NFL draft analysts have repeatedly questioned Jake Fromm’s arm strength, but the former Georgia quarterback doesn’t see that as the root of his problem throwing the deep ball.
“I think it’s been my feet,” Fromm told The Herald Bulletin. “My feet have not been as clean as they needed to be this past football season. That’s something that we’ve really been hammering throughout this process.
“So, for me, I’m trying to get my feet better and as good as they can be because wherever my feet are, and how they are doing, it’s going to take care of the rest of whatever is going on. It starts from the bottom up. I’m really trying to take care of those.”
This throw:
Good mechanics = on target deep ball.
You know, I’m beginning to think James Coley wasn’t such a hot position coach.
He obviously wasn’t coaching Fromm last year. It basically took Fromm figuring out his problem himself. I’m still amazed he left, but maybe he figured Coley wasn’t going anywhere and he knew he would just regress more if Coley “coached” him another season.

Oh, and that Auburn beatdown was wonderful until Kirby went turtle in the 4th quarter and let Auburn scored to cheap ones. I hope he learned from that.

Me too, Auburn folks really got chippy after we let them back into the game. I don’t care for Auburn!

Really sad. I hope some GM will see the problem and take a flyer on Jake. His upside is pretty high.

Patriots are going to pick him with the 23rd pick. That seems early, I know, but they don’t pick again until 83 and he won’t be around then. I think Belichick wants Jake. He is the kind of QB Belichick likes. And they need a QB now.

Fromm would be available at 83 and he definitely isnt the 23rd best player. Pats dont really have a history of reaching for players.

I could see the Pats trading up if they wanted to get him, but not at 23….JMHO

I read the article before reading the blog post this morning My opinion during/after last season was and still is that Coley was a terrible OC and QB coach. I know others think we had a player problem but I never have.

Not sure I would label him a “terrible” OC, but a non-entity as QB coach? Yeah, I buy that.

I have to agree with Tatum. Especially when considering the ROI. Coley was the 28th highest paid coordinator (both OC and DC). I would have expected a top 20 offense, not a regressive offense as the year went on. Don’t get me started on the run the ball first but never play action mentality that afflicted the his play calling half the year.

So many want to lock on one things that caused the SC loss. It was multiple factor break down. Fromm could have been better, the WRs could of had better separation in man coverage, not dropped balls, and the OC could have called a better game and/or had more plays installed in his toolbox to take advantage of man coverage. I will not be missing Coley as an OC/QB coach. He may perform very well at A&M this year, and he may have help Chaney in prior years. He was not a fit at OC for UGA.

I thought Coley was a good WR coach, with 2017 being one of the better years for WRs at UGA in quite a while. Wims, Hardman and Ridley had raw talent and became dependable receivers. I also believe Coley was okay when he was promoted to co-OC in 2018.
But Kirby put the offense in a terrible position when experienced OCs Cheney and Johnson left. Coley was left with Hartley, Hankton, Pittman and McGee for support – position coaches/recruiters. Then add in Kirby’s all around ultra-conservative approach. Jake was essentially left to fend for himself. Looking back, it was a recipe for problems.

I agree. Ultimately Kirby is responsible for this problem.

Two things can be true at the same time. Fromm wasn’t coached properly leading to bad mechanics and he also has a below average arm. Anyone who has watched him over the past 3 years should recognize he has relatively weak deep strength.
Fromm could’ve come back and got coached up by different coaches in a different scheme and improved the mechanics. He chose not to, which is his right, but he could’ve shown a different side of his skill set that he cannot now, post combine. Maybe he made the right decision or maybe not, but sound bites after pro workouts are not going to convince scouts.

I don’t know, it seemed like most of his deep throws that he missed on last year were because he overthrew them, so not sure I’d chalk it up as arm strength being the primary issue. I mean I agree that he’s nowhere near Stafford, or even Eason in the arm strength category, he’s not gonna burn you on a skinny post very often. But I don’t think he has a weak arm either.

Overthrowing can be a symptom of forcing it. The arc of the ball is also part of it. Hot slants are part of it.

Agreed Bill. Coley couldn’t coach and Fromm’s arm is average at best for a college QB. I’m not sure he’s the mental wizard everyone claims that he is but it won’t matter at the next level. The physical tools just aren’t there. I’d be pissed if my team drafted him in the early rounds.

He’s Case Keenum, at best.

When Fromm was on, he was ON. There were periods where he threw as good as anyone can, and made it look easy.
There’s a reason many draft pundits pegged him as a First round pick heading into 2019.

“I’m beginning to think James Coley wasn’t such a hot position coach.” Ya think, Senator? It’s amazing to me Georgia won 12 games last year. I will go to my grave believing the real reason Fromm left early was to get away from Coley.

That was the worst kept secret of all time. I can not begin to count the number of commentators, analyst, and posters on this web site that commented on his poor foot work through out last season. Many replays pointed out the fact that he was throwing off his back foot and not driving through the ball. That caused loss of accuracy and velocity. That is on the coaching or lack there of last season at the QB position.

Coley was terrible. At everything.

I wonder if poor foot mechanics cause that flipping of the ball in his hands after receiving the shotgun snap too?

Man… who said these things about Coley last year only to get static or worse in response?

Supposedly Fromm did not like the big man and wanted Coley to coach QB’s.
