This is getting ridiculous.

That’s a 38, followed by six zeros… not to coach.

And to think some of you can’t understand why there are those who believe the players deserve more than they’re getting.

That may be the goldenest of golden parachutes. Take it Gus – take it and run away laughing your ass off.

Gus isn’t going anywhere. That’s a pipe dream. They’ve made that bed, they knew it when they done it, and they’ll sleep in it.

If you took all FCS head coaching salaries combined and distributed it among all the players, each player would receive approximately $26,500.

If you took the $38 million buyout and distributed it among Auburn scholarship football players (assuming they have the maximum of 85) that would be $445,058.82 per player for just this year.

Yes, but I assume the Senator is having a conversation regarding the relationship between coaching salaries and player pay as a policy and not just a one off situation.

If we are gonna talk about player compensation as an across the board policy, we probably should discuss the entirety of college football, and not a one time buyout of a highly paid coach that just signed a long term extension at Auburn University. That would be making the aberration the rule.

I might be wrong, he might be suggesting what you are saying, that Auburn players only be compensated based on this one off. I’m not sure.

Comparing all FCS and thinking they are the same isn’t realistic. Senator doesn’t see them as the same either. The NCAA doesn’t see them as the same. No one does. Compare the coaching salaries in the power 5 with the rest of the FCS. Player pay will not be the same in the power 5 as it is the rest of the FCS nor should it be.

The reason I posted as I did is statistics are not always useful. The sample size matters as well as who/what is included in it. IMO, your sample size and who was included was as wrong as my sample size and who was included in it. For instance, the average american has one tit and one ball.

The senators point was if a school has enough money to pay a coach 38 million not to coach, they have plenty of money to pay their players a LOT more than they are paying them now.

I fully understand your point that the Power 5 are different than the rest of FBS.

Unfortunately, they are all bound by the same set of guidelines and allowing one subset of schools to operate by different standards as others could create competitive advantages and disadvantages, and that’s a whole other conversation. Perhaps we could create FBS Prime, but then you still have issues even inside of conferences.

In any event, the only purpose of the stat is to scope the relative coaching salary to what could be doled out to atheletes.

Frankly, I’ve come around to the Senator’s way of thinking on this issue over time. It’s a dog eat dog world and you ought to grab what you can while you can.

At this point, I don’t really care about keeping things competitive across the board. There are probably at most only 10 to 15 programs that can legitimately say they have had a chance at a title in the last two decades anyway.

I’m not sure why we wouldn’t allow boosters to pay atheletes to come to a school either, so long as it’s paid out in the open and taxed as ordinary income. If a booster wants to give a Justin Fields a million to come to his old school, then I think it’s stupid to tell a kid he can’t have it or tell the booster he can’t give it.

I think most people recognize that a lot of these guys aren’t really concerned with a degree and with rules like one-and-done, it’s pretty clear the schools don’t either. It’s time to get real and just make college football and basketball like the pros. As Senator points out pretty routinely, the front office is getting paid like the pros, the coaches are getting paid like the pros, the only one left out of the equation is the player.

Let’s just get it over with already and dispense with the “student-athlete”, “competitive balance” bullsh*t.

“Competitive disadvantages”??? There’s already a competitive disadvantage for every team not in the power 5. Even within conferences there are built in advantages/disadvantages when it comes to competition. Vandy will never compete with Bama so long as things stay as they are now. Competitive disadvantages won’t get any worse with a pay for play business model. The only change will be that the players get paid instead of all that money just going to schools and coaches.

For the most part, I agree with your last post. Way past time to start paying the players.

More broadly than that, if they have the funds for this, the schools have the resources to provide their student-athletes with free education and medical support for the rest of their lives.

They would have to take a pay cut….

For FCS, that number drops to approximately $4,150 per player.

Shit take Gus’s 7 million and spit it amongst the 85 scholarship athletes and that is a little better than $82,000 per player. They could just call that a year end bonus to supplement what the Barn is already paying them.

Not enough offense at Auburn this year.
    Think so.
Who are their running backs? Name one.
That is what hurt them last year.
You know who is loaded with running backs?
It is a team in the East.
    Gators are loaded.
And that fact will be a huge issue for the Dawgs in JAX with their injuries on defense.
Look for UF to rush for over 300 on the dawgs.

  8. Look, there just isn’t enough money to pay the players.

I keep saying this, but college football is run by greedy whores.

This is not sustainable and will collapse under the weight of its own greed. The only variable is time.

You can’t get your expenses to get this far out of proportion of your stated mission.

Somebody at the barn is gonna plant a bag of cash deal on Gus. Get him out for cause and a reduction of 5 scholarships.

Good friend of mine whose family has donated millions to AU over the years. Says the Tigers are fully prepared to 86 Gus if he doesn’t finish the regular season with a winning record. They’re gonna lean on the big-money boosters to pony up a big chunk of the buyout, but it’s still gonna cost the University some money, and the other athletic programs stand to feel some pain.

Many of us have marveled at how Auburn can zigzag from 3–9 to a national title and right back again in the blink of an eye. I think the erratic-ness of the athletic department has a lot to do with it. If you’re even talking about flipping your coach every three or four years—even if you don’t actually pull the trigger every time—you’re creating the kind of chaotic mindset that never lets anyone, from the coaches on down, find a groove. So the 3–9 troughs never last long, but neither do the highs. The question is, would I take a national title like the one Auburn got in 2010 if it meant being a laughingstock every 3 or 4 years for the foreseeable future? As much fun as it’d be at times, I’m not sure my aging heart could take it.

Since Jay Jacobs is gone, who is this new guy that’s their AD? He came from the northwest and admitted he knew nothing about Auburn customs and such before taking the job. He sounds like the new fall guy, but I can’t figure out how it would work.

Gus looks brilliant with an excellent dual-threat QB (Cam, Nick) but average otherwise. This is true of most programs.

You never say never, but I’d be shocked if even the Plainsmen were stupid enough to pay a coach $38 million to go home and watch on television. Then again, it IS Auburn. But there needs to be a grownup in the room somewhere along the way before that happens. Jeepers.

That said, I try not to daydream, but how amazing would it be if Ole Miss can get them this weekend and then Georgia has a shot at striking one of the death blows to Auburn’s bowl game hopes?

Just up the student fees by $1500 and the “All in” family has this covered. If there’s still a shortfall, call Cam and Farly to pony up.

Auburn has had back to back 10 win seasons ONCE in their history. Lose all your OL, running back, two top receivers with ACLs and a weak secondary and what do you get. Typical Barn history. Follow a 10 win year with at least 4 losses. Plus the fact that Malzahn is the worst coach in the SEC at making adjustments. He has one game plan and if that isn’t working then it’s an L. I hope they keep on renewing him just like Ga Tech does with Paul Johnson. Almost guaranteed success for their opponents.
