Rising and falling, preseason 2021 edition

To give you an idea how thin a reed some of these rankings rest upon, note that 247Sports has adjusted its preseason rankings in part by moving Ohio State past Georgia into fourth.  How come?

Ohio State did get a surprise, however, with the announced return of Chris Olave as well as the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class.  That sees Ohio State pass Georgia for the No. 4 spot.

This, despite losing what is likely a top five pick in the NFL draft in Justin Fields.  And here I thought quarterback was the big deal in college football these days.

One other thing that gets me — check out the Georgia analysis.

The Bulldogs drop one spot in the updated 247Sports poll. Georgia finished 2020 in a strong way, not losing a game since the transition to JT Daniels at quarterback. Daniels returns for 2021 with some other interesting quarterback names in the conversation. Five-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff is one of the headliners of the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class and Gunner Stockton is already committed for 2022.

“Here’s what’s fascinating,” Josh Pate said in his review of Georgia’s recruiting class. “If you were to be an Oregon State fan, let’s say, and you were watching recruiting as a whole. You look at the way Georgia recruits, and they are top five every, top three every year, you would think, I can’t even imagine – that’s on a different planet than anything I’ve been used to. And yet, if you’re a Georgia Bulldog fan, you’re looking at your class and you’re thinking, this is really good, this is really good, then you cut your eyes over to Tuscaloosa, and you cut your eyes up to Clemson and you cut your eyes up to Columbus.

“Again, when we were talking about Ohio State, Georgia lives in that same world and so you can look at it as being totally elite which they are every year, but Trey, you know, because we write about it all the time, we talk about it all the time on the college football daily you’re mentioning it all the time. It’s about where we are in relation to where they are. And right now as good as this class is, I mean it’s not even the top class of the SEC, just to give you an idea of what the waters in the SEC are like.”

I confess that I cut my eyes over to Tuscaloosa, because what Saban brought in was insane.  But I’m not sitting here with tears in my eyes because Smart’s had to settle for the fourth-best signing class in the country.  (Besides, how much are any of these classes going to make a difference this season, anyway?)  Especially when he’s done such a good job digging out of the hole that was his quarterbacks room a year ago.  And you?

Georgia had the number one class in 2017 and it was one of highest rated class recorded. After the 2021 draft take a look at how many players from bama’s class are drafted in the first round and how many from UGA are first rounders.

2 things -1. best recruiting class doesn’t always pan out as best players/team, but high level recruiting is necessary to be in position to win a championship.

Development of talent is at a premium- see Clemson as a coaching up example.

According to 247, I thought we finished with the 3rd best class in the country and the Suckeyes were 2nd and Clemson 4th?

Is that not how it went down?

They bounced LSWho over us and Clemson and put them in 3rd. Think it’s because of the number of commits…

LSU had a highly-rated guy sign late, that put them 1.06 points ahead of us for third. Clemson is still at number five.

So much work remains to be done–on the part of the coaches and the recruits themselves–for this top 4 recruiting class to morph into a top 4 football team, that I’m really not too concerned with our recruiting rankings or anybody else’s. Just glad we got some recruits who have a good chance of turning into really good football teams.

  4. I would have had more respect if they simply had said, “look, when we ranked the teams earlier, we really forgot about the fact that the Big 10 is Ohio State and everyone else and Georgia will have to face both Alabama and Clemson.”

At least that is more intellectually honest than the gobbledy-gook after-the-fact effort to look smart about the change based on a single WR returning.

I think age and perspective comes into all of this. I was 21 years old when Georgia won their last National Championship. Then watch them barely miss in the next two seasons. The rest of Dooley’s tenure can only be described as weird.. Jan Kemp, great RB recruits; not as good on defense (Erk Russell to Georgia Southern). The came a wasted decade ( the 90’S) and this was with players like Champ Bailey and Hines Ward coming through Georgia. The promise of the early years of Richt (2002 – just unlucky). Just missed in 2012. Just missed in 2017. But what I can say is that Georgia has never been this good. The talent, the facilities, the focus, the commitment – never. It will come. So I’m quite comfortable living in this stratosphere, knowing that sooner or later the damn ball/calls/whatever will fall our way.

    • We have the best coaching staff ever assembled at Georgia. And that includes – 2 pts for Muschamp even. 🙂 We got a legit S&C program after it was in the toilet. Best Facilities ever, some of the best in the nation (of course, to hell with you fans and tennis and baseball, but oh well). Thats combined with 4 years of amazing recruiting. We have a ton of money, i mean its there at least. We apparently have the best pre-op to rehab team in the world.

This is not a bad place to be, and outside of the usual other 4 or 5 teams mentioned, there’s another 125 that would be happy to be us.

The margins between these classes is negligible. If you take Alabama’s 4 year average and Georgia’s, it’s basically identical.

I’d say Alabama’s personnel advantage, to the extent they’ve had one, has been in position emphasis, especially WR. They were marginally better at corner this year, Georgia much better at safety until LeCounte went down.

Biggest difference was a mature QB/offense versus a developing one. That evens out or even flips a little in Kirby’s favor as Alabama replaces damn near everyone on offense, field and sidelines.

Alabama’s ranking is momentum from what people spent 13 weeks watching last season. Gee, not like that’s ever proven a poor heuristic in college football analysis before.

Cutting your eyes towards little nicky is ok, UGA football has to deal with it (period), now the others, no worries at what they do, say, anything…hopefully we will see them in a stadium near me in january….

Being a perpetual student with a case of terminal dumbass I was searching the definition of heuristic when after punching in
the first three letters, heu, what pops up?
Heupel. As in “Josh Heupel will shortly discover or learn something for himself in a hands-on or interactive heuristic approach to learning”.
If a man learns from getting stabbed in the back by hillbillies and his ass whooped by his opponents then Heupel is about to get a PhD.

You’re too kind, sir. I’ll tell you what ol buddy ol pal, if I was down on Singer Island or the Keys I wouldn’t be sitting on my ass refinishing a stock on a vintage Savage 99 and randomly checking posts on GTP.
I’d be sitting on bucket with a live pinfish under a cork trying to catch a random fish. Maybe sanding on this stock between swallows of Corona.

I spent yesterday and today out in this shitty weather fixing an underground gas line that wasn’t properly installed 20 years ago, so naturally it decides to let go when it’s 38 and raining. For the backfill today it was 27 and 25 mph winds. It’s a thing for me not to send my guys out into shit like this unless I’m with ’em but I’m rethinking that while I’m thawing out this evening with a glass of Old Forrester. Brrrrr.
            I think it’s sunny and 75 in the keys….

Dude. I lost over $15K of revenue due to the snow in Arkansas and Tennessee this week. Also, the docks in Los Angeles have already cost me/us/employees any revenue until April at the most beneficial projections. The imports from Japan are REALLY messed up right now.

Gawd I hope the weather changes and the dang ports open up.

Recruiting is not math it’s more like horseshoes close counts. Stay in the top 5 every year you’ll always be in the hunt. Even starting a 4th string QB against the NC we had a better chance than most. My guess starting 4th string QB’s will not happen often.

If I “cut my eyes” anywhere it is at how much easier it is for Clemson and OSU to get into the playoff picture. Georgia will have to beat a very good team from the SEC West most likely Alabama to get in. I am still dubious that the loser of the SEC Championship game unless its Bama gets in. Clemson if they beat us is going this year, OSU barring a “disastrous” season is going this year.

The question you might ask yourself, if you’re the kind of Georgia fan that cuts eyes to Tuscaloosa, Clemson, or Columbus when it comes to recruiting and overall talent, is: what does each of those teams do with Stetson Bennett and D’Wan Mathis at QB the first 2/3’s of the season?

Bama may still be the team. Maybe. OSU or Clemson? No chance.

      Except:

None of those teams would ever find themselves in that position. Georgia did. Dabo and Day both would’ve played Daniels much sooner. That in and of itself is a failure that must wholly be owned by Kirby.
The Suckeyes and Clemson play in the B1G and ACC respectively, and have much more wide-open, coach-controlled offenses than Georgia does. Their records would not have changed with either Bennett or Mathis starting 5 games in those weak-ass conferences. Clemson would’ve still lost to Notre Dame. tOSU wouldn’ve still gone undefeated. No change.

I don’t need to be. Unlike some of y’all here, when Daniels and Kirby said what they said about him being ready to play and sitting due to coach’s decision, I actually believe them.

It’s extremely weird that y’all don’t, that y’all have woven some completely untrue story about how he wasn’t ready.

It’s the Mandela Effect. It’s an absolute perfect example of the Mandela Effect.

Goodness Corch, I thought I made assumptions in my post, but damn. As Bluto might say, “None” and “would’ve” are doing a lot of lifting there.

And honestly, if you don’t think Indiana beats OSU in that game with a Bennett in place of a Fields, I’m not sure of your former opinions on the Fields situation mean as much. Just sayin.

Definitely the coaches need to coach up and earn those salaries, but what are the players doing? Will we see ESPN spotlight Pickens and all the receivers catching 100 balls AFTER every practice (Be like Devonta!), will they learn to read the defense just like the QB and adjust routes accordingly to find space, is JT correcting all his footwork and weight distribution concerns (does he TRUST his knee)? Are all the team leaders doing and projecting the extra things to make the 2021 squad extraordinary? It will take extraordinary to ring the CFP Champtionship bell.

The “hole” that was the QB room for UGA last season was caused by one guy committing and then backing out right before the season began leaving the team in a lurch. Fuck that guy (I’m not going to dignify him by saying his name). BTW, he’s not even that good. He’ll be lucky to get drafted at all. Good riddance.
