Getting to know you

For what it’s worth, Bruce Feldman is reporting ($$) that there are two graduate transfer quarterbacks on Georgia’s radar, Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman and Boston College’s Anthony Brown.  As he puts it, Newman is considering Georgia, along with several other schools, while Brown is being “recruited” by Georgia.

Both of those guys are dual threat. That plus Fields makes me think Kirby has been wanting to move to a different offense. Hmmmmm

When Kirby got Fields he said he wanted to go more that way (he’d recently had his ass handed to him by Deshaun Watson), but it never played out that way for some reason. We never really let Fields get in rhythm, plus it hurt Fromm’s rhythm. I think if you’re going to go dual threat, you have to go all in with that QB and let him run RPO on occasion as a real threat.

Interesting on Newman. I read last week that he was already at Oregon. Maybe Kirby told him how cold/rainy it is up there.

        Here are Kirby’s recruiting moves:
Eason- We needed him because we didn’t a QB.
Fromm- He new Fromm was a Georgia boy and that UGA needed QBs.
Both of these recruits were must haves to be a functional offense.

Since then he has gone after Fields, Plumlee, and Mathis, and all those guys are dual threat. Even Carson Beck is a good runner.

Add in these two guys, and it’s starting to look like Smart isn’t married to Man Ball. or maybe I need another cup of coffee.

Correct. As, at the same time, really didn’t work try to get in state pro-style studs like Johnson, Harrison and Mills.

He is all over Caleb Williams for 2021 also, although Vandagriff would be hard to pass up.

          Like

          • Mills & Fromm were in the same class. Whoever committed first was going to get the slot. Kirby likely had a closer relationship with Fromm from his recruitment to Bama. Also, Fromm was a candidate for early entry. Therefore, Kirby focused on Fromm, and Mills went to Stanford.

While I won’t compare overall ability, Vandagriff might be comparable to Trevor in his mobility. Not his forte, but can pull it down and gain some yardage. Can actually keep it on an RPO

He shouldn’t wait on Williams if he can get Vandagriff. He is every bit the player that the Clempson qb is.

Kirby is too stubborn to abandon Man Ball, even if that means losing. Don’t you read this blog?

You could offer evidence to the contrary, but since there is none, snark will suffice, eh?

Can you provide proof to the contrary? I think Kirby designs a game plan he thinks will provide the best chance for winning. Has nothing to do with stubbornness, regardless of what you read here.

Proof not being the same as evidence, 4 years of games we’ve all seen = pretty strong evidence of philosophy. Your claim re: the game plan, without one single example to support it, is opinion; doesn’t even rise to the level of evidence.

So, maybe he will change, but we haven’t seen any evidence of that over the last 4 years, though I guess “has nothing to do with stubbornness, regardless of what you read here” should be entered as exhibit A.

“if you have two quarterbacks you don’t have one”

Kirby focked up that entire situation, not confident he would handle it any different if given the chance again.

One of the dumbest statements he has ever uttered publicly. Even if true, you have to be quicker than that. Isn’t like he never “bent the truth” in a press conference (cough, Auburn 2019 2nd half defense, cough.)

    Admittedly knee-jerk reaction here..but really?
These two QB’s lead their teams to a total of 10 points totaled (WF 3…BC 7) against the only SEC equivalent defense they saw all year…Clemson’s.
I’d rather take my chances with a QB from down on the Georgia farm.
If Kirby is just recruiting a back up..then that’s a little different.
Yes, CKS is a hell of a lot better at evaluating talent than I am, but there’s still something about taking a QB out of the ACC that is discouraging to me.
Maybe somebody can make a case that will change my mind.

I’m assuming these guys don’t come to UGA if Fromm returns, so who is the “QB from down on the Georgia farm”?

      Like

      • Uglydawg.

I think that’s right. If Fromm returns we have three backups competing for number two.
The ones that are already on the roster. (“Georgia Farm”..yeah…Mathis came from Ohio State but he never played there…he was a four star transfer)
        Mathis, Bennett and Beck.
If Newman or Brown comes to Georgia and openly competes and wins the job, fine. But I don’t think he should come to Georgia with the job already his to lose. He should have to beat out Bennett, Mathis and Beck and by a good bit because he’ll be a one and done QB.
And I have doubts that either one of them would beat out all three.
I’m skeptical of the move but if Kirby makes it, I’ll come around. I’d rather look for a transfer out of a more competitive conference than the ACC though.
I admitted up front that this is a knee-jerk reaction.
I’ll settle down into the “Kirby’s on the mother” mindset by the end of the Spring game.

      Fromm 2019 – 234/385 for 2860 yards (60.8%) 24 TD 5 INT
      38/-12 rushing yards 0 TDs
      Newman 2019 – 220/361 for 2868 yards (60.9%) 26 TD 11 INT
      180/584 rushing yards 6 TDs

I’m guessing Fromm had a much better cast around him than Newman, but he also played much tougher competition. This isn’t a knock on Fromm at all, but Newman is no “backup ACC QB”. He was basically Wake’s offense.

Well then he kicks field goals too because Wake’s offense managed a total of three points against Clemson .
Your point is valid (that Fromm had a better supporting cast) but that Fromm also played tougher competition is a huge understatement

So Wake or BC would’ve gone 36-7 the last 3 seasons if Jake went there?

          Like

          • Uglydawg

No. But Jake, after starting three years in the SEC DOES have the option of going pro and maybe getting picked in an early round.
Look, IDK if this is a good idea or not. It’s just dismaying to see Kirby have to resort to a grad transfer from Wake or BC. It tells me something I’m not ready to hear. I could be wrong. One of them could be the next Joe Burrow.
(but I kind of f’ing doubt it).

I admit I have never heard of either qb, although I’d be surprised if his receivers at Wake weren’t at least a comparable product, and I also know without looking that the defenses he faced were sub par.

In any event both of these guys would likely be a big step down from D’Eriq King. I just really hope Fromm gives us another year.

And what happens at QB in 2021 for any school looking for a one season plug and play guy? Same thing all over again? I guess with the high expectations nobody wants to bite the bullet with a young QB for even one season.

That’s the million $ question. 3 of the 4 play off QBs are transfers, so maybe kids start going to the best developmental school, graduate in 3 years, and then transfer to their best option.

Sounds like these two guys are making an informed business decsion instead of following the hype and “love”.

You keep making this point, and I think it’s stupid. Wake Forest is DEAD LAST in the ACC in the team talent composite. Two 4-stars on the entire roster. So, no, it’s not surprising that Clemson destroyed them at Death Valley.

Strange that you would deride Newman, who led that crappy team to a bowl while thinking Stetson Bennett who had 16/14 TD/INT in 12 games at a Juco is a legitimate candidate to “be in the mix”.

I don’t actually expect SB to win the starting job. He’s good enough to be number two..we already know that. I’m not “deriding” anyone. If one of these guys turns out to be the starting QB at UGA, I’ll love him.

Stetson will be in the mix in the spring. The defensive guys will tell you that he can play. But his height isn’t conducive to being a pocket guy.
It’s going to be an interesting battle. Mathis is gifted but has been set back by his unfortunate health issue. That was/is a tough thing go through and I hope he can play and even excel at QB.
Buck is a true freshman and will hopefully be that pro-style QB that Kirby wants to develop (with some legs).
The problem here is experience level. Fromm overcame that as a TF.
But still..an ACC transfer? I worry.
What happened to the kid from Cal?

  7. I’m not NEARLY as interested in the QB situation going into 2020 as I am the question of WHAT ON EARTH are they going to do at the OC position?

I don’t think Coley is a horrible OC, I just think he’s merely average or slightly above average — as a play-caller. And I think he is probably average or below-average as a QB coach.

I think a change needs to be made. I’m not smart enough to know what the change needs to be, but I know if Coley is the sole OC and QB coach in 2020 I will be shocked if we win the SEC and/or make the CFP. Shocked!

He either needs significant help with scheme and/or QB coaching, or we need a totally new OC.

    Period.

Again, I’m like a broken record here, look at his production and record as OC at FSU and Miami and you’ll be (justifiably) concerned.

I hope there’s a little heat to the Zac Robinson rumors. Don’t think he’s quite a potential Joe Brady, but the Rams had some great running concepts, and RPOs/play-action off of that, as well as being very unpredictable as far as run/pass tendencies, which could work great with returning personnel plus a mobile QB.

My neighbor played OL at Wake Forest and is a season ticket holder. He says Newman is a straight stud QB and he (my neighbor) is not the kind of guy that hands out compliments lightly.

Jamie Newman would be a serious contender/favorite to start if Fromm leaves. He’s not quite D’Eriq King-level, but he is very highly thought of. The other guy, Anthony Brown, has battled injuries during his career and seems more like a backup/depth option. I could see Brown being recruited for depth even if Fromm stays (especially if Mathis’s medical situation doesn’t improve).

Just having a legit dual threat fairly high on the depth chart makes a difference. Even though Fields didn’t do much on the field, I’ve often wondered how his presence on the roster helped Fromm because other teams had to invest time and resources every week to scheme for both of them. When fields left, all prep resources centered on Fromm.
