Kirby’s made several mistakes. In hindsight, recruiting Fields was his biggest one. I truly wish the guy had jever set foot on campus. Dude got standing ovations every time he hit the field. DawgNation absolutely loved him.

I don’t agree it was a mistake to recruit him at all. Bringing in talent that may be able to help the team on the field immediately, or in the future, is a primary responsibility of KS and staff. Doesn’t mean the player will always develop the way he is projected, or that he will fit the situation as you had hoped. We probably feel the way he was used seemed strange, but he was given a lot of 1st team reps in practice, and had chances in live action…similar to how Tua was handled his freshman year.
The miss seems to be 1) Team Fields overestimated his ability to replace an established player and, 2) he wasn’t as far along in his development as many expected due to media buildup. Certainly would have been a better situation had he been a year later in his class timing, but that was beyond the control of all involved. Fields would have spent most of the time on the sideline even if he had arrived on campus this January. And if Fromm stays for his Senior year, and remained healthy for his Jr and Sr years, chances are pretty good Fields still would have a backup for his first two seasons. Just didn’t work out.
Kirby has to continue to bring top athletes in every recruiting cycle to put the best talent available on the field, and in roles behind the starters to provide needed depth. I think he has shown he will, Fields will not be the only talented athlete to get frustrated on the UGA sideline, he just got more attention than others. I didn’t realize until the end that he actually felt he was going to win the starting job his freshman year; bad assessment on his part.

I agree Mac. Not a mistake at all. If Fromm had gone down early in the season like Eason, I’m sure Fields would have done okay after they tweaked the offense for him. But yeah, it became apparent that Fields wasn’t going to just beat out Fromm head to head. Fields had plenty of chances, though maybe he wasn’t used in the best manner. Still, I don’t think it would have made a difference.
I’ve also seen complaints about the Fields transfer becoming public just before the early signing period. I’m pretty sure the coaches knew it was a strong possibility of him leaving anyway, but knowing before signing day is MUCH better than learning after signing day when any potential QB recruits are gone. Though with the way the transfer portal seems to be working, maybe we could have just claimed a player off of waivers.

“Constantly harassed?” Refresh’s my memory someone: not to downplay the actual incodent, but I thought it was one single incident where a baseball player was yelling slurs at the TV or something and Fields saw the video on social media.

Word has it that the Fields family and their lawyer/s will be using statements found on various websites, as well as social media, in addition to the Sasser incident. The Fields family will also claim that Justin was prepared to play baseball for the Dawgs until the racial slur from one member of the baseball team. The claims will be that Fields did not feel comfortable with the baseball program, yet felt 100% at home with the football team, hence the desire to transfer.

Georgia just needs to send an email telling the NCAA that we’re not interested in making Fields sit out a year and be done with this garbage. I wonder how Reverend Sharpton squares the circle that the Fields family is so concerned about the harmful racial environment at UGA that they allowed his sister to enroll as a softball player and to stay enrolled? After all, she sits in the stands on a football gameday and not on the sidelines and she might have actually HEARD our moron baseball player (who was kicked off of the baseball team in less than a week for his actions). Justin Fields was not worshipped as a God in Athens. But he enjoyed the next-lowest level of reverence to that while he was a Bulldog, and the fact that his family is willing to light and drop this match and then walk out of the room and trash the university’s reputation just to make sure he gets to play somewhere else is pretty low in my opinion.

This is what I read:

Unlike, say, you, I don’t claim to know every single thing that happened outside my presence, including but not limited to what people I have never seen or spoken to think.
If you blindly assume some crap you read on Facebook is what actually happened, that says a lot about you. There is another version of what actually happened in the stands that day, that while not acceptable, is a different context for the stupidity of the Sasser kid. But I’m sure your omnicscience would dismiss it, and since I don’t know if it’s what happened, I wont put it out here like it was gospel (sorry, hope the religious reference didn’t trigger you). What I strongly suspect is that if Justin Fields had won the starting job at some point last season, none of this would matter to anyone, least of all him. But I don’t know that, either.
That you would defend, to the point of arrogantly deriding anyone else’s decision to to comment on it, a proven liar and all around race baiting buffoon like Al Sharpton, says more about you than it does about the people who criticize him. You may not realize it, but agreeing that the Sasser kid had no justification for whatever it was that he said and recognizing that Al Sharpton is a preposterous buffoon, supported only by the most ignorant people on earth, are not binary options.

We both agree there is no acceptable context for Sasser word choice.

They are ALREADY making a big deal out of it (hence ole AL sticking his nose in). You can either vigorously defend yourself or just bend over and hope they have some KY handy. What more could UGA have done, publicly execute Sasser? Anyone who thinks this is unique to UGA is a fool. People have been disliking one another for being the wrong color, religion, gender, size, nationality, political belief (you seem to be well acquainted with this one) etc, etc since the dawn of time. To think that is going to magically disappear is to be Pollyanna. Tarring and feathering UGA to get your way is not going to change on damn thing at your next stop. Some people will like you and some will hate you and there is not a damn thing you can do about it other than just be yourself. If you are so fragile that what a handful of people have said, posted, written breaks you, then you are in for a long difficult life.

I’m just saying that some people are sitting around knowing, on prior occasions, that they either encouraged Sasser OR knowing they heard him or his friends act likewise in other settings and kept their own counsel.
This is the result. That is the beginning and end to what I am saying.
We can either allow permissiveness to put us right here again on some later date, or we can check this shit each and every time we come across it.
In short, if you don’t want Sharpton scolding you or people or institutions you care about, do your part. It would do a lot more good than bitching about Al in the aftermath. It’s nothing but oxygen for his fire. I’m offering a bucket of water. Take it or not.

I can control me and maybe to some degree my minor children. I can condemn what someone else says but I can’t stop them. Should the people around Sasser have beaten the crap out of him. That would be assault and battery. UGA booted Sasser, but they can’t control what he says. There is still that little thing called the 1st amendment that allows us to say stupid things that others disagree with. I have friends and family that say stupid things from time to time that I don’t agree with and we get into arguments about it. They will still be my friends (except in rare cases) and family, and they will still say what they think. If I (to use modern terminology) unfriended everyone in the physical or online world that I ever disagreed with, I would be sitting all by my lonesome all day, everyday.
As for Al, who gives a shit what he thinks. He has proven that he sees racism in anything and everything that will make ole Al a $$$$. The only color that he truly sees is GREEN.

Who decides what is “fighting words”? Legally there is no such thing. When you (as you have been known to do) calls someone who supports Trump one of your choice phrases, that could be consider fighting words and NOT “political speech”. You are personally attacking THEM not their politics. How aggressively do you confront that person? If I say something that you disagree with are you going to punch me? If you do and I file assault charges what is your LEGAL defense? I didn’t like what he said? That is why UGA could expel him but they could not publicly flog him for what he said. In addition when you “aggressively” confront someone, it is a good idea to plan to have your ass beat to a pulp. You may no but best to play ahead unless you are a really big guy (and sober).
