“It’s the best way to handle it.”

Eight simple words to make every Georgia fan preemptively cringeGreg McGarity sat down last week to discuss…

He doesn’t disappoint, either.  Here are three quotes for your viewing pleasure.

  • Kirby is driving the Get Out of Jacksonville Train.
Do those remarks mean Smart wants to stop playing in Jacksonville?“I think so. I think that’s pretty much where Kirby stands,” McGarity said. “He is just a recruiting guru. Anytime something is done to take away from that effort I think he feels like it affects our program, but there’s so many other things going in that game, with that weekend, you’ve got to look at every aspect of it… there are a lot of things to consider. But we’ll all get together and at the end of the day whatever decision we make, it’ll be our decision.”
  • Butts-Mehre isn’t showing enough love to Magill Society members.  “Right now in the Magill Club — I think we’ll call it the Magill Lounge — there are only 200 donors in there. We’ve got over a thousand donors in the Magill Society. So it’s only a fraction of individuals, but it’s sort of a good problem to have. We have a lot of interest. A lot of people have really given large donations. We really can’t move their seat locations until somebody gives up their seat location, so what do we have as an alternative to that? This is an alternative among that group to offer this opportunity.”
  • Non-Magill Society members aren’t showing enough love to Butts-Mehre.  “Right now we’re at $75 for our premium games and $55 for others, but our season tickets have not increased this year, and hopefully we don’t have to increase in the future. That’s always probably the most controversial thing you can do is raise ticket prices. But we’ve not had to do that because we’ve been very successful fundraising.”

There’s plenty of pap interspersed throughout (“Nobody likes a warm beer”), but the gist here, to what should be nobody’s surprise, is the relentless focus on cash flow.  Some portion of the nouveau riche is disappointed that throwing the big bucks in the pot haven’t gotten them everything they want — those sweet secondary prices for Notre Dame tix were fine, Greg, but some primo 50-yard line North stands seats would be finer, thank you very much– and that’s left the athletic department scrambling to come up with a bone or two to throw in the meantime.

The tradeoff is there for all to see.  The Magill folks get moved to the front of the line and the rest of us will be told to be grateful that their contributions are all that stand between us and a ticket price bump.  (That’ll come, anyway, after he gets them in their new seats.)

That part is unsurprising, but the attempt to throw Smart under the bus regarding the aftermath of a departure from Jacksonville is less so.

I assume McGarity believes the fan base has bought into the Smart recruiting narrative so completely that he’ll be able to shield himself after another money-driven decision from the criticism of a major chunk of Georgia’s fan base.  With regard to that, the best thing those of us who would prefer the Cocktail Party stay where it is have going is that Jacksonville appears to be as enamored with Georgia football as we are.

Such is what passes for genius and The Georgia Way.

At some point Kirby is going to have to do more than just being in the hunt to keep getting his way. McGarity is year-to-year because he’s waiting on Kirby to deliver the big prize before he has to make some really big decisions like J’ville. Ticket prices and cash strategy will ultimately be determined by if and when Kirby brings home a national championship, not by McGarity’s vision.

  2. I’ve become resigned to the fact the Cocktail Party is leaving Jacksonville because Kirby wants another recruiting weekend every other year. I don’t understand why he wants to push every bit of his political capital and goodwill into the middle of the table for this.

It’s either that, or Kirby and the AD are playing bad cop and good cop with the city to get the best deal.

Despite the opinion of some on this forum, I contend that leaving J’ville would not be a fan friendly move. 42,000 tickets every year compared to home and home would also lead to a lot of complaints, many from those who think getting 6,000 tickets in Gainesville is somehow a good idea.

The WLOCP is part of what makes Georgia special. One of the biggest games of the year every year. It would be a mistake to let it go.

I think part of the posturing from Kirby Is that he wants to be in more marquee neutral site games on the season opening weekend. If he can get home team recruits every other year in Jax, then he doesn’t have to lose 2 recruiting weekends in a season.

Agree, leave the game in Jax…I too think it’s posturing on our part to get more $$$ out of Jax. Or open up recruiting every year for the home team. That seems like a win/win to me.

Yeah, a beloved 85 year old tradition seems a strange place to fight for one weekend every other year that can be accomplished on other weekends. I’m probably 50-50 caring if it moves and I am a proponent of on campus games generally, but I think you need a much bigger reason than one recruiting weekend to change that fixture in college football.

I like Kirby but I’m with Bright Idea above in that he is going to have to actually deliver that championship before he gets to actually call some of the important shots. This has the feel of a good cop/bad cop routine more than anything else. One recruiting weekend every other year can’t be a hill Kirby is willing to die on. Georgia/Florida in Jacksonville is a great tradition and the fans love it. Kirby is recruiting consistently in the top three in the country. If they asked me, I don’t think destroying a great tradition in order to possibly move up one or two spots in recruiting rankings (if it really made any difference at all) every other year is a good value proposition.

I feel like the law of diminishing returns is about to kick in here. Given the astronomical level at which Kirby’s already recruiting, how much appreciable difference is one weekend in Jacksonville going to make?

How about home & home and then two years in J’ville? Repeat as needed or stop as needed.

      • Cojones, why change what is the best of the neutral site traditional rivalries? I don’t want Gator fans in Athens. I don’t imagine Georgia fans would be clamoring to spend a weekend in Hogtown. Keep the game in Jacksonville as long as the economics work in both schools’ favor.

This cannot be echoed enough. I don’t want an onslaught of Gators infesting Athens every other season. That alone is reason enough to keep it in Jax.

I love Kirby Smart. However, he’s pissing on my leg and telling me that it’s raining if he wants to try to convince me that Jacksonville is the stumbling block between Georgia and being able to recruit. Losing a recruiting weekend every other year has CLEARLY not impacted his efforts to recruit talented athletes to the University of Georgia. I’m more inclined to listen to an argument about competitive advantages and disadvantages for the actual game itself… but he’s proven that when you take the better team to Jacksonville and you coach that better team in a way that leads them not to play scared, you win the game. Georgia-Florida is a special tradition. We’re recruiting just fine.

McGarrity should never be allowed to speak to the press unless its a prepared statement prepared by Kirby. There is no upside for UGA for him to open his pie hole on ant topic except his favorite flavor of ice cream.

Is keeping the game in Jacksonville but allowing both schools to host recruits on their “home” years not an option? Seems like a really simple fix to the problem to me

    • Tell that to the season ticket holders or the students who lose their tickets to a recruit’s family who wants to go to Jacksonville. Also, who’s going to host them while they are at the game … more tickets to the recruiting hosts (and you probably have to pay for their trips to Jacksonville)?

It’s not as easy of a solution as you think. I would think in this case current students get the shaft by tickets being removed from their allotment.

Paying for the hosts travel and lodging is peanuts. It’s all about finding tickets to a sold out stadium. Maybe they make a field level section for the families or they bounce some season ticket holders. It’s going to happen.

Right G_Money. If it ain’t 12 ozs min, it ain’t a cup of beer. Besides, I couldn’t see how having two large swallows of beer would be worth the effort to carry it around the stadium, but 12 – 16 ozs is different.

I guess not many people have had the good life of a cold beer at a baseball game. Mine have always been cold to the last drop. Never seen a hawker walk far without selling out and returning within 10 mins with more for the area. When a cold keg has the spigot open and cups to catch them and place (not stack: how in hell do you “stack” beer?) them in rows of 6×4, the beer is always cold. The energy to make a keg cold is never lost because the aluminum remains cold as well as the beer.

Some of you are speaking ignorantly on the subject or you are following the latest alternate news fare about beer. GEDOUTAHEAH.

I’m normally one of the first to jump at an opportunity to mock ADGM’s “leadership” but I’m going to protest in his defense this time….to wit:

1-This is absolutely good cop-bad cop rhetoric designed to squeeze as much cash as possible out of Jax imo, and GM’s playing his part. And scoff at the recruiting angle if you will, but imagine being a kid there at the game. (Once Kirby gets his alternating turn to host in Jax-which I believe is REALLY what he wants) What a closing sell, and carrot to entice the biggest recruits each year! This game is not leaving Jax as long as the current cash grab mentality is running the show.

2-If you believe in Kirby and have bought in to the Magill Society initiative, what perks can they offer you? You’re not getting my seats! I’m not giving them up! So the perks they can create will likely continue to follow those nouveau riche that are helping foot the bill of Kirby’s blueprint (that ADGM has been given the task of implementing) Considering many reviews have been split close to 50/50 in whether fans really want beer & wine sold in Sanford, this seems like a harmless perk. Still, it’s hard to believe folks shelling out that kind of donation are standing outside where they can’t even watch the game. Even if it were available to the rest of us, I certainly wouldn’t bother to go wait in exchange for missing near 1/2 a quarter. Would you?

3-Uga remains competitive with their season ticket prices, and thanks to Kirby’s direction the home slate appears to be improving even more over the next decade. Is what ADGM cites incorrect? It feels a bit like piling on here to me…then again, maybe I’m being too forgiving.

The board and McGarity are doing their best under “The Georgia Way” to implement the plan Kirby has laid before them, and will as long as he keeps winning. I found most of ADGMs answers genuine, even if I didn’t agree with it. Hard to expect much more than that, given the current environment he’s being asked to operate in.

Kirby is said “to keep the main thing the main thing”, which is winning football games. McGarity’s main thing is keeping the finances in order so Georgia can do what Georgia needs to do to remain competitive. Not unlike a corporate CFO. McGarity’s main thing is not to make every ticket holder that walks into Sanford Stadium deliriously happy. If that’s what you are looking for – that’s a “you” problem.

Insulting for an empty suit like McDoofus to characterize Kirby’s thinking about JAX to be as simplistic as making decisions as a “recruiting guru” We had all better hope there is more to his offering up a crown jewel of CFB tradition for something a small as one recruiting weekend every other year. (Because we are struggling soooo much at recruiting in KS’ 3 years, amirite?) Kirby should slap him in public for his 794th PR faux pas of his way too long career as an AD in Athens. If it wasn’t a mistake, color me very worried about who was behind some of our game issues, particularly in the 2nd halves of a couple of key games. Pretty sure my initial thought of another gaffe by our dummy AD is the right take on this. Damn man!

As a younger alumnus (2004) I have no love for Jacksonville. I understand the romantic view. The tradition and uniqueness. But let’s be real. Neutral it is not, recruiting negative it is for us, a strategic advantage for Florida being closer and their fans do not travel like we do, and it is becoming harder and harder for non paying alumni to get tickets to the cocktail party.

Would LOVE to see this go to home and home. Make them travel. Give us better home games.

Nobody really knows about the effect of staying in Jacksonville has on recruiting. What we DO know however is that playing only 3 out of 8 SEC games at home every other year is a disadvantage. Now the Georgia Bulldogs may be so good that the Dawgs can overcome that disadvantage but why put the team at a disadvantage at all?

            Like

            • Why play those high profile home-and-homes, then? Or any neutral site games?

The logical conclusion of your argument is that Georgia should load up on all the home cupcake games it can schedule.

BTW, the flip side of this is that the Dawgs avoid playing in the Swamp. I’d call that an advantage.

              Like

40,000 Georgia fans in the stands would argue it’s pretty neutral. The nearly 10 game advantage (even after Florida invented football in 1991) in the 85 year history would also argue it’s more than neutral for us.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the ~15 years (out of nearly 100) that Florida football was relevant defines the total of Georgia-Florida football.

  15. As for your “Non-Magill Society members aren’t showing enough love to Butts-Mehre” observation, I had a deposition last week in which there were 5 UGA alums, all of who are big fans, and I am the only one who actually go to the games. The reasons were the usual; they have all gotten accustomed to watching in the comfort of home and UGA does nothing to make contributing and buying season tickets worth while, etc.

When the generations that buys tickets gets to old to go or start to die away, those guys are not taking our place. Butts-Mehre will have to find ways to squeeze more and more out of the Don Leeburns and Fran Tarkentons.
