Projected offensive depth chart

I don’t want to get overly giddy about it, but I’ve got to tell you it’s been a long time since I’ve felt this comfortable looking over a Georgia preseason depth chart for the offense.

Yeah, I know there are some big name departures, but there is also plenty of experienced depth ready to step up and fill in the holes.  If I had to point to my biggest concern, I guess it would be seeing how Andrew Thomas handles the switch to left tackle… but then I remember how confident Pittman sounded about it a couple of weeks ago.

How are y’all feeling about things pre-G-Day?

Football seasons are getting to be like presidential campaigns. Speculation for the next one starts the day after this one ends. OTOH we’re jonesing and they know it. 😉

The best collection of offensively lineman we have ever had on the roster. Fact.

Couldn’t agree more. I think Pittman will be doing a lot of experimentation in the Spring. I think he’ll have a hard time keeping Salyer off the field at LG and I fully expect Mays to push Wilson at RT. Galliard made significant strides in Year 2, but got exposed by both AU and Bama’s interior DL. We need more size and strength at the Center position. Johnson and Hill could push both Fogarty and Galliard. In short there’s a lot to be excited about.

Yes, quite the position of strength…for the first time ever. Only thing I think that needs to change is having both Centers on the depth chart as Seniors. Critical position for any OL, would like to get some reps for whomever looks to be the 2019 candidate. We should have some clean-up time available in a few games this year.

        • We need to take a page from The Process a few years back and move a big ole hog that was slated for a tackle spot in to the Center position. Heck if Ben Cleveland weren’t doing so damn good at right guard, I’d say move him. I don’t know, maybe he’d soar to even bigger heights at the Center position and we’d certainly have somebody that knows the whole LOS acting as the chief.

I keep seeing projections of Holyfield to FB, but other than that play where they erroneously called him for blocking below the waist(?), is there any evidence that the coaches are even considering that? It just seems like a limited role in Chaney’s new offense.

No. Just another case of a clueless beat writer.

Holyfield will be a part of the 1-2 punch and probably rush for 1k.

we’re gonna be seeing a lot of camera shots of The Champ… because i think his boy will be toting the rock a lot. I didn’t realize until yesterday that he was 2016’s #2 running back in America. It’s hard damn work being this rich.

I agree. I think Holyfield will cement the #2 spot at RB and will be a force all season. I’ll be interested to see how Zeus recovers from knee surgery.

          • I am of the opinion that unless Zeus shows that he is absolutely ready to ball out by mid-season that he should get a redshirt………EVEN at the risk of another Knowshon Moreno scenario where he departs after his RS Sophomore year. But it’s really NOT the same—Knowshon wasn’t hurt and we shouldn’t rush any part of the rehabilitative process, particularly with the depth we have. Plus I’m just not sure that would be as much of a guarantee as it was 10-12 years ago by nature of our platoon approach and a seeming need to demonstrate a clean bill of health and complete recovery to the NFL…a la Chubb.

            • Meaning: I’m not totally convinced, despite ALL the elite talent we have had, that a running back sharing carries for a mere 2 season would be a lock for a departure. Now, if everyone else got hurt for a substantial period of time and he got to be the feature back…….then all bets are off. But that and the knee injury, I don’t think a Redshirt is unreasonable. It also might be in the best interest of the student athlete (gasp at the thought).

Possibly but he isn’t near as talented as Swift or White. Very good and could start for so many other programs. A hard runner. But he isn’t elite imo. Just go to practice or look at him on the sidelines. There is a difference, especially in his lower body.

  4. I do expect Fromm and our passing game to evolve a bit more next year, but I do worry a bit about who is gonna be that guy that you can do the deep backshoulder throw to and let him just outmuscle the DB and make the catch. Without Wims this past season, Fromm’s stats on deep throws would have been different for sure. I’m guessing at least 10-15 of his deep pass completions last year were that type, where Javon just outmuscled the guy for the catch. Ridley filled in admirably but most of his catches were intermediate stuff, I’m not sure he can be the same physical presence (both in the passing game as well as run blocking).

Again I expect our offense to evolve some, and maybe we don’t have to rely on having a physical guy on the outside for those catches. But with our offense it it’s current form, that’s a big hole to fill.

If that’s our biggest question mark though, that’s a far cry from how we usually look this time of year!

If not this year, 2019 for certain. We are really stockpiling OL talent. As this begins to show up, Pittman’s reputation will continue to grow and he will be a magnet for many years to come. Pay the man, he is a critical piece and I sure don’t want him looking around.

The OL will truly have that competition that Kirby keeps talking about. There is a lot of talent that wants on the field next year and they all will be in the weight room, at the training table, and working on their weakness this offseason.

Maybe better. than the 2017 Offense?.

I think much better. We restricted what the offense could have been in 2017, imo. I understand the concerns about Chubb/Michel leaving but we have a lot of talent available and no reason to sit on our potential as I feel Chaney/Smart did. Offense has tp play a bigger role in 2018, we need to let those ponies run (and throw/catch.)

And not one of you has mentioned that all important stat, QBR. Gimme some Spring Game with the QBs competing for our favor as to who we want to be the QB for the season. It’s important to us in our unique evaluation of what the team will do.

The Peanut Gallery has started a slow chant of “QBR!, QBR!, QBR!…..”

    • I’m sure Justin Fields is going to ask to wear a contact jersey … that’s the reason he should be the starting QB over the guy who led us to the national championship game 3 months ago. I can see the trolling now!!!

Running back takes a step back. Not sure how big. Hope that Cook comes in and is a good back.

Hardman, Godwin and Ridley are three solid options at WR, but there isnt much after that. also seems like Chigbu has been here forever.

TE, doesnt matter we rarely use them other than to block.

    FB, same as TE.

OL looks great. lots of high end talent and some depth.

    QB should be good regardless.

What are the odds that we start to see OL rotation next year? We were 5 deep this year, with an occassional flirtation at RG until Big Ben locked it down.

I’d like to see more depth develop.

    • How many programs with good offensive lines rotate?

I would think as hard as it is to develop timing and coordination between the linemen, that rotation on a consistent basis would be a difficult thing to achieve.
