Shade, sooey!

Man, Sam Pittman came out with a hot take at his presser yesterday.

Sounds like somebody’s not fully committed to will imposition.

Based on results, he isn’t wrong, is he?

I don’t think he’s making a statement about the offensive philosophy of UGA. I suspect he’s more than likely making a point against the idea that a line coach would have a more nuanced offensive philosophy than pound them with the line.

That said, he was the architect of the previous jumbo OL at sasnakrA, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it again.

Eventually, they all bite the hand that fed them for a period of time… Correct me if I’m wrong but was our line impenetrable this year? Was it the source of strength it was touted to be at the beginning of the year?

Can’t see that ending well there or at USCe for the Bobo-Boom show…

Yes, the line was really good. Especially considering the injuries that caused much shuffling to be done.

The problem with the line play is that 5 guys can’t block 6 or 7. That’s a play calling and philosophy issue, not a coach-em-up issue.

If Kirby would not have interfered in every aspect of the team maybe things might be different and Pittman stays, but I can’t blame him for going and getting a better payday. I really wonder about the back story of Bobo to USC: did Kirby even make an effort to get him? Does anyone know any details?

      Oy, we’re still doing this?

Pittman’s in his late fifties. If he wanted a shot at being an SEC head coach — and it’s clear from his presser that he wanted that — this is the only shot he’s likely to get. Plus, he’s doubling his salary. So tell me how things would be different…

I watched most of the presser. It should be noted that Pittman reached out to the AD expressing his interest in the job. The AD didn’t “woo” him.

It amuses me to no end that people believe that Saban, Belichick, and the ghost of Bear Bryant would happily be assistants in Athens because … hedges? Unsuccessful programs poach coaches from successful programs. That’s just a fact of life. Bud Foster is the exception, not the rule.

Replacing Pittman is no different than replacing Chubb and Swift. It will be inconvenient. But it’s Kirby’s job. The most successful coaches manage the attrition in their staffs just as well as they manage the attrition in their rosters.

When you are the head coach, by nature you can’t “interfere in every part of the game” because it is all your domain.

CKS’s job IS to be involved in every part of the game.

I have issues with the offensive philosophy at times as well, but it’s Kirby’s team to do with as he pleases.

  5. The Pitt Boss made it clear that Athens was his last stop as an assistant. He and his wife seemed to love Athens and were probably going to retire there.

A head coaching opportunity was the only job he was leaving Georgia for.

Good luck to him, but I don’t think he’s going to be successful there. It’s a terrible job with a fan base that thinks it’s still the 70s when Texas was their rival.

By the way, I think his statement was more about his last stint there as Bret B ran the program into the ground.

If any one can’t see it was a shot at Kirby and Coley, then I don’t know , the man Practically ran to Arkansas begging for the job to get a way from Kirby and Coley He knows that Kirby doesn’t have any knowledge of how to operate an offense, he may know hoe to stop one but not how to run one. Coley and his offensive coaches should be terminated immediately, the players were making the same mistakes the last game as they were the first. An old saying If the student that has the ability to learn but doesn’t then the teacher hasn’t taught,, I feel the same about coaching 4 and 5 star players not improving has to be a coaching problem or coaching interference by the head coach. Don’t see any improvement until Kirby checks his ego. So this Old Dawg is through until the program changes. Now have more time to work on my Golf Game. Good luck GO DAWGS

I can’t blame Pittman for wanting to be a HC. Thanks for 4 good years of OL recruits. He more than triples his salary, seems like a no brainer. I’d live in a worse place than Arkansas for that kind of money, assuming there is one.

I think Pittman has got a better shot at rebuilding Arkansas than a more fashionable pick might.

You can’t compete in the SEC at even a bowl eligible level if you can’t hold your own in the LOS.

I wonder if EO’s ascendancy has made ADs take a closer look at line coaches versus coordinators.

I thought Luke had them moving in the right direction given the circumstances. But it’s a fool that looks for fairness in college football these days.

        Hey, can Luke recruit?

Agreed on Luke never take a job especially a SEC job under probation or likely probation, the fan base won’t give the coach time to build back… Unless… you’re just in it for the buyout.

The dog leg incident in the Egg Bowl certainly didn’t help his chances.

Luke has recruited well no idea if he can within the rules and he was part of the program for 2 wins over Bama I believe.

I don’t think that’s a shot at Georgia or Kirby at all. I think certain twitter types want it to be, but the point was made yesterday when it surfaced that it is a critique of what Arkansas was trying to do last year.

That makes a lot more sense and is infinitely more believable, albeit less fun for the twitteratti.

You may be right given the prior two years’ success with the running game at UGA, but it definitely will be targeted as being at UGA unless it is clarified. We will be a targeted team on the recruiting trail in several ways. we were already fading some in recruiting, although being 5th ranked currently appears to show everything is hokey-dory. Not a lot of recent, favorable activity and many recruits we felt good about have gone the other way, or cooled off in their public comments. We will see, Kirby has been a miracle man thus far in this area of his responsibilities but it just doesn’t feel it is the same. Don’t count him out, but there are more challenges this time around, including with the faithful.

Kirby (UGA) is under serious attack on several different fronts, will be very interesting to see his response with staff changes the next few weeks, and philosophically in the spring/fall. Status quo isn’t going to fly, imo.

Kirby is like Saban in that recruiting feedback is their #1 change motivator. If Kirby is losing recruiting battles, he will adjust and at lightning speed.

The trick is to avoid overreacting.

Signed 6 last year in Georgia, got only 4 committed so far from the state. Love that he is aggressive, but I hope not getting some of these kids from Georgia doesn’t end up biting him in the ass….if not already.

agree, didn’t take it that way either…..context, context, gotta read/hear the entire presser.

Don’t think he is going to light up a room, but he will win over recruits, especially on the OL. I think he is probably just what they need right now.

  11. I figured his leaving was made easier by the play calling. Of course, people are still gonna throw shade at Pittman and the OL like blocking cover zero and stacked boxes all year wasn’t gonna have it’s problems.

He has been a very high performing coach and recruiting and has been very consistent. That seems like a solid place to start for building a staff.

The full quote makes it seem like less of a shot at Georgia.

“Well, you know if you look at the RPO game with the abilities for your quarterback to run and or throw,” Pittman said. “You know nowadays if you get big, big if you are going 12-plus, if you are going 12-22, 21-plus in this league you better have the real deal because they’re gonna have guys at 320, 330 pounds on the other side. I’m not telling you that the philosophy has gone to spread because that’s a lie, but I think you do have to have the edge covered.

“But I don’t think you can just turn around down and down and hand the ball off to the tailback and say let’s go sic’em. You might be able to do it in the third and fourth quarter, but so what we want is to be versatile. I love the RPO game, I like the quarterback read game. I like the 11 which is one tight end and three wide outs. I like to throw the flash screens and different things that is into the RPO system.”

If he is going RPO-based, he will need linemen who can move better laterally, which indicates he wants to go smaller.

That’s a departure from what we’ve seen from him in the past ten years. Maybe you CAN teach an old dawg new tricks.

Pittman can recruit OLs like nobody I’ve seen other than Saban. He’s okay as a coach, but if he had real insights into running an offense, I think he would’ve had a shot at OC ‘somewhere’ by now, considering the decades he’s been in cfb. Another unusual HC pick by Arky.

Kirby has some huge decisions to make re offensive coaches. Pittman leaving makes that job considerably tougher. On top of that Kirby has signing day staring him in the face. These next few weeks are going to be huge for our program.

It sounds like Matt Luke will replace Pittman. Sounds good to me! Maybe he can bring an offense with him.

I’d love to see Cade Mays pancake some poor DL next year and then go for the lift your leg dog pee celebration.

The offensive line was designed by Mr. Detail, Kirby Smart. Pittman was just great at giving the HC what he wanted. This does not mean Pittman agreed with it. It was the same at Arky, Bieama (sp) wanted Wisconsin South and Pittman gave it to him. The fact that Kirby made it known that we would play “Manball” meant that the Oline would face 8 man boxes and in the case of the LSU games 11 guys within 7 yards of the LOS. I don’t care if you are the NE Patriots you can’t run dive plays into that kind of defense. Another thing that has screwed up the Offense, that I think is Kirby’s fault ,was constant substitution on offense. Granted some of our receivers can’t catch a cold and injuries hurt us but reps between the starting QB and the best WRs is all important. When guys come in that have been playing catch with Stetson all week, there is zero chemistry. Kirby is in his best recruiting mode when he can show the HS kids that they can play at UGA as freshmen Pickens is an exceptional WR and if Kirby can keep him from getting thrown out of games he will be great. The rest of the freshman WR’s were mediocure at best. Kirby as a “Manball” coach cares more about blocking than catching and route running. He has only said for the record that no WR would play unless they could block. He has never said that no WR would play unless he can run great routes. I have only known a very few DC’s that made good HC’s and most of them had an epiphany and got great OC’s and stayed the heck out of their way. The end pass the Tylenol.

Just turn around and hand the ball to the TB and say, “Sic’um” That seemed to work when we had Nick and Sony and a freshman named Swift. Maybe it was the OL or maybe it was the RB’s, I don’t know, but it seemed to work. We had to get 7 or 8 out of the box and I think we stared trying to do that with the first series of the LSU game. It would have been interesting if the first pass would have been caught and the next two passes had been on target. With 10 dropped passes, it would have also been interesting if our receivers had caught four/fifth of them instead of dropping all of them. LSU feared nothing so they just loaded the box and stopped our running game and the game was over.
