Screenshot_2020-10-19 Georgia vs Alabama - Game Summary - October 17, 2020 - ESPN

Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

That’s what an onslaught looks like.  Notice how short most of those possessions were:  0:49; 1:11; 1:58; 1:03.  The Dawgs aren’t built to withstand onslaughts like that.  Hell, nobody is.

The rest of the game was the struggle between two good teams I expected.  And, yes, that and five bucks will get me a Starbucks latte.

I’ll give you some bullet points, but there really is one bottom line to the game:  you can’t go minus-2 in turnover margin against a great team like Alabama.  You just can’t.  All the rest is commentary.

  • I thought the offensive line, after some very early struggles, got traction and played well.  Bennett was only sacked twice, had decent pockets to throw from more often than not, and Georgia’s running game, while not dynamic enough to carry the offense alone, was sturdy enough to be a contributor.
  • Speaking of the running backs, White bounced back nicely from a poor game against Tennessee. Milton ran well again and had obviously been coached about ball security.  I’d love to know why McIntosh seemed to disappear in the second half after he had a couple of effective runs in the first half.
  • James Cook had a helluva night, didn’t he?
  • The receiving corps had something of a disappointing night.  ‘Bama went into the game looking to make Jackson something of a non-factor and succeeded.  You would have thought that would have made life easier for Pickens, but Surtain did a nice job limiting him to three catches.  That left Burton playing a bigger role than expected and he was hit and miss in it.  It’s hard to get upset at a true freshman for that.  He’s one I’m hoping really grows from the experience.
  • I’ve already talked about my frustration with Bennett.  My concern from here is the coaches not repeating the same mistake with him that they did (well, substitute Coley for Monken) after Fromm’s disastrous turnover fest against South Carolina last year.
  • If Bennett’s performance was crucial, right behind it in that regard was the defense’s failure to get much pressure on Jones after the first play of the game (talk about your false hope).  You can count the number of incompletions he threw as a good indicator of how often he was under pressure.  In other words, not nearly enough, as he was allowed to sit in the pocket and pick Georgia’s pass defense apart.
  • My perception — and I know there was talk after the game that Lanning brought pressure about as usual — was that after Georgia got burned on the corner blitz that led to Alabama’s first TD, the defense was a bit more wary about that.  I also had the sense that there was more focus on stopping Harris, not that that did much good.
  • That in turn led directly to a brutal night for the secondary.  Campbell, Stevenson and Stokes all gave up touchdowns and were whistled for penalties when they couldn’t keep up in coverage.  I expected Alabama to score.  I didn’t expect to see DBs fall down, misplay passes and bust coverages as much as I did.  LeCounte has certainly had better games in run support.
  • Linebacker play, supposedly the Georgia defense’s greatest area of strength, was just so-so.  Dean and Johnson played well.  Ojulari had his moments, but didn’t take over like we’ve seen him do so often this year.
  • Assuming a rematch in the SECCG, please don’t put Monty Rice in a position to cover Jalen Waddle again.
  • The defensive line was a major disappointment.  It’s the first time in a while I’ve seen them wear down physically, as they were dominated by Alabama’s o-line.  Najee Harris may not have busted a lot of big runs, but it felt like he could have gotten five yards a carry all night long.  Come to think of it, he basically did.
  • Special teams were pretty damned good.  Camarda turned in another faultless performance, both punting and on kickoffs.  When you limit Waddle to a total of something like 25 return yards on the night, you’ve done your job.  (Obviously, that also applies to Georgia’s return teams.)  Kickoff returns continue to be productive.  About the only flaw was Podlesny’s miss, and, let’s face it, by then, the game was already out of hand.
  • As far as coaching goes, it’s not a good game when your head coach, who has a big hand in running the defense, admits he got schooled by the opposing offensive coordinator.  Blame Monken for not running the ball more all you like, but Georgia wasn’t going to win this game giving up 41 points.  I also thought Georgia’s soft coverage at the end of the first half, allowing ‘Bama to sprint down the field for a field goal, was inexcusable.

This was a frustrating game, to say the least.  Georgia led at the half, and, in fact, well into the third quarter, before everything fell apart.  Maybe it’s the SEC West road game jinx, maybe it’s Alabama, but it’s certainly an act we’ve seen before.

The good news is I saw nothing Saturday night to make me think Georgia’s three-year run atop the SEC East is in serious jeopardy.  The bad news is all that means is another trip to the SECCG to face the Tide again.  There’s a lot to fix between now and then if the Dawgs intend to put up a full game challenge.

I have to admit I’m sort of happy the bye was moved up.

      Forget it, FM… It’s Bama. 😉

Actually watching UGA shit the bed against uf in 2015 and South Carolina last year was more painful for me.

I felt like I got what I expected, based on this year’s performance by our offense and by the secondary of the defense, and last year’s defense in the SECCG.

I really don’t know what evidence people had that would indicate another result. Doesn’t make me feel better to know that Kirby Smart is the coach of a perpetually “almost but not quite top tier” team, but I’m getting worn out from the inevitability of things. Just means not being let down so hard when what you knew to be the case is shown to be the case.

My friend put it best about Georgia sports teams – they give you just enough hope to think this is the time we do it. As I’ve grown older, I have come to put sports in their proper perspective of life, but I can also say that I’m growing tired of being provided so many opportunities to say how fortunate I am. I’d like to be a little selfish every once in a while…

Nobody will see this now, I had to work today so I’m here now…..I predicted that our O would need to enter into a shootout and our D would be on the field too long and we would throw the ball 40 times. That’s what happened. No run game, no time for a run game, overmatched O. Done deal. Let’s just hope we beat the hell out of FL, KY, and all the rest.

The turnovers, along with the combination of Jones and those receivers were killer. Special teams were very good once again. The good news is that the offense should, hopefully, find its footing and improve as the season wears on. Bama is going to be a tough hill to climb, but they aren’t insurmountable.

The biggest thing we’re going to need for a win in December is to flip that turnover number, which will be hard to do based on what we saw Saturday.

I agree with you. Lots of tape on things to improve upon. Stetson seeing his progressions better (hit the open guy). Defense not letting those receivers break free off the line. Mixing up the coverage.

It’s hard to beat a team twice. We know what didn’t work. Bama can’t keep the same game plan if they want the same result. Use the bye week to clean up mistakes, then move on to December.

It was sickening to me and for the first time, evah, I turned off the tv with five minutes remaining. Now looking forward, we should thank Bama for showing us what we need to work on so we can beat them in December! That’s all I’ve got.

I lived thru Auburn, Florida and Tennessee owning Georgia for long periods of time. Today I sit here thinking Saban owns Georgia like Spurrier did. Even with seeing Georgia overcome those teams it’s hard to see it with bama until Saban leaves.

The lopsided officiating sucked. I saw some questionable blocks by Bama’s line and I suppose if you are an Alabama D-back as long as you don’t tackle the receiver to the ground BEFORE the ball gets to him, it’s OK.
Bennet literally pointing out a false start then having to get them to jump again before the line judge actually flagged it was ridiculous.
I’ll say this as well and it is strictly my own opinion: Gary Danielson is the most annoying person on the planet when your team is behind. My wife, who kind of watches games but doesn’t get all the stamping back and forth, cursing, and drinking (“Shut up, Gary, G**D*****, drink) said shortly after the start of the 4th “Wow he really likes Alabama, doesn’t he?”.
Another fun fact: As my wife is a fitness nut so I have to pretend to be too… She got us Fitbit watches. My heart rate during Alabama’s drive to end the first half was 139.

I had no problem with this review. From the field angle it was tough to tell if he ever had possession. Obviously this was confirmed after seeing the view from behind, but I think it was a valid review.

      • The fact it took as long as it did to confirm the call to me was the maddening thing. It was almost like they were looking for a reason to overturn it as opposed to some of the other TD reviews where they just buzz down and say everything is good.

To add insult to injury, they didn’t think about reviewing Smith’s last TD catch which was definitely far more review worthy IMO.

    • I got in a spat with my wife about the officiating and the hometown slant Bama gets. She is a casual college football fan and wasn’t buying the bias. I honestly didn’t have the energy or the willpower to explain the screwjob we get every time we play Bama. I just say we have to be significantly better than Bama to beat both them and the edge the referee’s give them. Sadly we weren’t good enough to have the refs become a legitimate factor this time, bug DAMN am I still pissed about that phantom PI call in the end zone when we are just hanging by a thread. And yea, what the Senator said, that review of the touchdown catch had a total “are you SURE you just scored against Bama?” vibe to it.

That was bad but what angered me was watching that pos work the refs HARD for throwing an obvious as fuck intentional grounding flag. Fuck that guy so very much.

But i think thats one of the reasons they get the calls. They (he?) bitch like hell on game day and on the following week and the crews don’t want to eat shit.

And he worked ’em also on the blatant block in the back. I get that all coaches work refs, but Saban rails on obviously proper calls and the officials quickly click to on a “make up call.” Without the film in front of me I can’t recall the exact UGA penalty that nearly immediately followed one of Saban’s rants, but I remember filing it in the category of “unsubstantiated make up call.”

Might want to go back and watch that play, I believe the refs screwed it up. They thought the tight end was a lineman. The ball was certainly in his neighborhood. That was probably Saban’s rant.

For me, the absolute worst was when Pickens was cutoff on his route by the Bama DB with no flag thrown, then the very next Bama series Stokes gets called for PI in the endzone (on 3rd down no less) for doing the exact same thing. Wasn’t why we lost, but definitely gave them an extra 4 points with that BS.

I don’t remember when it was (Sexton is really good Irish Whiskey) but on one of the third and long throws for Bama, they set up twins and the inside guy picked up his man. The safety was shedding the block so he grabbed the UGA players arm, and as the opposite safety crossed to make a play on the ball this already engaged Bama player grabbed the back of the crossing safety’s jersey as well. So one Bama player was holding on two Georgia players at the same time with the fucking official standing right there looking at it. No flag.

I think the mistakes CAN be corrected and a different outcome for us in a rematch is not just looking through bulldog-red-shaded glasses.
No one else on our schedule(or the pros) has three sub 4.3 receivers that we will have to face until we see those rednecks again.
Bama got their collective “D” shit together after giving up historical figures to ole piss. I expect kirby&co. to do the same damn thing.

Mistakes can be corrected. But we need better quarterback play and I’m not sure we can get that from Stetson. I am not blaming him for the loss. Damn good Dawg. Great kid. Wonderful story. We simply have to get better play from the quarterback position to progress beyond being kings of the East. Stetson has been playing college ball for four years now. He’s not getting taller and I don’t think he’s getting any better either. There’s a reason he’s never risen above third string. I’m not sure what can be done this year. Perhaps nothing. But getting, keeping and developing better quarterbacks has to be job one moving forward.

I think you have to give the latter a chance. Starting Mathis or a new guy at UK could be tantamount to not getting the rematch.

Eh, I think Bennett has enough talent for us to win with. He obviously has limits but all QBs do. Monken’s job is to recognize those limits and scheme around them.

I thought Bennett’s timing was a little better this week in that there weren’t any of the underthrown balls. His arm strength is fine.

Hell, Monken told Stetson in August that he wasn’t the guy, so obviously Monken wasn’t scheming for him. Time to put all the eggs in this basket and make it work. Bennett has plenty of talent around him and we’re paying Monken a fortune. Coach the talent and make it work.

Agree, thinks we won’t see a change at QB next game. Would guess that he has grown from last week, now the staff needs to grow with him.

The game last week invaluable. We will stick with him unless there are some major screw ups imo.

Every QB that I have ever seen has a bad game, need to give him the opportunity to see if he can bounce back.

I look for more play action and some bootlegs to help compensate….probably stick with the run just a little more also.

If he can’t get it done, pretty sure you’ll see a change. But changing now would be a mistake imo.

          Liked by 1 person

I also don’t think he has an arm strength problem. This has become more of a myth than fact. That long pass to Cook was beautiful. And the ball than Burton tipped that ultimately was intercepted had a ton of juice on it.

His height is a major issue though. He has had more tipped and batted passes then most QBs have in an entire career playing in college.

          Liked by 2 people

          • Russ

Yeah, tipped balls were definitely a problem last Saturday, plus even when they weren’t tipped, he seemed to throw high because of the fear. But he’s not the only short guy to play QB, so I’d have to think Monken knows of some ways to compensate, either with line calls, roll outs, routes or a combination of all of them. But they need to figure something out. Unless they spend the next two weeks prepping a new QB (and I mean spend ALL two weeks on the new guy) we’re sticking with Bennett until disaster or triumph happens.

No complaints, other than losing big to the top 1 or 2. I believe Clemson benefits too much from walking through 10 games vs. us and Alabama having to face threats 2 or 3 times a year. The days of defense winning football games is over. LSU proved that last year and Bama proved it again. It’s definitely tough to beat a team with great WR that can take the top off any given play.
On the officiating, it is time that SEC schools got together and demand an end to Bama bias. I can’t show the picture here, but the head of the crew is a real estate agent in Tuscaloosa. A second here, a missed call there could certainly be very lucrative to a real estate agent in Tuscaloosa the way Bama turns over coaches.

I’m usually a glass half full guy when it comes to Georgia football, but we aren’t beating Alabama in Atlanta with SBIV under center … we probably will not be able to outscore Florida with him at QB if our secondary plays like they did on Saturday night (in particular, it wasn’t Lewis Cine’s finest hour).

Bennett is a great story, but the fact that he is the starting QB at the University of Georgia speaks volumes for how badly Smart & Chaney managed Justin Fields and how horribly Smart & Coley allowed Fromm to regress and how badly the fan base ragged on Fromm as 2019 progressed.

Florida hasn’t really impressed me, and UGA’s defense is still top notch. Regardless of how I feel about Alabama, (And I feel this way mostly because the schtick is really getting old) they’re an outstanding football team. Losing to them doesn’t hurt nearly as bad as getting poopy pants against someone from the East.
I hope CKS and the gang can get that across to some kids whose egos have to be smarting a little.
As far as SBIV being QB? You’re dead on. Love the kid, but the fact that he’s our guy is a Kirby problem. Kirb’s needs to figure the QB thing out or we’ll definitely be second fiddle to Alabama until after Saban leaves and probably a few years after. The half full part of the glass is that Monken’s offense has got to be more appealing to QB prospects looking to showcase than what the two previous OC’s provided. Speaking for myself it’s a lot more fun to watch even if my BP goes through the roof every time the little you-know-what uncorks one down the field.

If Kirby can keep the teams confidence up I don’t see UGA losing to an East team. OTOH, I don’t see anyone shy of Clemson (maybe) beating Bama. It kind of pisses me off that Bama is going to be the one to likely kick nine shades of shit out of Notre Dame in the playoffs (again) and I would love to see UGA get a shot at the Irish with Monken’s offense. Here’s what I think if Bama beats UGA in the SECCG:
          (1) Alabama
          (2) Clemson
          (3) tOSU
          (4) Notre Dame

          (2) tOSU
          (3) Alabama
          (4) Notre Dame

I left UGA out of the playoff because unless they win convincingly in the SECCG Bama still gets in. I feel fairly certain we’ll see Bama again but I just don’t think Kirby has the offensive firepower yet…

    • I guess based on your comment recruiting doesn’t matter. With the exception of the current starting QB, we have blue chips pretty much starting across the board on offense.

If the raw talent is there, the problem is something else. The only hope is whether Monken can coach the talent up between now and December.

The momentum plays to me were the drive before the half and then the interception near the endzone. I don’t know how you guard all of those receivers but for 3+ quarters we were playing as well as Bama. I am dubious about Stetson after the fact but in the moment I thought that he mainly played well. We can beat this Bama team but it will take playing nearly perfect. Kentucky is going to be tough. I am glad that we have the bye this week to get everyone settled down and focused for the remainder of the season. Beat Kentucky and Florida and we have an old school Tennessee schedule down the stretch to work on Bama and to get better.

That’s where Clemson is, where Ohio State is, and where we aren’t because we mismanaged our quarterback situation. We’re one of the better teams around, but we’re not among the top three because we don’t have an elite quarterback. The worst part is we did and he left.

I said after the arkansas game if our best QB was a 5 foot nothing walk on, we had a definite ceiling and forget about winning an sec or national championship as evidenced by the fact that no sec or national champion had ever been led by a walk on QB. I then got a bunch of flack from guys like corch who tried to say stetson was just like kyler murray or baker mayfield because Kyler and baker and doug flutie were short too!!!! I then responded that they could either admit I was right then or admit I was right later, well guess what’s, it’s later, guess who was right.

I think the existential question is whether it’s ok being the best team in the east (which to be fair to Kirby is still an improvement over the last 8 years of the richt era) but never good enough to seriously challenge for the sec championship and by extension a playoff berth much less a national championship because the facts are pretty damning.

We’ve PLAYED for just one national championship in the last 35+ years (for context, trevor lawrence has accomplished more than our program) and won only 1 playoff game

We can’t beat alabama even with our best team in decades (2017)

Our seccg margins of loss and victory are getting worse and worse and that’s only going to continue this year assuming we get there (reasonable case we most likely still win the east)

Our offense is still stagnant and will once again waste an elite defense

Folks, that ain’t knocking on the door. That’s slowly slipping away after getting the door slammed in your face from your high water mark in 2017.

I think we can all agree that SBIV is no Baker Mayfield.

The existential question applies to the entire SEC, not just the east. Hell for that matter all of college football…

Clemson plays one difficult game per year and that would be their playoff berth. How does that typically work out for them?

      Yes, that’s true and maybe.

Monken’s offense is much more explosive and fun to watch than Chaney’s or Coley’s, although that’s an admittedly low bar.

      Tyler Simmons was onsides.

Alabama is the soulless terminator of CFB. Every time some hero kills the damn thing it shows back up in some new and improved version of itself.
Sarah Connor (UGA fans): “Can you stop it???”
Kyle Reese (Kirby Smart): ” With these weapons? I don’t know but we have to try.”

In regards to clemson and ill lump Ohio State into this category, they’re elite teams that play subpart competition as opposed to teams that only look good because they play sub par competition. I know that because they play well even against great competition as evidenced by their success in the CFP, including against Alabama. UGA can’t make that claim. For example, clemson is 6-3 in the college football playoff including including 2-2 against Alabama, trust me they would do just fine in the SEC, especially if they played in the sec East. Or to answer your question, it’s working out pretty damn well for clemson.

I agree to a point. Clemson is without a doubt an elite team. That being said, if you put Clemson back in the SEC East (Which I wouldn’t mind) I think they’d have some ups and downs against much stiffer competition and they would have to beat Alabama at least once every year just to get to the playoffs. My point was everyone in the SEC has to contend with the literal “elephant” in the room. Clemson and Ohio State do not have that hurdle.
While I’m on my soapbox about Clemson (No kidding, they are a really good team) they have had back to back legitimate Heisman Candidate QB’s and I am extremely jealous. I would love to see TL behind this offensive line and with this defense, I’d also like a pony.

Your final Kyle Reese (Kirby Smart) comment should more accurately read: “Well, we have the same weapons they do, but they just shoot them better. Might need to look into our weapons instructors.”

Real out felt like the whole “new offense with no spring practice starting the fourth string walk on QB who got very limited reps during the limited offseason” thing finally got us.

I didn’t think we looked outclassed, we just played like total garbage against a team who clearly already had their act together for the season when we clearly don’t.

If Bennett wasn’t making a bad play his receivers made them for him. Then those mistakes put the D in bad positions against the best O n the country. The plays were largely well called… this is one of those few games where it clearly does fall on the players’ execution. Sure the coaches are responsible for the preparing them to execute but again…. short offseason, 4th string QB.

Play like that again and it’ll be even worse next go round. But I can’t see that happening. Not to say we’ll definitely win in Atlanta, but this team can do it if it finds some answers.

“The receiving corps had something of a disappointing night.”
“That left Burton playing a bigger role than expected and he was hit and miss in it.”

Maybe its me, but I feel we’ve got extraordinary talent at WR and TE, and we’re not getting much out of it. DRob was a non factor. The ongoing Landers project appears to have been abandoned for one game (thankfully). Pickens seems to be struggling to make as much impact as last season. Where would we be without Jackson? McKitty and Washington look like terrific weapons we refuse to let loose. I guess I expect a lot more from our WRs/TEs than we’re getting.

    • Saturday night was the last time until December Pickens will play against someone his equal (Surtain) who doesn’t need consistent help over the top. Between now and then, the consistent demand to have a safety available to help on #1 will help the rest of our guys (Jackson in particular) find space.

More balls to the TEs – the constant Siren song of Georgia football. Hopefully, we’ll find ways to keep the TEs from being 3rd and 4th offensive tackles.

The question is whether SBIV (if he continues to be QB1) will develop over the next couple of weeks to go through the progression rather than throwing to his first pre-snap read.

Meh, remember Bennett has only been taking snaps with the one’s since the Arky game. Until the 3:00 mark of the 3rd quarter we were in this game and going toe to toe. The offense will improve and we’ll see bama again in the SECCG. Though the 4th quarter absolutely sucked, I’d be more worried about the SECCG if we had won this one, no one beats the GOAT twice in a season.

When you play Bama you can not be a diminutive team…coaching and QB.
I do not think Bennett sees the field quick enough. Plus, his pocket presence is not good enough. In the clip why not move up quicker and see better passing lanes thru your O line. And his accuracy leaves a little to be desired in SEC games. If not, he would have been a starter much sooner.
He has no say about his size or his story. He is good.
But if I was Kirby’s coach I’d kick his ass a few times. Three seasons, 3 OC’s and 2 O line coaches…all with a 2 year starter at center who asks himself before each snap…”peering thur my legs is he 5’8″ OR 6’2″”…his doubt or his skill set causes those low snaps or over the head kind…either one the whole play is off by now.
We all saw and lamented about Fromm’s regression. So how does Kirby explain his QB situation. Maybe he should call Pruitt, or better yet get a QB coach.
Watching the O’s battery is like laying you hands palm down waiting for a hammer to fall on them.
Just maybe if Smart can get an offense up to 75% of what Bama has [after all he went to school last Saturday, and hopefully he took good notes”], then his much acclaimed Defense would look lights out and could go 3 and out..

I’m gonna get crucified for this,,,
It would show a bunch of asses in tight silver pants.
It would look like a toddler running across a yard with a stolen camera. “No Stetson, no!!”
It would look like some green grass with white lines on it. You can hear Dad yelling in the background “throw the damn ball Stetson!”
There would be an orange goal line pylon getting quickly closer…

      I love the kid.

After Saturday night I did not see much difference in Chaney’s offense and the new OC’ offense. The one thing they have in common is that Saban knows how to shut them both down in the second half.

FWIW the box score I’m looking at shows Pickens with 5 catches.

How bout Camarda running Waddle out of bounds and talking shit to him on the sideline after his punt return that got called back on a penalty??
