The list of high-profile recruits to land in Malzahn’s lap over the years is a pretty long one: Mitch Mustain, Jeremy Johnson, Sean White, Woody Barrett, Jarrett Stidham and Joey Gatewood were all ESPN300 prospects. None developed into a star under Malzahn, whose best season came with converted cornerback Nick Marshall.

I don’t think Gus gets as much credit because Cam was such a force of nature. Like how Mike Cavan doesn’t get much credit for coaching up Herschel.

It was one season and Cam looked like a far better passer as a rookie than he did his one season under Gus.

Gus rode Cam the same Weiss rode Brady. It’s taken forever for the glow from that 2010 magic carpet ride to wear off. Literally a decade.

Makes one wonder what exactly Gus is whispering. In all seriousness, the rule change and threat of enforcement about linemen blocking downfield on read-option passes takes away a great deal of the deception that Gus’s offense seems to rely on. I don’t know when that rule took full effect (or changed from three yards to one yard), but I’d be interested in seeing if there’s a correlation.

Auburnfan started questioning Gus’s QB development when Jeremy Johnson tanked. That’s about the time Gus started using outside sources for QB skill training. I still say he’s the best coach Auburn will be able to keep until the Sabot’s battery runs down.
