Jere Morehead just passed along the official statement from the University System Chancellor regarding the new campus carry law. Key language:
… Even license-holders may not carry a handgun into the following locations on college/university-owned or leased property:
- Buildings and property used for athletic sporting events. This exception includes stadiums, gymnasiums and similar facilities in which intercollegiate games are staged (but does not extend to so-called “tailgating” areas where fans may congregate outside the gates of the sports facility)… [Emphasis added.]
Stay wary, my friends. Especially after a long day of drinking.
So, who will be the first to offer Bulldog-themed bullet-proof vests? Could be a big seller.

But the area surrounding GA tech is a little higher crime rate than in Athens, just in general, correct? So it should be mandatory to carry a gun at tech.

There are plenty of areas very close to campus where you wouldn’t want to be without a gun. Athens has one of the highest per capita concentrations of public housing in Georgia. There are a lot of “urban youth” within a one mile radius of campus who have no problem preying on students and anyone else they see as an easy mark.
LikeLike
We all know you meant black kids when you say “urban youth” and I don’t see why the existence of public housing near the campus affects whether you can or should carry at a tailgate. Your post is inflammatory.
Further, your statement that these black kids are “preying” on students and anyone else they see as an easy mark is just plain prejudicial stereotyping. I graduated 15+ years ago and am a season ticket holder, and I don’t hear anyone complaining about robberies or any other instances of being “preyed” upon by “urban youth” on any regular basis, certainly not enough so to warrant carrying to protect yourself. Athens is a gem and a safe place.
Your post, basically, is that there’s poor black kids near campus so carry a gun, just in case. I find this untethered to reality, dangerous, and, frankly, very prejudiced.

I lived in the “Iron Triangle”(within biking distance of campus and downtown)/ my last 3 years in Athens in a house full of white guys. We had a break-in and the occasional crack whore asking for $2, but for every bad incident, I can think of ten instances of neighbors inviting us over for BBQ, discounts on their in-garage barbershop, and helping us fix broken down cars. I’m not naïve enough to believe crime doesn’t exist, but seeing poor areas as a monolith is just silly.

I met an older black man that lived in the triangle and he shared with me how some white guy moved into his neighborhood and SOLD his car so that he could BUY a bicycle!
He was beyond flummoxed but it always makes me chuckle on the different perspectives of folks.

Are your referring to the City of Atlanta or immediate area around Ga Tech which is undergoing one of the most startling examples of urban renewal in the country? I mean I must have missed all of the roving gangs of criminals hanging out on Marietta Street while I was distracted by the steady line of $100K foreign automobiles lined up for valet service at The Optimist, or Bocado and Bartaco. I am surprised that companies like Chick-fil-A and CookOut would invest millions of dollars in new outposts of their restaurants on Northside Dr. right next to the recently renovated Burger King and McDonalds just steps from the crime ridden GaTech campus. I keep hearing that no one ever visits the College Football Hall of Fame or the World of Coke or the GA Aquarium or the Civil Rights Museum (all within walking distance of Ga Tech) due to high volume of crime. Last time I went to Atlantic Station, I thought I was in a war zone. Westside Provisions district? So much like favela.
Ga Tech must regularly be at the top of the list of most dangerous college campuses in America right? Probably 2 spots higher than Athens.

What are you the fucking pres of the Chamber of Commerce? I understand the concept of urban renewal, as I have 2 grown children who don’t seem to mind gridlock and live near Oakland Cemetery. If they choose, they can carry a weapon or not. Why should my law abiding 21 year old not be afforded that right, particularly on the Ga tech campus where the incidences of violence and robbery are well documented?
LikeLike
Because the incidences of violence are not well documented just sayin. You know how many violent non-sexual crimes Ga Tech has per 1000 students? Less than 1 per 1000 you dumbass.
Also I never said that your precious snowflakes couldn’t carry, I just challenged your fucking evidence of violence on the Tech campus. If the Tech campus and the area surrounding it was so violent you there wouldn’t be all of the growth but on and off campus. BTW, the area is going to keep on getting better given the level of investment for the Benz,
I had dozens of friends who went to Tech in the late 80’s/early 90’s (when the crime rate in Atlanta was far worse than it is now) and I can count on one finger the number of them who were victims of a violent crime.

Since 66% of gun deaths are suicides, your 4 kids are far, far more likely to shoot or kill themselves than a crook. Any reputable security professional would instruct your kids to simply give the robber what he/she wants, rather than escalate the situation to a life or death struggle. The idea that a college kid is prepared to use a gun appropriately in a robbery situation is laughable, and probability extremely remote. But I guess that’s exactly why gun makers spend so many millions promoting their product, and exactly what they want you to believe.

Seems a perfectly logical interpretation to me, don’t understand why that would upset anyone. I also don’t think that law, or the statement from UGA, will change anything at all for almost every fan coming to games. Those who carry guns as a matter of routine, or for trips, would most likely already have a gun in their car, and few would take them into the stadium or arena.

As long as you put up a tall sign that says “Mac – Gun!” above your tailgate site, with a finger pointing down to your location, I welcome your carry. I’ll be the guy whose wife is carrying a sign above me with a finger pointing up that says “Shoots Blanks!”

You people do realize that there is NO SUCH THING as LEGAL carry (open, concealed, licensed or not) when the carrier has alcohol in their system, right?
So the moment someone is carrying and consuming alcohol at their tailgate, they are committing a serious crime and if cited, will have their carry permit revoked along with criminal charges filed
Honestly I’m not the least bit worried about the people carrying legally. It’s those that pack heat illegally that should be the concern. And those people probably weren’t paying attention to campus carry laws before or now
Most people who are ignorant about firearms laws assume that every drunk red neck is somehow now going to be able to legally carry a firearm. That is simply not true

Exactly. I’m more concerned about the drunk getting behind the wheel of a 2 ton bullet.

That would be a good point if it were true. Some states have no laws on this. Some use the same limit as driving .08%. Some say you can be higher with a gun than for the purpose of driving. Some say any alcohol and they can take your gun. Some simply say “drunk” or “under the influence” which isn’t the same as the moment you taste beer. Georgia falls in the last category I believe. You can drink, you just can’t be “under the influence” whatever that means.

The thing is, it’s a dumb law not for what it allows but for all of the restrictions that come with it. What’s even the point? You can’t conceal and carry into a sporting event facility. You can’t conceal and carry into any faculty or staff offices. And while you can conceal and carry into classrooms, you are supposed to first check to insure that no high school students are taking or sitting in on the course (or else you can be cited).
So, basically, this law allows anyone that just happens to be walking through campus to conceal and carry. But if while on campus you plan on going to class, visiting a professor or staff member, or going into a football, basketball, baseball, etc game then you might as well leave it at home or in the car.
It’s like they passed it to appease gun lobbyists while trying to not piss off all the anti-gun folks at the same time…

Are people likely to shoot others really the kind of folks who obey the letter of the law of where and when to carry? I’ve got to be honest. I would feel less at ease in jail, where weapons are prohibited, than with some armed Georgia fans in Athens.

The standard is if you’d feel more at ease than if you were in jail? Wow, that bar is low.

You missed the point. From the perspective of gun control advocates, jail should be the safest place in the world, no? Jails don’t just rely on signs saying, “No weapons, please.” Jails invasively search every person to eliminate all weapons. And yet, they still exist in prison.
But changing a sign in a tailgating parking lot from, “No weapons, please,” to “Legal carry only, please” somehow strikes terror into the heart of these shrinking violets. I never thought of myself as particularly macho, but I just can’t get worked up to be as scared as some of you.

If they were carrying on campus before this law was passed, they weren’t compliant with school policy. This is supposed to reassure me?
LikeLike
Sure. Why not? Two types of people carry guns. Those who do it for self defense and those who do it to threaten harm to others (criminals). And criminals aren’t very likely to care about school policy.
I routinely carry in areas where I’m not supposed to. I don’t worry about it. I understand that the odds of my needing a weapon in self defense are very long. But if I do, the knowledge that I will be harmed while abiding by school policy just isn’t very reassuring. If I ever need to fire my weapon in self defense, I certainly won’t mind getting a ticket for failing to abide by a policy that intends to make me more vulnerable than I need be. But I am glad that the law is being changed to prevent me from getting the ticket.

Don’t we have a police dept. on campus? Your excuse for self defense would extend to everyday life everywhere we have policing depts. and that would mean you are waiting to protect yourself from an invading army. Nice.

Sure. There’s a police department. But they tend to be concentrated at the stadium, rather than around tailgating spots. But yes, if you’re in a life-threatening situation, you can certainly call the police, who will come out and draw a nice chalk outline around your body, if that makes you feel better.

Overly simplistic, in my view. Some carry out of ego or insecurity, which is different from legit self-defense.
Sorry, but I’ve seen way too much carelessness with weapons over the years to be as assured about them as you are.
