A former University of Missouri, Columbia, tutor violated NCAA ethical conduct, academic misconduct and academic extra benefits rules when she completed academic work for 12 student-athletes, according to a Division I Committee on Infractions panel.
Oops. Penalties include a 2019-20 postseason ban for the football program and a 5 percent reduction in the amount of scholarships in the football program during the 2019-20 academic year.

UPDATE: In case you’re wondering, the postseason ban includes the SECCG, which means Mizzou ain’t dark horsing anybody.

It just seems ridiculous that people are still doing stuff like this. Unfortunately, what it tells me is that the practice is probably pervasive and most folks don’t get caught.

Exactly. I guess the only difference is the ‘students’ may have done their own work. I think it has been pervasive. I know a UGA grad that says she did most of HW’s papers back in the day. Tutors are okay, I think, and there may be a fine line between tutoring and doing the work. 😉

Ha! I was a graduate TA when he was there and had him as a student in class — my big UGA brush with fame. I recall he was a polite and good student. Perhaps stats class was more his thing than writing papers…

The NCAA actually cited the UNC case in the ruling and basically stated that the difference was UNC lawyered up and Mizzou admitted to academic fraud. How have schools not learned that you never ever cooperate with the NCAA?

Not exactly. The NCAA said that UNC stood by the courses and the coursework. They said that the Carolina players attended classes and did the work, but it was graded by this shady secretary in the department. In the Mizzou case, the tutor did the work for the players, so the academic fraud was even worse in the eyes of the NCAA.

Plus the UNC courses were available to all students regardless of athletic scholarship or not.

That being said, UNC had to fight it (lawyers fees and all) v.s. being taken to the ncaa woodshed….v.s. the harrick stink, UGA chose the path of least resistance (as usual)

I was thinking the same thing. I hope he is interested in us. He is eligible via the NCAA to transfer without penalty due to postseason sanctions. I am not sure if he is a grad transfer so I am not sure how that would work out transferring in the SEC. I think I remember something about SEC passing a rule for no issues with intra-conference transfers when their school is under NCAA sanctions. I believe that is how Van-Jefferson ended up going from OM to UF.

My questions are these: Had this tutor also done the work for non-athletes too, would Mizzou been held without penalty like UNC? If so, is this a loophole for other universities not concerned about academic fraud?

No. Players getting credit for work they didn’t do isn’t an illegal benefit (things athletes receive that students don’t). It’s a NCAA no-no in all caps and bold face fonts.

Since Bryant is a one and done QB grad transfer, he may want to just stay at Mizzou. My guess is that he was less interested in winning a NC or he wouldn’t have transferred to Mizzou in the first place. He probably wants more snaps/starts on his resume and to prove to the NFL scouts that he’s worth a high round draft pick. Unless the returning upper classmen leave in droves, the same offensive skill players will be there when he committed and he’ll be long gone before any decent recruits arrive on campus. Just a thought…

I agree, it was more about getting reps and exposure in an offense that fit his skill set at a place where he could likely win the starting role. If he had wanted revenge on Clemson it would have been tough to hit the right target.

Seems they got that special SEC treatment,too bad their basketball team isn’t better. How extremely stupid does a school have to be to cooperate in their own hanging. The NCAA is like the IRS, if they are going to hang you at least let them build the scaffold and spring the trap. Hell these idiot schools throw themselves on the NCAA’s mercy and get screwed every time.

I’ve given up trying to superimpose logic on anything the ncaa does. If you don’t fight (UGA, mizzou) you get trashed. If you do fight (USC) (the real one, not the cocks), you get the semi-death penalty…unless you’re unc or t-osu in which case you get a slap on the wrist.
