Jake Rowe ranks Georgia’s position groups on a one-to-five scale for front line talent, overall talent and depth, so the total ranges from three-to-fifteen. Given that tight end and offensive line come in on the low end of the scale at 11.5 each, you get the idea that the roster isn’t exactly starved for talent, but the kicker is that he has two position groups, outside linebacker and cornerback, checking in with a perfect 15.
Cornerback
Front Line: 5 Overall Talent: 5 Depth: 5 Total: 15
The expression “embarrassment of riches” applies here. Georgia dealt with some minor injuries at cornerback last season and those allowed depth to be built. UGA has three experienced, talented cornerbacks in Tyson Campbell, DJ Daniel and Eric Stokes. Campbell made huge strides in his second season and UGA’s hope is that Daniel will do the same although he entered the program from the JUCO ranks. Stokes is as steady as they come. Each of the primary guys at cornerback are among the most physically gifted players on the team and the same can be said for incoming freshmen Kelee Ringo and Jalen Kimber. It’s an impressive group.
Outside Linebacker
Front Line: 5 Overall Talent: 5 Depth: 5 Total: 15The fact that you have a hard time figuring out who is going to put up big numbers out of this group is an indication as to why we have it the highest on this list. It’s almost like a loaded running back group — there are a ton of mouths to feed. Azeez Ojulari and Nolan Smith are going to play a ton of snaps at the primary outside linebacker spot but Jermaine Johnson and Adam Anderson have specialized roles that are really important. Both get a lot of third-down work. Walter Grant is the guy who is asked to play in space on early downs while Robert Beal provides depth. UGA also added a big-time talent in the 2020 class in Mekhail Sherman.
Just hope that bounty of defensive talent is unleashed in an aggressive way that reflects in the Havoc Rate. Having a big weapon with loads of ammunition does little good if it isn’t used to accomplish your objectives. This particular season we really need to give our offense many short fields to operate from, especially in the beginning of the season. Holding the opponents score down is always important, of course, but we need more turnovers and TFL in 2020 to use our defense offensively.
We just need to keep our offense on the field for more than 3 downs next year. Even the best in the world will be a step behind if they’re gassed by the 4th quarter.
This. I swear sometimes shorter fans consider a defense pad if it’s not a sacra tackle for loss every single play. There was nothing wrong with our defense. Other than them beyond the field too much.
All are pulling at the traces to see the Dawgs show their stuff and prove the pundits and us correct. Virus fight first, then watch Dawgs fight.
If we can make up our minds that population sheltering is going to last two more months and help make that happen, then there is a chance. Stutter starts will be losers, we already know that. Let’s work together to shelter away from people any way we can for two more months in order to make a Dawg season possible. Two months is an abominable amount of time to remain away from society for many of us and the pull and push by many to cut things short will confront us at each step.
“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23

It isn’t offensively oriented game now.

I’d hate to lose this season with the defense we have this year. I’m really going to enjoy seeing them play.
