Head vs. heart in Baton Rouge

Yeah, this is one of those games.  As the advanced stats show, Georgia is the better team today.  My head looks at the numbers, considers how ridiculously fast and athletic this team has shown itself to be all season long, remembers that Georgia took control of its last game and rested its starters for a quarter while LSU was involved in a slug fest against Florida and concludes that the Dawgs cover.

My heart, though.  It’s a conference road game, in one of the toughest venues in the country.  It’s probably LSU’s season at this point, at least in terms of maintaining the one-punch hope of overtaking Alabama somehow in the West.  It’s also against the most talented team Georgia has faced to date.  All that adds up to making my inner Munson quite nervous.

I figure both teams are going to try to do what everyone expects of them:  establish the run on offense and stop the run on defense.  Strangely enough — I say that in the sense that it still takes some getting used to — it’s Georgia that has the advantage in the trenches.  If the Dawgs are more successful on both fronts, it will be a long day for the home team.

I haven’t been overly impressed with Joe Burrow, but up until last weekend, he certainly hasn’t been a liability for LSU.  His receivers haven’t given him the best support, a trend that I would welcome continuing against the Dawgs, but he’s got the ability to do some damage with a little tuck and running.  Contain hasn’t always been a strength for Georgia’s defense, so, yeah, that’s one area of concern.

That being said, Georgia has been a far more explosive offense this season.  That, combined with the defense’s proven ability to play bend but not break ball, is what has me thinking it’ll wind up being Georgia’s day.  (My usual caveat about turnovers applies, of course.)

I’m heading out the door for Baton Rouge soon.  Consider this the usual invite for your game day observations in the comments section.

  1. The pundits are making this feel like, “But, but, but Georgia has never played in Tiger Stadium.” I haven’t seen a single prediction for LSU that goes deeper than that.

    Sort of feels like “Sandstorm.”

I’ll take the Jimmies and Joes with the better coaching staff over any mystique associated with Death Valley.

Dawgs cover in a game that’s not as close as the final score indicates.

That is a good description of his posture, nicely done. If this were just a chess match between the two coaches matching wits, it would undoubtedly be a blowout for UGA. But they are closer in the matchup when it comes to inspiring their young men, and O has an edge today because he has a recent example of how they let one get away. So, that is our first “we will get their best shot” of the day. How will we react to getting smacked in the mouth? Don’t know yet, we haven’t been in a street brawl so far this year. A lot depends on our team leaders, imo.

Heart: Alright boys, this is the game we had circled to finally open up the playbook and show the country we’re the only thing that can stop ‘bama. Statement game. UGA 45-13.
Head: The Valley, a banged up defensive front that will get winded and gashed, our pound and ground only slows down the scoreboard. UGA 30-20.
But hey, as long as the Dawgs come home 7-0, injury free, and a week off to get ready for UF, I’ll be happy.

I agree with all, we have the better team so we should prevail against a “desperate to save their season” group of good athletes in the toughest environment in the SEC. But, we were almost certain to drop 1-2 games this year simply because that is what happens to teams to young teams that haven’t looked like they are hitting on all eight cylinders, so this looks like the one to me where the Dawgs are most likely to stub their toe. Either here, or in Lexington, hopefully not both.

Doesn’t mean today couldn’t be that “ND moment” for this 2018 team where they scrap and claw enough to win a close one, and gain the confidence to leap forward. Also, doesn’t rule out that we finally play our first A game for the full 60 minutes and win decisively. Not waffling, just saying this game could be many things so I am staying with what I have seen and say this is closer to a 50/50 outcome. Rationale iswe have shown flaws that indicate we have weaknesses that against an opponent built like they are, in a situation like this, says we could drop a game we probably shouldn’t. So I am being like I am from Mizzou, show me guys.

If you want to get nervous, consider that Alabama has taken 7 in a row from LSU, some comfortably. But, almost every single game in Baton Rouge has gone down to the wire. Alabama having to come from behind more than once. It’s a tough place to play. I think we win this game, but I’m a long way from believing we walk the dog in New Orleans.

And that is what I have been saying, this is the toughest place to play in CFB when they are in the hunt, or think they are. How many times has Alabama gone down there and had to fight for all 60 minutes despite having a superior group of athletes? Need to take that crowd and the adrenaline rush for the players out early or prepare for 15 rounds. Willy Brice wasn’t intimidating, this place is. We can overcome it, but not with the focus I have seen so far.

Kirby tries his “impose our will” bullshit against LSU and it doesn’t go well. We struggle and trail by 7 at half. The “in game” UGA comment threads are in full melt down mode and some are predicting UGA will drop football next week. Second half Kirby unleashes Fromm and UGA’s devastating passing game. By the end of the third quarter the game is well in hand and we win going away. A sausage and beignet gorged Orgeron has a massive MI on the sideline and Kirby has to save his life by running across the field and given him mouth to mouth. We’re all so proud to be GA Bulldogs.

That’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it.

Absolutely a miserable half of attempted football.
Dropped passes, missed open receivers, bad snap from center, horrible ball spotting by the refs..A plain and simply stupid faked fg..an over hyped QB, punts kicked out of bounds on a regular basis, blown pass coverage and so forth and so on
There’s no where to go but up..If we don’t score 8 on the first possession of the second half, I’m ready to concede this one (really, I’m already resigned to the fact that this is 95% already a “L”).
I just hope we make UF pay dearly in two weeks.
Not mad at the team. I know they are trying and it’s just snowballed on them..but I DO think the snowball started rolling on the faked FG attempt.
I told the others that was the early turning point in a game in a place where you just can’t do that shit.
Hope we can at least make it respectable and then run the table on the SECE.
Even if we should somehow come back and win..I stand by my comments about this debacle of a first half.

This is on Fromm, and I guess on Chaney, too, for abandoning the run, which is the only thing that has come close to working offensively. But maybe Fromm is checking out of run plays? Whatever he’s doing, it’s been disastrously bad. I think that 3rd-down pass att. to Swift, with 30 yds. of open field in front of him, was as bad as I’ve ever seen.

We have regressed through the year. Fromm has regressed mightily from last year. There’s a problem here and although I want to see Fields in the game, he can’t solve it by himself. Let’s look at this. Our Georgia’s first drive, a sure TD was inches off of Mecole’s fingers. Then LSU got 3. On Georgia’s second drive, they ran the ball down LSU’s throat, which had to be disheartening to them…until we gifted them a faked FG instead of tying things up. That lit the fire.
This whole thing started rolling down hill right there…and it didn’t hit bottom until halftime. Unless we get 6 with a two point conversion on the first drive we might as well pack it in.

We’ve also dropped some interceptions. Our “skill” players have had a bad day. Fromm missed some sure TD passes. Punter can’t keep the ball in bounds.
Today, the Georgia Bulldogs didn’t get off the bus. Simple as that.

I would like to take a look at Fromm’s bank account to see if there have been any large deposits lately. Is LSU’s coverage that good? Nobody open?

Is there some rule that 13 can’t get the ball 2 series’ in a row?

The can’t Holyfield. But it’s too late now.

Holyfield veraging 8 yards per carry, yet touches ball only 7 times!!! Swift is getting 7 yards per carry. LSU could not stop the run but Chaney abandoned it early in the game.

This. That series after Mecole’s punt return was icing on the cake for a game that our coaches lost for us. Holyfield running all over them and we didn’t even give him a carry. I could go on and on but seriously what’s the point. We should have at least been in the game at the end but the cute play calling and mental mistakes did us in.

Game over. This was a classic Richt era face plant. Not prepared and our heads were never in the game. We didn’t get beat, we got embarrassed.

All year Kirby has screwed around playing everybody he could get to put on a helmet instead of sharpening his starters and instilling a killer instinct. It showed today.

11/27 for 126. No TDs. 1 INT. Somebody explain to me why we didn’t run more? It’s not as if Fromm had a great 1st Q. He was terrible from the jump. Run game was our chance to stay in it, so of course we threw it 27 times.

Win out … get to Atlanta.

Yep. 2 weeks to get ready for FU. But 2 weeks for FU to get ready for us, too. Plus Kentucky may be the actual best team in the East based upon the play of all teams in the East so far. I hate to say it but after what I saw yesterday it wouldn’t surprise me if we lost both of those games.

I know we’re all disappointed, but is anyone really surprised? I’m not. This isn’t our year to go all the way.

I’m surprised that Fromm turned in such a horrendous performance. Aren’t you? Taking a sack on 3rd and 6, from the LSU 40-something yard line, was the cherry on top.

Hate to be ‘that guy’, but I said earlier this week that ILB Taylor can’t tackle.

And the record setting pace of substitutions has proved to be a liability yet again. Holyfield ran for 25 yards & a TD in 2 plays, so of course we didn’t see him in the following possession.

Someone said it in another thread. The coaches need to decide who is first string and who is second string, etc. Then they need to play them accordingly. If Herschel Walker were on this team would he only be getting 7-8 carries? How is a RB supposed to get in rhythm? Holyfield was running like Herschel at the beginning and they pulled him out of the game!! Morons!

Just a terrible day.. I would give a small fortune to meet LSU in the SECCG like we did Auburn last year. I honestly think that LSU got every break and that if we played them in ATL we’d beat them soundly. We’ll probably never know. We did get out coached in spades.
Let’s all cheer up.. Georgia is much better than they showed today and will be a better team now..this may be the spring board to beating the rest of the schedule as expected.
We’ve still got a chance at a super season and I think we’ll see it.

We are a top 25 team. That’s it. It’s amazing how Mullen can come in with the crappy season they had last year and be better than us already. CKS is a recruiter. He won with a great team last year. He’s got a lot to prove in my opinion Count me not impressed with this coaching staff. But more than anything, Fromm lost this game today. He flat out sucked. And the fact that CKS refused to acknowledge Fromm needed to sit today is the most concerning thing of all.

Every time Holyfield touched the ball, it was like he was Mike Tyson and the LSU defense was his dad’s ear. I don’t, for the life of me, understand the UGA offensive game plan today. Perhaps Holyfield and Swift need to go to Smart like Chubb and Michel?

Offensvie gameplan was sound. Execution (by Fromm especially) was dreadful.

You can’t throw away TD’s early in a game on the road at LSU and assume those opportunities are just gonna appear every series
