I know the penalty put the D on their heels but they failed and cost us the game. The penalty didn’t lose the game for us but it did have impact. Georgia football involves having a D you can count on, one you want ON the field, not one that you hope stays OFF.

heh…I used to be able to dream big but living down here I’m dreaming like a guy in a Rogers Redding bar because of shellshock from our results v. Florida. I’ll take a 41-7 or a 51-7 win any day. What I really hope for is a crushing defense for a change.

Right, but momentum plays a huge part. Say UGA kicks off and LSU gets it at the 20-30. Now players are looking at 80 yards and little time. But instead they get it on GA’s side, if I remember correctly and all the sudden it’s like, we can win this.

Actually, the real problem is that it made us rely on our biggest weakness at the time – kickoff coverage. To compound the problem, we pull out some sort of ridiculous coverage play we don’t even know how to run.
By getting the good return, LSU then didn’t have to rely on their biggest weakness – Jordan Jefferson.
I don’t disagree with your point, but I would’ve LOVED to see how that game turned out without the penalty.

Roger didn’t go to Georgia Tech for nothing, he can make an excuse only a Techie could love. The only good thing about Roger being the National guy is that his sorry butt is no longer the SEC Head dickwad. Now maybe UGA will catch a break.

Am I the only one who sees a lot more harm to the game from this taunting rule than any act of taunting?
Let me ask another way. If Tebow had dreds, a grille, and inked up arms, does he get away with half of the crap he pulled after a three yard first down run??
If Fairley diving at Murray’s knee and then doing the WWE style “check out my championship belt” gesture doesn’t get caleld, why even have subjective rules at all. I’d rather them get rid of all the taunting / celebration rules.

I think right in that question there, though, is the logic to this: remove all ambiguity and take the judgment out of the call, and what will happen? The only calls that will be made are the ones that were so obvious even a Rogers Redding could have seen it.
To wit: AJ’s call and several famous others (such as Jake Locker’s) happened TWO years ago before they made the penalty even stricter in the off-season preceding 2010. What was the response? Hand-wring, gnashing of teeth, calls for sacrificial bonfires, etc. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I remember that there were far fewer controversial celebration penalties last year compared with 2009 when the referees could interpret the call. So they had that issue with the Kansas State player in the Insight Bowl…he did actually commit the act. Now, you make the penalty even harsher, there can be no possibility of misinterpretation and the fear of losing points makes it that much clearer. All of it.
This should just about take the penalty off the table. I bet they go the whole year without having to call it more than once in all of D-1.

You’re probably right. It’s not often that we see college kids go into celebration mode before they score (save the occasional somersault/leap before getting into the endzone – I’m looking at you Tony Gilbert and Damien Gary). Celebrating after the score would still be a dead ball foul.

gastr1, any good conspiracy theorist worth his salt will take that bet because if conference business purposes require ‘bad’ calls, which coincidentally seems to have been the case since we started having a team in the BCSCG every season, this eraser is going to be called more than once (such as, whenever needed) and it will be in a big 3:30 SEC game or a big night game involving one or more of our highly ranked team(s) from Oct. 22, 2011, through Dec. 3, 2011.

Do you mean like Tyler Bray in the UT bowl game? How about Chris Fairley during most of the regular ’10 season? Or Tim Tebow on virtually every scoring play for his entire career. There are countless other examples. And the NCAA is going to let the refs, with their history of dubious calls, take away scores because of their subjective interpretations of what is a celebration? Slippery slope and IMHO very dangerous for the NCAA. I hope this causes a complete furor because of an obviously biased call in an important nationally televised game (like the Big-10 Championship Game or some such) and results in the downfall of the NCAA which, after all, is only viable as long as its member institutions are willing to follow its edicts. I can see where it is possible that something so obviously awful and unfair happens that an entire conference decides to withdraw from the NCAA. If one BCS conference leaves look for others to join it in leaving and forming a new governing body. Bye, Bye NCAA. They certainly deserve it.

Rogers Redding is a douchebag. The fact that he has advanced in the world of college football refereeing is a red flag that things are not right with college football. IMHO the guy should be in the penitentiary for fixing games. Instead he gets promoted..
