It appears the Georgia-Florida game will remain in Jacksonville five more years. The pot is definitely being sweetened.
The latest agreement in the storied rivalry has a total of $2.75 million in incentives for the schools over the life five-season contract. Each school will receive $125,000 as a “signing bonus” and $250,000 in guaranteed payment each year to both schools, which didn’t exist under the prior contract.
Both schools are also getting an increase in their travel and lodging stipend to $60,000 – which is a $10,000 increase from the previous agreement. The city is covering the University of Georgia’s air travel up to $350,000 each year.
And some of you thought Georgia was at a disadvantage flying to the game. Not in the way it matters to Butts-Mehre.

Several years ago a friend of mine took took two 80-something year old ladies back from Jacksonville to their condo on Amelia Island because they had missed their bus. Both these women were grads from the late 30’s or early 40’s and it was unquestionably one of the most informative and enjoyable trips of my life. The differences in what was and was not allowed between our various periods of matriculation( no Weasel there is NOTHING sexual about the word matriculation) was massive. It was clearly a different era when females were treated as fragile flowers but they still had fun and got their degrees. I hope I;m doing the same when I’m their age. I’m only working on 43 WLOCPs….. twenty more at least.

Only youngsters want the game moved. The rest of us recall how we basically owned Florida until Spurrier started coaching them. And I guarantee you that to this day Spurrier remembers UGA in general and Bill Stanfill in particular.
For me, one of the great side benefits to attending UGA as an undergrad was being able to give my father all kinds of hell about the WLOCP. We didn’t win every single game, but we won every game that counted; either we secured an SEC title for us or we knocked Florida out of one, or neither team was very good and it didn’t matter much. So, during the 1980 game with time dwindling and UF in the lead, my father makes a long distance call (remember those?) to me and starts gloating, “we got you this year!” and other stuff and I just mumbled that the game wasn’t over yet. Then Lindsay ran. Then I went to call him back, and the line was busy. And it was busy again, and again, and stayed busy for about three hours. When it finally rang (yes, I kept trying – I can be an asshole, too) my mother answered the phone and simply said, “It’s still too soon”.
For those who will say that that kind of memory can happen with a home-and-home series, too, I will agree. Except that there are too many other great things about that game in Jacksonville, and that the main reason given for wanting to move it is that ‘it’s basically a home game for them’. It really isn’t; we have owned this game in the past, and just have to get our minds right, and not do some of the stupid stuff we have been doing.

Everyone forgets how Florida fans practically begged to have the game moved from Jacksonville. We need to go down there with the attitude of destroying anything in orange and blue. Unfortunately, we haven’t played the last 3 years with that mentality. We had a mental edge on them especially in 2012 and 2013 because TG3II brought a physical toughness that had been missing. I still think we beat their @$$3$ in 2014 if Gurley returns like we did to Auburn later that season.

Your opening sentence is dead on, and factual. This is where the UGA fans are as bad as FU fans. I get the improved home schedule position, I just don’t find it as the true culprit as it is only factual once every two years and ignores the other opportunities to upgrade the quality of games without taking down a great/unique tradition. It is the “unlevel playing field argument that is contest.

Part of your 21 wins is a 2-0 mark when the series went home and home, so that’s not much of an improvement.
As far as spending money goes, genius, UGA is getting millions of dollars from the city of Jacksonville, which, the last time I checked, is located in Florida.

My point on the money is that it’s a two-way street. If the series went home-and-home, it wouldn’t be as financially productive. Also, there are plenty of fans who spend their money in south Georgia instead of Florida for that trip.
As far as enlightening us about the mediocrity of the athletic department goes, I’m afraid you’re a little slow on that front. Just read this blog for the past year or two — we’re way ahead of you there.

By the way I openly admit that over the last 20 years UGA had better teams than us but we absolutely KNOW that y’all CANNOT beat us in JAX on a consistent basis!! We KNOW we are going to win in JAX and y’all are HOPING to win in JAX. The game in JAX has become mental for both teams – mentally good for us and mentally bad for y’all. I hate to agree with him Senator, but every Dawg fan under 40 (0-10 year olds in the 80’s don’t count) has never really seen us do squat against them and it’s tough to watch. And it’s even tougher to get motivated about going to Jax to watch “The War for the Oar” or “The River City Shootout” or whatever name they try to bring up to avoid calling it The WLOCP. I for one don’t want the game moved but it’s hard to revel in the glory days when you’ve never really experienced them.

More to the point, I’d rather go to Jacksonville than Gainesville. I actually like the tailgate situation in Jax. It’s much more organized and fan friendly than Athens. It would nice if there a tree here or there, but it’s ample and gives easy access to the stadium. I am more than willing to get on ADGM’s case about a lot of things, but this isn’t one of them.

I wonder if the powers that be have ever given any thought to putting the game up for bid. If we’re traveling to Jacksonville why not New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Nashville, or Charlotte? I guess when you’ve got free labor you don’t have to worry too much about getting market value for your product.

My preference is for the game to stay in Jax. The Cocktail party is, in my opinion, one of college football’s great traditions. I think CBS agrees, the number of times they’ve picked up the game. However, I sat through the game in Athens when Spurrier ran up the score. It would make me happy if we had a shot at revenge for that and got it in Athens.

JC, wasn’t the Iron Bowl a great tradition when it was played at Legion Field in Birmingham? Bama beat Auburn like a drum (with a few notable exceptions) until Pat Dye finally had the balls to say “enough!” They made that game home and away and voila, Auburn started beating Bama regularly. Sometimes it just takes a change of venue to shake things up. But they still play that game every year and they still call it the Iron Bowl. If the WLOCP moved to home and away they would still call it the WLOCP and it would still be a great tradition.
