There are plenty of analytical posts out there about today’s game, if that’s your cup of tea. Ed Aschoff writes a couple of good pieces about Georgia needing to establish the run game and Florida’s problems in the end zone, for example.
But as much as I try to get in the weeds and figure out the keys to the game, I keep coming back to one simple factor.
Georgia needs to show up.
Before you mock me for the depth of that insight, let me remind you not about the games this season when the Dawgs failed to do that, but about the last two games in Jacksonville that I had the displeasure of witnessing in person. In 2014, the players didn’t show up (or at least didn’t after Florida’s successful fake field goal) and ruined what had the potential to be a great season. In 2015, the coaches didn’t show up and Mark Richt lost his job.
There’s nothing that dramatic on the line today. Georgia is playing for little more than pride. But that should mean enough in a rivalry game. Kirby needs to show us that he’s got the coaching touch to point this team in the right direction. I’m not crazy enough to think that showing up in and of itself guarantees a win, but I do believe that showing up means this Georgia team won’t embarrass itself. After the Vanderbilt loss, that’s a good enough place to start for me.
Turn in a solid effort today and build on it, and 2016 won’t go down as a wasted year. Yeah, that isn’t the kind of season we signed up for in December, but it is what it is.
“Turn in a solid effort today and build on it”….and I agree. But this in itself is evidence that our fanatical expectations have been reprogrammed by The Process. Have the players?

I don’t know how to say it anymore. Maybe this’ll work:
Can we please football in such a way that our offense runs plays and their defense doesn’t know what play it is before the ball is even snapped?
Can our defense maybe not make their offense look like they are running new and confusing plays every snap?

+1 That is why the continual rolling over is so sickening. I get it, Spurrier was much better than Ray, and UGA did nothing to address the change of FU’s offense, recruiting, or coaching. But put that aside as idiots not paying attention for a decade, the series has been more UGA than not, and has seen each side have their streaks. Get off your knees Dawg fans, you are getting owned by Gator fans and the talking airheads. Now let’s go get a game that is very winnable.

Dawgs will show up today, question is: has Chaney finally made some adjustments after 7 games? I expect it to be competitive, and would give us a 35-40% chance to win outright. Florida’s defense is stout and that will keep our points low, but our defense is better than their offense so they should also have trouble scoring. We are healthy, had plenty of time to prepare, and should be motivated after the Vandy giveaway. 20-16, not sure who is on top of that but if we are, it could spike us to a decent close; if it is the Hated, the remainder of this year could be tough to swallow.
Go Dawgs!

Dawgs win 17-10.

Honest question here.
Talent is talent and there is little doubt that in the most competitive of games, often times effort and strategy just can’t overcome talents. With that said, I sort of view coaching as a multiplier or divisor of talent. I hate to invoke diving in a coversation about football, but I think it’s a fair parallel in this instance. A half-gainer, performed perfectly, will never out score a marginal 2 1/2 somersault with 2 twists, but we can still judge, to some extent, the abilities of an individual to perform with what they can do. Basically, winning 9 games at Vanderbilt is probably are greater accomplishment than winning 11 games at Alabama.
So, in that context, if we viewed coaching execution and game-planning on a -10 to +10 scale, how do you guys grade CKS & staffs performance to this point relative to talent?
I have to be honest, at this point I actually feel as though we are getting less out of talent than what is possible. I would grade us out, to this point at around -4.

I agree. Everything we were told wouldn’t be allowed to happen by so and so IS happening and, in some cases, more than ever. We’ve been mostly a poorly coached team this year. Seems like Kirby needs to visit the mountain-top choosing guru or something. Maybe spend the off-season figuring out how to better transition from a rah rah sideline coordinator into a big time SEC head coach. At this point, I feel like all Saban prepared him for was how to be his lackey for life. I kinda fear that Kirby was a coordinator so long that it’s all he’ll ever be. What he really needs is an OC who is good enough and self-sufficient enough to run the offense and, right now, I have little citizens our current OC is THAT OC.

I currently find myself being a real cynic and that’s never been who I am. Just give me effort, execution and a decent gameplan and I’ll take whatever results. Nothing crazy….just not run, run, pass every possession. Just not the same formation every time Chubb touches the ball. Am I asking too damn much?!?
LikeLike
Fair question. Have to admit I expected much more from the offense, especially with a healthy Chubb, figuring we could open up the passing game with play action. Getting our running game stuffed with our talent at RB has been the biggest disappointment, and made the offense almost a total fail. I also expected more accuracy from Eason. Definitely a negative number, maybe a -6. The defense has been what I expected, maybe better given our lack of depth on the DL and new ILBs. Give them a +3 against expectations but secondary is below what I felt we would have. STs a big minus on virtually all counts. -9 might be high but it is a bigger miss than even the offense to me. Remind me again about the value of a ST coach.

I’d argue that the overall win / loss results might not be that different if we were getting more out of the talent on hand this year. However – Nichols, Vandy, and South Carolina would have been cakewalks with a 1 or 2 on your scale. Losing to Ole Miss is still likely, but wouldn’t be nearly as lopsided. Tennessee is probably still a toss up. I’d argue it’s fair to say Kirby has probably underachieved relative to talent on hand, but that’s to be expected with a first time head coach. Sucks because we were told that wouldn’t be an issue with any new coach. Think that’s been slightly debunked.

“…show up.” This was the job #1 for Kirby, no? Totally in his control while everything else is an inherited mess. So how’s he done?
UNC…team was ready, showed poise and perseverance. Maybe Fedora pulled his own brain fart, but we capitalized. Remember that we used Lambert efficiently where leadership was needed.
Nichols…near total fail
Missouri…the farther back in the rear view mirror this game gets, the worst it looks.
UT…I’d say the players showed up. Coaches..??
Ole Miss…total fail
USCe…so weird on so many levels, take the win and don’t analyze
Vandy…total fail
I don’t think I’m being unfair. This isn’t about all the other issues and challenges facing the new staff, just a report card on this one metric. And it’s as bad as its been since years with a 9 in them (2009, the ’90’s). I can’t really see how things can turn around for this game. I remember another HC who pulled a radical stunt to get the team’s attention and it worked. Don’t see that kind of creative thinking being part of the process. The happy talk this week has gone back to “Georgia football” as if our reputation has been to play winning at smash mouth football. When, exactly, was that our reputation within the SEC? Effective running and PA passing game plus great LB play is tough football, but that’s not 3 yards and a cloud of dust stuff. How long has it been since our D was “junkyard” worthy?
On paper, we have plenty of talent and play schemes to move the ball on the gators if the OL performs and we spread out. Our D is more than good enough to stop this gator offense. Surely our coaching staff will button up the ST play with 2 weeks to address it. That adds up to a 28 – 14 type of win for the Dawgs. But the actual results on the field thus far point to another embarrassing loss in Jax.
I don’t see Kirby igniting The Celebration II…not his style. So let’s pray and hope The Process 2.0 has something as good or better.

Vandy wasn’t a total fail, we dominated them. Amazing you can lose that game with zero turnovers and 3-3 on FGs. But you cannot put that one on the players not showing up. They were there, on both sides of the ball. I get the 10 points off STs that cost us, but with that domination on all other points make the result a head-scratcher. We didn’t even dominate Nicholls at all after the opening drive. In a way, SC resembled Vandy except for the weird onside kick ending.

Fair enough, Mac. But to your post above, where are you getting your sense of optimism…eyes or heart? Cause I’m not seeing it.

Based on both defenses being better than the offenses they must stop. That should make it a low scoring game, which means it should be close, which means a slight underdog has a reasonable shot. I put us at about 35-40% chance of winning, a ply/break/call away from the winners’ circle. I won’t be upset if we don’t win, but will be if we don’t take this into at least the middle of the 4th quarter. Their offense should not be able to drive the field much on us, and we should have more variety in our offense after two weeks to adjust. With us having more explosive playmakers than they do, I feel we close the STs gap a little so result is….close, winnable game.
I agree we have some hills to climb, and should be an underdog, but this isn’t like Ole Miss where I had no confidence in us having any chance of competing. So I don’t know if I would call it optimism, but better than a Hail Mary/puncher’s chance to me. Will be very unhappy if we haven’t figured a way to modify/diversify our offense after 7 games of film and two weeks to prepare…very unhappy. Time Old Lady Luck threw us a bone in this series.

I am. We held them to 235 total yards and gave up 24 points because they had a lot of short fields to work with. But we didn’t compete because we did nothing, nada, to the offense and only gained 164 yards. Unacceptable, and I think we need to make a change at OC, and it needs to be made now. No excuse for what they put on the field yesterday, no excuse at all. 21 yards rushing with a healthy NC and Sony Michel? And no first down from running the ball, at Georgia?

Having seen how we’ve lost so many games in Jax and how the Gators have played during the Boom-McChompers Era, the obvious primary key for us is ST. On paper, our ST seem outmatched, but our simply following the hippocratic oath on ST will force a limited Gator O to drive the ball to score … unless our O gives the ball up on within either 20YL much less defensive scores. There are not bigger keys of late in the series than ST and turnovers – as the good run D suddenly cannot hold a run only O under 289-300 yards thing from 2014-15 are surely an anomaly.

I actually wouldn’t mind having Todd Grantham back for this game. This was the one game each year he had his defense stoked to the max. Here we are, halfway thru Year One of the Kirby Smart era, and that statement speaks volumes about our confidence in this coaching staff. The honeymoon is definitely over. I think this is more of a matter of not having the right coaches, than not having the right players. Yeah, we have some weaknesses, such as the OL and special teams, but so do everybody else. They can keep Todd Grantham, I wouldn’t mind having Jeremy Pruitt back.

I don’t mean to infer I want CTG back on staff. But I give folks credit when credit is due. I’m saying CTG had his D ready to play at the WLOCP, and they came with a badass ‘tude. Other than that specific game each year, Grantham’s coaching was mostly a train wreck, and his recruiting was worse.
I will say Chaney, Pittman, Coley & Beamer haven’t shown me shit. It doesn’t appear they’ve taken anyone who’s under their care and improved them as a player. With the exception of getting a bit more production from Imac. Many players appear to be worse at their work than previously. For example, who would’ve figured Godwin would be almost invisible this year? For me the jury is still out on the current staff, though patience is wearing thin. If Kirby values his new job he’d be wise to re-evaluate the staff on November 27th – unless he wants to be back at bama as an assistant or quality control guy on Pruitt’s D staff in 2018.

I got what you meant about having Grantham back to fire up the defense for this game. I also remember one of the players calling out the others before the game a couple years ago, I think it was Sean Williams (?), calling them soft. I agree that the coaches haven’t shown shit so far, not just with Godwin not being utilized. They are not playing a lot of guys that could probably help our team, such as Woerner, Holyfield, etc. I mentioned Pruitt because he could damn sure coach up the secondary. They were #1 in the country last year on pass defense, and all the starters returned. We picked up Smith from Alabama to help out. We ain’t #1 this year, not even close, so what is the difference? The coaching.

Vegas, which doesn’t predict a game, throws out a number they think will balance the betting public’s dollars on either side. Then adjust the number as it plays out all week. You probably know that. What happened this week was early money was on Georgia and the line fell to 6 1/2, it since swung back to FU favored by 7 1/2 indicating latter big money of the bad guys. I last saw it at UGA +7 so looks like moving it north of a TD brought some UGA bettors back in. Actual number of bettor has been 61% UGA miost of the week, but I have no way of knowing what percentage of dollars on either side are. Would assume the smaller bettors are on UGA or the line would have moved higher. Saw an early, early line at FU by 9 1/2, my guess is they got a lot of UGA bets and adjusted it before it was offered to the general public on Sunday night because I never had a chance to bet anything above 7 1/2.

I love kirbys recruiting, but I’m seriously worried about his complete inability to manage the clock at the end of halves. Saving that timeout for what exactly????? I’m afraid it doesn’t bode well for basic intelligence or attention to detail, the latter which is probably one of the main reasons he was hired. I’m not completely bought in to this theory, but if two is a trend, what are we at by now? Worried….

Basically the entire staff is journeymen retreads..Chaney is terrible–maybe the worst OC in the SEC this season. Basically it looks like Eason gets no coaching to speak of. The O-Line is the worst in major college football. We have a QB with a million dollar arm with no blocking and nobody who can get open or catch the ball and 2 all-world RBs who get tackled as soon as they touch the ball in the backfield. And the STs….Good Night!! It appears that virtually every position has regressed since last season. The players’ effort was good, however. I commend the team for showing up and giving effort.

Really? Sony Michel. Nick Chubb. Trenton Thompson. The Eason kid who CMR had gotten committed before getting canned. There is nothing wrong with this bunch of players that coaching can’t fix. Hey–I was in favor of CMR leaving but only if B-M traded up. Instead of hiring an established successful HC with a staff he could bring with him to Athens the suits hired SOD Redux who then kept on working at his old job until all the best assistants had taken jobs. So when it came time to hire his assistant coaches what UGA got was the journeymen retreads. I don’t blame CKS for all the bad decisions. I DO blame him for the bad hires that led to the bad decisions. And quit badmouthing Georgia’s players.

Yeah, bunch of bums.
As pointed out, we have an All-American in Pyke, and All-SEC in Kublanow.
We have the following 4 stars among returning linemen.
Pyke
Kublanow
Wynn
Sims
Pat Allen: Rivals 4 star, Scout 4 star, ESPN 4 star, PrepStar 4 star
Sage Hardin: ESPN 4 star, PrepStar 4 star
Sam Madden: 247 4 star
Kendall Baker: Scout 4 star, Rivals 4 star.
Galliard was a 4 star DL
That is 9 Olinemen who were blue chip recruits. Smart, Chaney and Pittman aren’t having to toss a bunch of recruiting rejects out their and squeeze minor miracles out of them. Instead, this staff is coaching a bunch of 4 stars down to playing as stiffs. We were better with Theus at left tackle, no doubt about it. But we aren’t achieving what an All-American, and All-SEC and a bunch of 4 stars should be achieving.
The argument in favor of this staff is, “Yeah, see what happens when we replace our four stars with four stars.”
I am not saying our line is performing at the level its talent says it should. The opposite is true; its performance stinks. But if this staff can’t get anything out of talent a bunch of SEC teams wanted why would I have confidence the staff will do any better with next year’s Oline recruits?
LikeLike
All I can give you is that Pittman has a track record of identifying/developing talent. So maybe Cleveland and Kinley once they develop some.
The fact that none of the other guys you named can bear out anyone of this line I think speaks for itself.
I don’t believe we’re not playing the best guys.
LikeLike
Two possibilities, at least, as to why our oline performance is so bad.
The guys on our roster are so untalented and unathletic that even quality coaching can’t produce good results. Think, Phil Jackson having to play 5’9″, 165 lb me at center in the NBA.
The oline players have talent and were recruited by other quality teams but our coaching causes them to underachieve.
I have researched the “recruiting stars” and posted that data for you. Let’s now look at which other Power 5 teams offered these guys.
Pat Allen: Among others, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Oklahoma and Florida State.
Sam Madden: Among others, Florida, Louisville, Wisconsin, Nebraska and VaTech
Kendall Baker: Among others, Clemson, FSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Wisconsin
Sims: Among others, Alabama, Florida State, Tennessee
Wynn: Among others, FSU, Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Michigan State.
A whole bunch of successful college football coaching staffs disagree with your conclusion that those guys can’t play. Even Auldun Bynum got offers from Auburn, Louisville, Ole Miss and Steve Spurrier.
If you continue to insist that our lousy line play is due to the lousy talent holding back quality coaching, then okay. It appears to me that we have players, freaking Alabama, FSU, Clemson, and Ohio State thought could play for them and our coaches can’t seem to make it work. To use your point, the fact that guys that could be on scholarship at FSU, OSU, Clemson Alabama, Auburn and Louisville can’t accomplish better than they are under this staff speaks for itself.
LikeLike
I don’t know the answer, I didn’t mean to imply that I did.
Maybe it is as simple as bad coaching.
Maybe it is the lack of tackles has too many guys playing out of position.
I don’t think it’s lack of effort.
Like I said, I don’t know what it is–other than a bloody mess.

Exactly right, not a lot of difference in the quality of OL, none of them have been very good for years. We haven’t been able to get a push on anyone in a few years. Our offensive players played hard, including Buata.

We have weaknesses but we seem either too stubborn or simply too incompetent to adjust for those weaknesses.

No way … that 1989 offense had Rodney Hampton. That 1990 offense was absolutely terrible.

Okay. Hampton was very good, but he was injured for a good chunk of 1989. Agree that when Hampton was healthy 1989 was better. I do think that in the Tech and Syracuse stretch 1990 was better. This is sort of discussing if electrocution is better for the condemned than hanging!

We went 4-7 in 1990. There was nothing good about that team other than seeing what Garrison Hearst and Andre Hastings would become. At least the 1989 team went to a bowl game against Syracuse. You’re right … it’s sort of electrocution vs. hanging. I’ll take electrocution because I may not die immediately from the hanging. 🙂

Well, if you have to go back 26 years to find a worse offense, that kinda makes my point.

You said you were an old guy and that this was the worst offense in your memory. You must not have remembered 1990, 1989, or 1979 which are some I can come up with.

Graduated in 89 and have 2 in Athens now, guess “old guy” is relative.
Suffice it to say this offense is not very good.

I graduated from UGA in 1988 and did my grad school elsewhere, so also in the same age range. This is one of the worst offenses in many, many years. Sad thing is they have gaps in talent, but also have enough talent that we should be doing better than we are on the field. The team returned a number of starting players on both sides of the ball. Coaching and game planning/preparation especially on offense are killing us in my opinion.

The offensive talent in our starting lineup today included:
Backs and receivers:
Eason: 5 star
Nauta: 5 star
Chubb: 4 star
Chigbu: 4 star
Stanley: 4 star
Wims: 4 star
Linemen:
Pike: All-American
Kublanow: 4 star and All-SEC
Wynn: 4 star
Gailliard: 4 star
Catalina.
There is some talent there. It is better talent than its results. We are 12th in the SEC in scoring offense ahead of just SC and Vandy.

Yeah….I just don’t get the “talent” argument…..at all. Now, if someone wants to complain about development of it, under either regime, I won’t interfere.

Agree plus don’t forget Godwin, Blazeovich and Michel were 4 stars with extensive starting experience. Yes, we have issues at OT, but no excuse for not being able to put a game plan together that at least gives us a chance to move the ball like we did in the Tenn game, I realize the UF defense is tough, but this issue has been ongoing all year including games against much weaker teams.

CMR royally f’ed this program over with the pathetic OL he left behind. I actually feel bad for CKS for having to enter into SEC battles with one hand tied behind his back.

Good humor there, we won 40 games the last four years with no demonstrably better offensive line. I will grant you, we haven’t had a good offensive line since 2002 so recruiting/developing OLs was a weakness for CMR. But don’t push this off on Richt, we won ugly last year and he should have taken the play calling away from Shotty but we used the weak talent we had ti win 10 as an average for four years (thank you Bobo).
Bark up another tree, and it may a tree that is currently on campus. Think Chaney/Pittman and their scheme/playbook. We are offensively impotent in a way that goes back decades. Michel had over a thousand yards rushing as a backup much of the year.

The way this is unfolding….I actually think we’d be better off had we not fired Richt. If he had to sleep in this bed he made, then when we fired him at the end of this season, at least everyone would be on the same page about where we’re actually at.

You shut your mouth. Had we waited, we wouldn’t have been able to get the animated Georgia-native Saban acolyte that masterminded his national championship defense and used to play safety at UGA under Goff, and may have been stuck hiring the animated Georgia-native Saban acolyte that masterminded his national championship defense and used to play safety at UGA under Goff!

I can’t argue with this … The problem most everyone had with the process after the tech game was the desire for us to shoot for the stars with the replacement. The sane Alabama fans gave Saban a pass in year 1 because they knew what he could do if given time and support. I have a feeling many Georgia supporters would have given an experienced head coach the same benefit of the doubt.
Instead, the circular firing squad is lining up … I never thought Kirby would let the honeymoon period end this quickly. #93KDay seemed like eons ago now.

Greg Pyke was an end of season All-American last year (Sports Illustrated second team) and preseason Phil Steele All-American, and an Athlon preseason All-SEC. He was an end of 2014 season All-SEC.
Kublanow made an end of season All-American team, too, specifically the Jewish All-American team. Admittedly that is such taken from such a small sample that it does not connote what other AA teams connote. He made the AP All-SEC team in 2015 as a second teamer.
Sims was rated as a four star OL by Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247.
Wynn was rated as a four star OL by Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247.
There must be some potential there to coach up to a performance better than we are seeing.

All of what you say above is true. Maybe the adjustment from Sale to Pittman is fairly complicated…seems like Arkansas had a fairly long learning curve under Pittman, did they not?

Dude you should review the OL that McElwain inherited at UF. Something like zero starters and 60% freshman. All he did was win the east in his first year. Stop making excuses and blaming the last guy. And don’t feel sorry for Kirby. There is high likelihood that Kirby is the driving force behind the coaching malpractice and lack of creativity we are seeing on the offensive side. He chose the coaches, set the philosophy, and is clearly involved on that side of the ball. The offense we saw against UT was a mirage.

If I might answer, I sure as hell don’t feel sorry for Kirby, I feel sorry for me. And you are exactly right about what McElwain walked into at Florida, which makes me feel even worse, if that is possible.

This is the same Florida where Boom was recruiting highly rated classes, right? Was Richt doing that at Georgia? Cuz I missed that.

3rd and G specifically offered pity to CKS because this entire season is the fault of an o line riddled with SEC recognized performers and 4 star athletes. Hence my post. But if you need help with Google, it looks like Richt and Muschamp were pretty much equal recruiters, with the strength being on defensive side: http://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/college-football-recruiting/2015/2/6/7987571/recruiting-rankings-ratings-2015-college-football-teams

The players showed up. The offensive coaching and game plan did not. Chaney forgot we could throw to tight ends after the second series. And he and Pittman both should hand over their salary to Chubb and Michel once they get drafted 1-3 rounds later than they deserve. Beamer’s departure from the program better be in the papers the day after our last game.

I know this may be over simplistic but, I sure miss the days when we were a good screen team. I literally cannot remember a single RB screen this year. Today, facing a good and very agressive DL, with two backs that have shown the ability to catch the ball, seemed like a great time to call a few. Slow that rush down and take some of the heat off our young QB.
But what do I know, never been in the arena.

I’ve thrown my hands up on this season. I am more confused than even. With new players, coaches, and systems this teams looks just as bad and even worse. I blame the O-Line the most as I’m tired of seeing defenders in the backfield 75% of all our runs. Where the hell were the TEs after the 1st quarter? God bless Eason because even with his struggles, he’s the only one moving the offense….when the play breaks down. I hate this for Nick, Sony, The defense, and all the dawg fans that made the trip.

Listeed to post game show with Dwodle and Smart.
Were they crying? Sure sounded that way.
Granted the o-line is terrible. And has been since spring. The OC and the rest of that staff are just poor coaches.
I now seriously question Smarts ability to be a HC.
In two games this team has not ran for 100 yards when both are added together. That is totally unacceptable.
UF has a good defense and to a degree so does Vandy.
But there is no way in hell a HC should retain an OC and line coach who get this kind of results. Sorry but not one coach on the offensive staff should be retained for next year.
I would fire Del McGee and Beamer tomorrow.
I do not ever recall this bad of play, coaching, ever at UG A
Do not tell we alums thatthe team needs to be more physical. We have heard those worthless words season after season
The o-line issues started in ’13 and got worse ever yearafterthat. This is their 3rd OC and O line coach in three seasons. In each of those seasons the line play worsened as the season rolled on. It will not be there next year.
This is the worst offensive coaching at UGA in 50 years.
Chaney and Pittman can not fix it. And Kirby is clueless to fix it.
He does not know how. He uses whinning coach talk
Time fire Kirby and his staff.
Get rid of the AD in the process.
UGA is now in the same position it was justbefore they hired Dooley
No longer support Kirby and thr AD.I

Nobody is gonna get fired tomorrow, but at the end of the season, if things continue as they are now, changes will need to be made. Kirby is quick to call out players who he thinks should be doing better. Be interesting to see if he started calling out some coaches the same way.
