Coaching with thin skin

I just heard the crew on 790 the Zone discussing Paul Johnson’s reaction to questions about his play calling on the last series of the game as well as his approach to the game during the prior week.

Evidently, somebody’s a wee bit sensitive to criticism, because CPJ responded by asking (and I’m probably paraphrasing here) “what has Georgia done since 1980?” and advising any Tech fans discouraged by mockery to smack the other party in the face.

I’m glad the loss wasn’t that important to them.

Ah, the testy little genius displays his less winsome side. Who’d have ever thought it would be like that?

Here’s one for you, Napoleon: What has Georgia done since 1980? They’ve beaten Tech’s ass like Tech stole something at the rate of 22 wins, 8 losses. All the pouting and posturing about your unstoppable offense and your unmatched ability to see what the defense is doing and summarily dismiss it with a brilliant adjustment doesnt change two facts: One, you got your ass handed to you last Saturday night in your own backyard by a team struggling to stay above .500 for the season. Two, Tech certainly deserved to win last year because it played harder than UGA did, not because you’re such a freaking genius. UGA didnt get manhandled, or fooled, UGA played lazy and got smacked by a team that kept coming on after them. Props to Tech for that, but don’t mistake it for more than it was. A team that had gotten its ass handed to it 7 years in a row finally got up off the deck against a team that had gotten a little too fat and happy against the perennial pinata.

In other words, Napoleon, UGA’s A game beats Tech’s A game. Our C game doesnt beat your A game, probably never has. You nerds can muster up one of those mismatches a couple of times a decade. Get used to getting your testy little ass beat, and remember what happened to the LAST genius operator of an unstoppable option attack who was the head coach at GTU. You aren’t a former GTU QB, so I figure two more losses like this one and you’ll be taking your flexbone to the high school DVD circuit with Tony Franklin and HIS unstoppable attack.

Gosh, my long-term memory is a bit fuzzy so I cannot elaborate on much of anything past last June…

But I do recall about 96 hours ago we unleashed a turf monster against you. He wanted you to know that Grant Field tastes like chicken. Thanks you.

Think about how we’re going to treat you when we are good again (real soon)? Methinks you were outcoached, coach.

  5. I remember when CPJ was first hired and doing all the hand-shaking and back-slapping on the speaking circuit, all the Techies were giddy about how he’d already internalized GTU’s traditions and the concept of what it meant to be a “Tech man.”

Indeed, I’d have to say he has: the sour grapes directed toward Athens, the rationalizing of losses, both the inferiority complex and the hair-trigger denial mechanisms whenever anyone mentions said complex . . . yep, he’s already a “Tech man” through and through.

      well played, sir.

It meant everything to them when they hadn’t beaten us in 7 years. Win one time, I guess they figured it might be 2016 or so before they win another one, suddenly, “we’ve got bigger fish to fry.”

I guess we see what the correct whiiiiiiiiiiiine is to serve with those fish, dont we?

Later this afternoon, CPJ’s publicist/receptionist is expected to release a more refined statement of what CPJ really meant to say:

“That wasn’t right. It was a bad deal. It will be forever in the mind of Paul Johnson and in the minds of our football team. We are not that stupid. Really. We’ll handle it, and it’s going to be a big deal. I am going to have a work-study intern from the Tech English Department (do we have one?) ghost a book about it too. Paul Johnson will not forget Ben Jones rooting around in the end-zone like a human Bluebird sod cutter and eating the sod straight off of Bobby Dodd Field. Bobby Dodd Field is not a sod farm. Our players will never forget this. It is a big deal to them too and after they eat the Hedges next year, Sanford is gonna look like it was defoliated by Francis Ford Coppola, Dow and Monsanto. http://www.mobileriverine.com/agent_orange.htm”

When the CPJ publicist was reminded that the first part of the statement was stolen directly from Urban Meyer, the correct response is that if Urban Meyer can steal from Mark Richt Mark’s old line, which incidentally Mark does not seem to use much anymore, of “I’ll stay here as long as they’ll have me here” http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/urban-meyer-says-hell-be-florida-gators-coach-as-long-as-theyll-have-me/1053976
the free flowing transfer of coach-speak from one coach to another remains a sacrosanct practice among the coaching fraternity because after all there is just not enough new and original it is what is stuff to go around.

And Paul Johnson is officially now a yellow jacket since he was indoctrinated into the long-standing tradition of Tech football…the annual loss to Georgia. As much a part of Thanksgiving weekend as turkey and Black Friday for the jackets.

I did a little “tailgating”, if you could call it that, with some tech folks from high school over between IC and Boggs on the Tech campus.

First thing I noticed was that I walked for 5-10 minutes on campus @ around 1pm on saturday and didnt see anyone and you couldn’t tell that there was a game later that day.

Secondly, those guys with the “can’t fix dead” sign were tailgating over near my friends and they had those signs out all day long, as well as starting the standard “what’s the good word” chants and throwing dog treats at any ladies in red and black that walked by. So a rather classy bunch all around.

Overall just made everything more enjoyable…

Wasn’t Paul the Johnson a little prickly earlier this season when another coach (who was it?) accused him of coaching his players to block illegally? In a similar vein, Jim Donnan’s tenure was shortened because among other things he couldn’t stand the scrutiny at this level.

The motto for the 2009 ACC Championship Game should be: “What Time Can You Get Here?”

the rumor that they’ll hold the kickoff for your arrival if you can guarantee a party of four or more is just a rumor….but someone ought to suggest it to the ACC front office. Maybe they wouldnt need quite so many tarps to cover the empty seats.

Amazing to see how arrogant GT fans became after last year, but in light of how insecure they are, it seems to be just a defensive reaction. Pretty pathetic group, and one not worthy of a great deal of discussion. I would still like to move Tech up on the schedule to anearly season game and put them with other OOC games. The finale is too featured a position for a program like they have become. We should be focusing on SEC teams not being distracted by little nerds who don’t really understand football and start verbal fights over the internet on subjects they are clearly not prepared for.

Johnson is somewhat of a surprise. He has always been exposing mucho foreskin, but you would think since he has been progressing through the ranks in babysteps and has now reached the mid-major level, he would act like someone capable of getting a HC job at a major program. His antics this past year, and especially this past week do not help his cause. He may be coaching in little band box stadiums the rest of his career and spend par tof his time selling weenies and popcorn. As for why he might hate America by slamming some of our best men at the Naval Academy, what better place for an anti-American attitude than on North Avenue?

CPJ and Jim Donnan had one thing in common they were self-conscious. CJD was self-conscious about being a Div IAA coach moving up to Div I. Even when he won he would usually say something like not too bad for a Div IAA coach. CPJ is self-conscious about his O, he feels like he must defend the scheme even at the risk of throwing his players under a bus. To be honest both men are/were good coaches and bad PR guys. CJD learned that if you are going to bad mouth the fans you had better win big cause you’ve got no margin of error. As long as CPJ wins ACC GT will put up with his losing to UGA but if he slips just one season his butt is gone.

Do you think CMR could have answered the questions the way he did this year if he had not built up a lot of goodwill over the past? A good rule of thumb for coaches to remember is that one AW-Sh*t erases 1,000 Atta Boys.

Well he tried to downplay the UGA game before the game by saying they were interested in bigger things. What happens when he can’t win the ACC championship game (aka fight for 5th in the SEC east). He will have lost to UGA and his “bigger and better” game meaning he will have nothing and basically will have accomplished exactly what Gailey did. A trip the the ACCCG in a down year for the ACC.

    Like

    • 81Dog

and, like Billy Bob Gailey, he couldn’t beat an average UGA team with the best team Tech’s had in a while.

If we play our A game, it doesnt matter what Tech does. Our A game beats their A game. Our B game beats their B game. Etc, etc. Our C game probably doesnt beat their A game, so they win a couple of times a decade (like, say, in 2008. Give them credit for finally getting up off the deck after we’d been kicking their urine colored behinds since the turn of the century.). PJ confused the fact that it was about time last year for us to gack one up to GTU with his impression that he was a genius.

You’d think a guy that smart would realize that his defense sucks. Maybe he can figure out a flexbone defense, since he already knows all there is to know about his offense (and boy, will he be happy to let you know THAT).

CPJ’s message is of the utmost simplicity. We lost, fair and square. Hats off to UGA. He did not downplay the game, as much as point out the simple fact that beating UGA will not win the ACC championship, which is his teams main goal. But unlike most Mutt fans, CPJ is thinking long-term. He knows he’ll be here for a while and he’ll get his shots at UGA. He is reasonably pointing out that SEC fans think any inter-conference win for them “devalues” the other conference, but asks why that was not the case in the 90’swhen FSU was regularly beating the Gators, even when they were playing for an SEC title. He’s not going to accept 2nd tier status or the double-standard set by SEC media lap-dogs.

I don’t know if what you’re expressing is hope or whistling past the graveyard, Senator. I do know that we just lost, and our coach is rattling ya’ll’s cages, but good. CPJ is trying to shift the paradigm of his program at a mental level as well as on the field. He’s not taking it for granted that past is always prologue. Its a noble effort, and the Dawg Nation has definitely taken notice, for what it’s worth.

            Like

            • Hope or whistling past the graveyard? Neither, PJ. Tech over the long haul is never going to be able to recruit at the level that Georgia does. And while I respect Johnson’s coaching ability greatly, on a long-term basis, I’ll always go with the Jimmies and Joes over the Xs and Os.

Don’t flatter yourself, we are just astonished at how the GT program, and its backers, over reacted to a fluke 3rd quarter last year. It isn’t like you guys dominated the game, it was very much like the Kentucky game this year for Georgia, similar score and control of the game. Our guys came out without focus and 2-3 mental mistakes allowed both of you to post winning scores. I don’t think anyone felt there was a “changing of the guard” as a result of those performances. GT is still more of a nuisance than a threat. Doesn’t mean you cannot have an upset occasionally, but GT became irrelevant to me when they left the SEC. I feel we should play you, and treat you, like we do Ga. Southern. UGA doesn’t need you for legitimacy, you on the other hand….

Macallanlover, you are dead right and I did not realize it until just now. The Dawgs actually beat the Nerds 3 out of the 4 quarters in the ’08 game–just had several breakdowns in the 3rd quarter which allowed the Nerds to score enough points to win the point total at the end, and thus the game. Very similar to the UK-UGA game this year. And leaving the SEC was definitely a FU that has hurt their program over the years. They were actually in an even worse situation during the years they were an independent because that really had a negative effect on their recruiting.
