I get that as sample sizes go, one game is as small as you get, but still, isn’t it nice to see where Georgia sits in 3rd down conversion and red zone conversion percentages this morning?
On the other hand, considering the sample size, this says a mouthful, not all of it good.
The 51-yard pass by Jacob Eason to Isaiah McKenzie was Georgia’s longest pass completion in three years, and the only 50 yard-plus pass in three seasons by a Georgia quarterback. (Todd Gurley had the longest pass completion in 2014, a 50-yarder. )
You gotta admit it was one helluva pass.

Brock Huard had the best explanation for why it makes sense to play Eason. Lambert still plays like a freshman starting his first game. He doesn’t read blitzes and he doesn’t scan the field. Plus he can’t scramble.
Eason left the game with UGA up by 7. He returned down by 10 with our backs against the wall. He does a great job and leads the offense on some great drives. Throwing deep and making UNC respect the passing.
It was disappointing for me to see them put Lambert back in the game at the end. There was a nice opportunity to let Eason go ahead and take over for the rest of the year. I don’t understand the love coaches have with Lambert given his resume.

Agree. With the exception of Eason our QB situation looks pretty damned awful. Sure glad Kirby was able to convince Eason to stick with UGA. And recruiting Fromm over Hockman is a no-brainer.
Last night’s win was great. But I’m more optimistic about our future than I’ve been in a decade.

Lambert goes back in because we were not going to pass and Lambert is a better ball handler than the freshman. Simple really.

I think Lambert protecting the win late was the right call. Chaney wanted a clean snap and hand-off, nothing more.
You’ve got a kid that’s been taking snaps from center in college for 4 years vs a kid that played from the shotgun all HS in his first game.

What I loved was his apparent awareness of the mismatch of Isaiah on a linebacker. Good on the OC for the play call to get the mismatch too. Beautiful toss after a few ducks.

Wasn’t this one of the 3 or 4 games we were supposed to lose? After seeing all the sec east teams play this weekend its evident that as usual the division title is ours if we want it.
Another feather in Kirby’s cap. On a national stage! With a RB who will challenge for the Heisman! In our recruit-rich back yard! Over a ranked team that looks like it can challenge for the acc crown!

There are certain throws that D1 QBs have to make. Lambert seems like a nice guy and and good backup QB, but he can’t make those throws. We have Nicholls and Mizzou up next before Ole Miss – start Eason now and don’t look back.

I’d start Lambert against Nichols but split time between them with Eason playing more snaps in the second half, then make Eason the starter for Mizzou and every game thereafter. This would follow the pattern of when Eric Zeier took over as the starting QB in the early 90s.

As you said, it’s just a 1-game sample size, but … I’m still not sold on Jim Chaney. He was the one coaching staff hire that I was unsure about at the time, and I didn’t see anything last night to make me think he’s the “genius” everyone else seems to think he is.
Like most people this morning, I’m in awe of Nick Chubb. But if (a) we’d like to keep him healthy for as long as possible, and (b) we’re trying to introduce Eason to college football, while simultaneously settling a QB competition, how do you not utilize the TEs more in the passing game? They’re supposed to look at the film this week and maybe make a decision at QB, but … how helpful is it going to be watching film of Lambert and Eason taking turns handing the ball off? We’ve got 5-6 TEs who’d likely be starters almost anywhere in the country, but of the few pass plays that were called last night, many of them were slow-developing routes to the mid-to-deep levels, playing right into UNC’s strengths at DB.
I just don’t get it. I’m glad we won, but I hope we get this passing game sorted out soon. If someone told me that Brian Schottenheimer was secretly calling last night’s game, I’d believe it.

We scored 33 points despite Douglas’ fumble when we were ramming it down their throats and we missed a field goal. We could have had 40+ points even with Chaney not opening up the playbook much. I’d say Chaney did okay.

The offense is still being installed and we’re breaking in a true freshman QB. Of course the playcalling will be a little vanilla in the beginning. We did exactly what we needed to do – grind their D with our running game, win time of pos and keep their offense off the field.
Also Catalina was getting his ass handed to him all night, which prevented us from getting more TEs involved. I hope Pittman switches things up this week.

My favorite thing about that play was how it was schemed up perfectly. That’s a linebacker on McKenzie. That Eason recognized this coverage mismatch is impressive to me.

How many catches did tight ends have? They did block pretty well on some plays though,but thought had read earlier that Chaney will utilize TE in passing game? And Chubb is simply amazing in what he has accomplished.

Nauta had a drop, Woerner couldn’t reel his target in either then left gimpy, and it looked like Blazevich had been released as a receiver on a couple of plays that were blown up. CheeseIck had the front 7 playing much improved, and the OL needed the help. Chaney took multiple shots, they just didn’t work out. I expect they’ll be mixed in more in coming games.

When you’re moving people with the TEs for the run game, no need to start getting crazy and throwing it all over the place. If we’re still doing this after the next couple of weeks, I may pull the fire alarm.
