“We apologize to the university and our readers for the errors.”

The AJ-C blinked.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday issued corrections to its recent investigation into the University of Georgia football program’s handling of sexual abuse allegations against its players and recruits.

The corrections were issued in response to a nine-page letter sent July 11 by UGA attorney Michael M. Raeber. The AJC declined the letter’s demand for the article to be retracted.

AJC editors and attorneys investigated each complaint raised by university officials in the letter and found two elements of the story that did not meet the news organization’s journalistic standards, Editor-in-Chief Leroy Chapman said in a statement.

The AJC review found no instances of fabrications in the story, as the university’s letter had alleged, Chapman said.

In a statement, the AJC said the article’s author, investigative reporter Alan Judd, was terminated for violating the organization’s journalistic standards.

They can split hairs all they want, but if it walks like a black eye and talks like a black eye, it’s a black eye.

************************************************************************

Upon reflection, two other thoughts to add:

  • It’s a chickenshit move to stick a story like this behind a paywall.  [Ed. note:  Paywall has been removed.]
  • The article says nothing about how Judd was vetted when he was hired, or how his editors allowed his work to appear as it did.  That, too, is chickenshit.

Hammer coming?

Matt Hayes suggests so.

After Smart spent his 30-minute session on the big stage answering 13 questions — 12 of which were softballs from Fred’s Podcast and the Johnny Ballpark Franks of the world, and all of 1 about the speeding and reckless driving issues engulfing the offseason — I got him on my radio show in Jacksonville and got a chance to delve deeper.

It took 1 question to figure out where this is headed: More than likely, there will be suspensions on the way for Georgia players who haven’t heard the message from the head coach.

I asked Smart if he believed in legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s philosophy that the bench is a coach’s best friend for issues on and off the field. Smart agreed, and then took it one step further when it pertains to problems off the field.

“Absolutely, there are times when (benching players) is the best avenue for them,” Smart said. “You need to sit. You need to come over here and understand that this game can be taken away from you at the drop of a hat. You better appreciate the game more, if you can’t learn to do the right things off the field.”

I then asked if it were difficult for players of today to grasp that philosophy, and he said, “They don’t understand until you take action sometimes. Action can be all kinds of things. Punishment, discipline, education. They need it. I needed it when I was that age.”

We shall see.

The thing is, I suspect that if that were in fact to happen, Smart wouldn’t come out and state the reason for the game suspension.  If he doesn’t announce it outright, in certain quarters, is there enough to connect the dots in that case?  My bet is no.

“No chance.”

Kirby Smart, head coach, wouldn’t waste a scholarship on Kirby Smart, recruit.

But would he take him as a preferred walk on?  After all, he’s got a five-star heart.

Still a dick

Yep, he’s still got it.

What it’s really called?  Ancient history.

Moar tactical retreat

Two more AJ-C pieces from SEC Media Days, both of which mention the traffic violation problems while steering clear of the sexual assault allegations:

I wouldn’t say the paper has decided to abandon the field just yet, but we may be a few days away from Chip Towers tweeting “Alan Judd?  Never heard of him.”  (I keed, I keed… I think.)

“Is it making a travesty of the game?”

Well, I could think of a lot of things that would qualify for that, but in this particular instance, apparently not, at least not all the time.

The comparison to the Gator Chomp is apropos, methinks.  It’s just weird to hear the SEC’s coordinator of officials do nuance.  I didn’t think they were wired like that.

That being said, I’m now looking forward to the first time Florida and Texas face off against each other.

Birth of a catchphrase

Behold and marvel at this year’s three words we’re bound to recite to death.

Of course, if they wind up three-peating, it’ll parse like Shakespeare.
