Kirk Herbstreit has lost control of Kirk Herbstreit.

This is what backtracking sounds like.

ESPN college football commentator Kirk Herbstreit caught a lot of heavy criticism in March when he made a comment about the future of the 2020 college football season. Herbstreit said on ESPN radio that he would be “shocked” to see a college football and NFL season happen because of the coronavirus pandemic.

And then, the backlash came. Whether it was fans, coaches, athletic directors or more, everyone had their own opinions on Herbstreit’s take. But on a conference call on Monday morning, Herbstreit said his comments weren’t painted entirely accurate.

“It was kind of misconstrued, misrepresented based on what I said in a radio interview and how it was taken by a lot of people,” Herbstreit said. “…I was almost just thinking out loud. It was the day baseball was supposed to start, Opening Day, and we were reminiscing about how sad it is that we weren’t having any baseball. I was like, ‘Hey, man, this thing’s scary. We may not even have football.’ I was kind of thinking out loud at that point.

“…I’m not making any predications. I really wasn’t that night. I was trying to explain how real this pandemic is.”

Just like now he’s trying to explain how real ESPN’s pressure to deliver product is.

“I’ve talked to a ton of people who are actual decisionmakers in the college game — can’t speak about the NFL — but in the college game. I think what they’ve done is they built 3-4 contingency plans,” Herbstreit said. “Based on what happens with this virus and what Dr. (Anthony) Facui and others recommend, the President, these governors. I think, ‘Okay, everything’s okay, status quo, show up on campus in July, two-a-days, regular season, here we go.’ That’s the first contingency. And then they built it all the way back — the second, the third, the fourth — all the way back to a willingness to start in late February or March, turning it into a spring sport and playing in March, April, May, and playing postseason in June, which I think (would be) a last-ditch effort.

“Which proves how willing the administrators are with the NCAA, the conference commissioners, ADs and presidents, to have a college football season. They’re going to do everything they can, if it comes to that extreme, to be able to potentially have a 2020 season.”

And broadcasts, Herbie.  Don’t forget the broadcasts.

“I’ll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I’ll be so surprised if that happens. Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you’re 12 to 18 months from a (coronavirus) vaccine. I don’t know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don’t know how you can do it with the optics of it.”

People took that to mean that Herbie was saying that he didn’t think we’d have football this fall?

So unfair! Look at the context!!!

So playing in March, April and May and having the postseason on June? Which means at least two games after school is over and bowls/playoffs long after students are gone. And then these same athletes will be expected to come back in six weeks to to start to prepare for the next season. Because they’re students first, right? Or are they a revenue source first? I think this last scenario doesn’t help them much with their pending litigation.

  3. If they play in the spring, I can’t wait for the first player to bail on his team mid-season to get ready for the draft or for the guys at the top of the draft just to skip a spring season rather than risk injury.

See Herbie, doesn’t it feel better to be a good little corporate soldier?

    • With ya Dawg, don’t know who that other slob making half ass comments about no 2020 season of collegiate football was, Agent Herbstreit has gone through mickey’s reindoctrination electrolysis therapy process, Agent Herbsteit will next speak openly about tosu’s lock on the #1 recruiting class and the fact they must be # 1 ranking going into the 2020 season, also the real truth about tosu being #1 while going #2

“Willing” to have a college football season? “Desperate” would be a better word to use. Makes them sound like they are thinking of someone besides themselves.

I don’t know why public figures continually say their comments were “misconstrued” instead of just saying something like “Yeah, that’s what I said at that time, but based upon what everyone is saying at this point, it does look more likely that we will have a season of some sort at some time.”

Come hell or high water there will be a college football season. Money is why the AD’s get out of bed every morning. The real question is why should the kids play? There have already been talks about the 20/21 school year being online only for students, yet somehow we expect college football players to live on campus, train, practice, travel, and play games with zero fans in the stadium. How will the NCAA, university presidents and AD’s explain this?

I heard the question posed this morning “what have you given up because of the coronavirus and now realize you don’t miss?”

I now know my answer: I’ve given up giving a damn what Herbstreit* says.

*Or anyone else paid to talk about sports.

ESPN is getting desperate. Maybe this is the reset button we needed. I would love to see the sports industrial complex starved to death. No more ESPN, no more Finebaum, no more multi-million $ contracts to glorified gym teachers. Maybe in two years we can start over anew.

I still owe Herbstreit a swift kick in the testicles for 2007.

The state of Georgia is opening gyms Friday so I guess we will find out soon if august football practice is possible.

Latest IHME projects Georgia should be able to start reopening in June. Georgia is near the end of the list to safely reopen.
