I’ve been curious to see if Georgia’s proclivity for the big play last season (3rd nationally in plays of 20+ yards) would garner any attention from the stat gurus in the offseason and it seems that it has.
There are many ways of measuring a passer’s efficiency, but the one that offers the most bang for the buck is yards per pass, or, even better, yards per pass+. Below is the top 25 by YPP+ and their national ranking in YPP among players with at least 200 pass attempts. For comparison is the top 25 defenses. The dYPP+ means, for example, that Florida allows 2.51 fewer yards per pass than the average defense.
Against an SEC schedule, Aaron Murray averaged 10.1 yards per pass, but should have averaged 10.4 yards per pass against an average schedule, a full yard better than any other quarterback with a significant number of attempts. He faced two of the top four and three of the top 10 defenses by dYPP+.
And Bill Connelly has adjusted his S&P+ rankings – “Explosiveness (and the ability to prevent it) is more of a winner in college football than efficiency, and strong PPP numbers were more indicative of quality than strong success rates.” – and the result is that Georgia’s 2012-3 offense came in third nationally.
Against an average schedule?
I thought UGA played the lightest, easiest schedule EVA this year. Complete with all the Little Sisters of Poor.

The improvement in Ole Miss and Vandy during the season made Georgia’s schedule more impressive than it appeared preseason.

Hmm. I wonder what we should glean from that? 🙂

Ole Miss played Texas A&M and LSU very close but the Dawgs blew them up. Vandy played everyone pretty close and Dawgs hung a blowout on them. Vandy played uSC tight…… Dawgs not so much. I guess it is the SEC . Any team on any Saturday right?

Works for me. Wish it worked for all of the media types who still think preseason polls are a good idea.

Likewise, the decline of the Big 10 and other northern schools made the ND schedule into a joke.

Now imagine what we could do if we could throw a screen! To a running back, I mean … pay no attention to Mr. Conley running 87 yards down the field.

We carved up a lot of teams. Just plain crapped the bed against SC.

Aaron Murray vs. Tajh Boyd should be quite entertaining this fall. Also, for all of the talk about sorry SEC offenses, the top 25 qb’s in ypp+ features 8 from the SEC.

The offense was truly a thing of beauty last season on many many occasions.

I don’t envy other teams playing our O. Sorta like playing with a striking Diamondback. Just don’t know when or how it may strike, but you know it’s going to happen. Now if Todd can bring the D to match, this can be the beginning of a long streak. If we beat Clem and SC at the beginning then it will be Katy-bar-the-door time. And you tailgaters will have enough to brag and drink about for the rest of the season.
Hope the caduceus wearers stay off the field (practice and game) and as many kids as possible realize their fondest playing dreams that they have had since childhood. Something tells me that these guys are ready to wear the G proudly and play like banshees against FU and SC while avenging an SEC CG opponent from two years ago. Sic’em Dawgs!
