have a thick skull, but the Senator’s post was a shot at the crack editing staff at SEC Country or the AJC rather than an assessment of last year’s record.
The discussion then became about the substance of the article of what should be a rational 2016 expectation for the Dawgs and had zero to do with a look back on last year’s record.
LikeLike
Looking back at last year has zero to do with determining a rational 2016 expectation?
Seriously?

Then have a rational discussion about an expectation for 2016 than saying 10-3 last year sucked. That dead horse has been beaten to a pulp.
LikeLike
Just so we’re clear…now you’re saying that last year does have something to do with determining a rational 2016 expectation? You just did a total 180. And you’re saying I’m the one not being rational?
Do you want to just hear that last year was awesome and b/c we won 10 games we should absolutely expect to win at least 10 again this year? Would that be “rational” to you?
LikeLike
I stated earlier that 8-10 regular season wins is a rational expectation of this year and that’s not based on anything from last year. 7 or fewer wins would be the end of Kirby’s honeymoon period. More than 10 or a trip to Atlanta in December would warrant somersaults.
I thought 9 regular season wins last year met expectations. I thought we would win 9 or maybe 10 last summer with a mid-tier bowl game. Guess what? That was pretty much right on.

The AJC thinks that a program that fired a coach who averaged 10 wins a year, during a year in which the program won 10 games, will be satisfied with 7 wins and thrilled with 9 wins? Are we sure they didn’t accidentally paste the Tech expectations into the UGA slot?
LikeLike
This why I no longer subscribe to the AJC…..too biased or too stupid I don’t know which but not worth the money.
I as a long time fan I will be satisfied with nothing less than a trip to the SECCG. If we win 8 but back door in I’m fine . If we win 11 but don’t get to the Dome we fired a good Coach/man for no good reason.

LOL. We haven’t been to the damn championship game the last 3 seasons and have only been twice in the last 10 seasons…and you have a “championship game or bust” expectation in year 1 of a totally new staff? Did you have this same mentality for the last decade?
LikeLike
Well, if you have had a championship game or bust mentality for the last 3 years and were not happy with the coach how can you be happy if we don’t go to a championship game in 2016?
LikeLike
Huh? I didn’t have a championship game or bust mentality for the last 3 years. I expected to go at least once during that stretch but not every single year. I also expected to go more than twice in the last decade. That doesn’t mean I expected to go every year for 10 years.
Am I championship game or bust in year 1 of the new guy? Hell no. Do I expect to go at least once in his first 3 years? Absolutely.

But what if the new guy only wins 10 games against an easy schedule? We don’t play Alabama this year.

Come on Crusty we got great talent coming back having lost only one real star,to wit;Malcolm Mitchell ( and yes some very serviceable DL players) and have a monumentally easier schedule when you consider we have UT at home ,got rid of the national champions and substituted a depleted ole Miss team and our only arguable upgrade on the schedule is UNC who will be starting a new QB in a functional away game. Add to that a new Saban lite who has, to his credit, gotten Butts-Mehre to substantially loosen the purse strings and this is an absolute cake walk to the dome. This is not the coaching change where Goff got Dooley’s bare cupboard or even worse Donanan’s totally bare cupboard from Goff. It is totally clear to me that if we are going to keep the same standards we applied to Richt that this season should not allow for regression only progress. I will give Kirby the exact same amount of leeway many on this blog gave Richt….meaning not much
