Butts-Mehre’s next nightmare?

I don’t think this current scenario is ultimately going to play out by the time the dust settles at next February’s signing day, but I sure would pony up a penny for Greg McGarity’s thoughts if Miami crushed recruiting in the next class and Smart didn’t.

Maybe it’ll be the subject of a future The First Word.

Boy, that would not go over well with a lot of contributors on here!

I pointed this out last week whereas UGA has two recruits total, one 4-star and one 3-star. CMR had 7 three-stars, 8 four- stars and one 5-star at that time. Now they have two more four or five stars. I questioned then if something was wrong with our recruiting this year.

What Richt does at Miami doesn’t really matter to me. I’m sure he’ll enjoy spending the 10s of millions he made at UGA in SoFla.

I’m a Georgia fan. I hope to see Georgia have success. Whether it’s Smart or Richt, I really don’t care.

The point was that Kirby’s one thingy is great recruiting which overrules holding him responsible for the coaching we received this past year and now that thingy seems to be spiraling sideways. Last year the players rallied early to help in recruiting, especially LeCounte. How much help at this time can you get from two recruits who don’t seem to evoke the same leadership in player recruiting as last year’s class did?

Silent recruits – don’t make me laugh. How is their silence supposed to help the team?

I want Kirby and Chaney to be successful because our Dawgs will be successful, but not holding feet to the fire when something ain’t exactly correct isn’t going to help in that success.

Relax. Kirby has yet to fire up his yellow cruit-copter.

8-5 with hang on wins against Nichols, Auburn and Kentucky. Could have easily been 4-8. The negative recruiting has to be monumental.

Dawgs need to be 7-0 heading into the bye week. The schedule is ridiculously easy for any competent well coached team.

I put the odds on Chaney lasting the entire season at about 40%. And if Tucker continues to sit back in that stationary 4-2 then he won’t be far behind.

Yeah that 8-5 record had a horrendous impact on this past signing class. Boy that #3 class ranking really sucked I tell ya.

I’m definitely shocked and scared by this news. Still in recruiting years, we have eons to rectify this. I’ll admit though, the last thing I thought I needed to worry about with Kirby was recruiting. Frankly it’s been his only truly great attribute as HC so far. Time to hit the vent for unsubstantiated rumors about what’s going on.

If Richt was recruiting like that during his twilight years at UGA, he’d maybe still be coaching in Athens. Unfortunately, he wasn’t. Maybe he should have worked harder to keep up. Either way, we’re still paying the price for his last couple of lousy recruiting classes.

Overall Richt was actually an above average recruiter. But he was also a below average in roster management and offensive line oversight.

This is the most important UGA football season in many years, as it will set the overall trajectory of the program for years to come. If CKS succeeds, and wins 10+ games while getting to the SECC, recruiting will be just fine and we will be well on our way. But, if we stumble again like we did in ’17, Smart and the overall program is in big trouble, in which the team is setback for another 3-4 years as we all start to wonder about CKS’s eventual firing and who the next coach will be.

I’ve already stated that this is going to be a great year for us — we will win 11 games while giving Bama a heck of a game in the SECC. My main concern is Cheney, but hopefully the O talent is enough to overcome his shortcomings.

…we will win 11 games while giving Bama a heck of a game in the SECC.

Been there, done that. Didn’t happen. Coach fired. If Rinse and Repeat is the best we can hope for, maybe some of you will finally get the Senator’s point that the Georgia Way is what impedes us, not the HC on the sidelines.

Or maybe we’ll grab Boom and try this yet again.

The state is qb heavy in 2018 and we don’t look like the kinda place where a qb can make noise anytime soon. We need to recruit to needs in 2018. Get that beast of a guard in. (Jarmelee Sayler sp?) and Zeus. We need a big time WR or two. After that we need numbers at DL and LBs.

For CKS the first real shot at a no. 1 class comes in 2019. Going to have to win the east in 2017 to set that up IMHO.

CMR recruited 4 and 5 stars while he was here. You know- super 5 star studs like Richard Samuel and Brandon Smith whom he developed into hall of famers and multiple SEC championships-oh wait. South Florida is fertile ground and I’m sure that he will land top 10 classes, just like he did here. He will then guide them to nice mid-level bowls and moderate success, just like he did here. I wish him the best, but I am far from worried about whether he will be.

If we don’t do something on the field this season that matters (win the East), does our recruiting really matter? I’d almost rather have 8 and 9 win seasons and meh bowls with recruiting classes ranked in the 20s than classes ranked in the top 5. If we are going to suck, let’s suck all around.

I have questioned the accuracy of those recruiting class estimates for years, even after the kids all signed. The Dawgs always have recruiting classes in the top 10 yet Tech has beaten the Dawgs 2 out of the last 3 times Tech played Georgia and Tech can’t crack the top 25. Vandy has beaten the Dawgs 2 out of its last 4 games with Georgia and it has recruiting classes ranked lower than Tech. First, lots of 4-5 stars on paper end up not panning out. Second, it takes coaching to get the most out of players.

Your second point is why Richt isn’t in Athens anymore. I look for him to repeat his experience from Athens in Miami. He’ll have good talent, be a perennial preseason favorite to win big and lose a game or two he should win that will keep him out of a championship. Five years from now, he’ll be averaging 10 wins a year and the writers and Miami fans will be talking about “this is the year we win it all” and “if only” when they talk about how close they came to winning a championship.

If Kirby doesn’t win the East this season, I’m not sure he’ll ever win anything of consequence. The East is a mess this season and our West opponents are very beatable. We have more talent than any team we will face, even considering our offensive line. I’m pulling for Kirby but he has no excuse to not win the East this season.

So all these kids will be playing for Richt and not the Gators which is what matters. Nice catch there Senator. Oh yeah.

Kirby has all of his guys staying silent. They are all going to commit at G Day this Saturday. We will vault into the top five easily.

I have this information from a very reliable source.

    Or i made it up.

Richt’s doing what any coach that hopes to be successful at Miami has to do. 15 out of 16 commits are in-state, with 11 of those from South Florida. The only teams to compete with in the ACC are Clemson and FSU. Keep the local talent in town for a couple of classes and he should have more talent than Dabo and close to equal to Jimbo. Win the conference and make the playoff and who knows? Maybe Richt could finally could get the breaks that always seemed to go against him. Still no OT’s on that commit list though, guess some old habits die hard.

You make it sound like if we looked back historically we’d find post after post of toy extolling the virtues of Mark Richt and keeping him… But we all know that isn’t true. So… What’s your point exactly?

I would like to know why any of you think that UGA will ever field an elite football team. We never have, other than the 3 years when we had the best college football player of all time. What do you think is the catalyst that is going to move our program to the next level?

I’ve got concerns about 2017 and beyond, but right now recruiting isn’t one of them. Kirby’s already shown he can recruit and close well. If he only lands 2 recruits per month til signing day he’ll fill all our available slots.
