Oh, what could go wrong?

Maybe I’m missing something, but it sure seems like the new targeting rules are setting up as Penn Wagers’ wet dream.

2013 looks like it may go down as the best year for officiating evah.

    And it ain’t just the 15-yd penalty. If a player is ejected in the second half, he has to be suspended for the 1st half of the next game; i,e., if Matthews is judged to be ejected for a hit in the 2nd half of the Clemson game, he will have to sit out the first half of the SC game.

    MrSEC had a good post on the subject this morning (left over from yesterday.).

      Or, if Clowney decapitates someone in the first game, then he sits for part of ours. However, the Piss Wagers effect will GET US.

    They are quickly turning college football officials into MLB umpires. Different strike zones and all that. I could see some crews not want to suffer the immense scorn of the fans, so they choose to just not call any targeting while others (like Wagers) who thrive on the “fame” of the position take it upon themselves to play God with the game on the field (a la Angel Hernandez).

    The only way I can see for UGA to survive this is to go undefeated. Everyone knows if an SEC team is undefeated and ranked highly with an apparent track to the BCS game, the officials will protect the SEC’s investment. See Arkansas/Florida or UGA/LSU from a couple of years ago.

      This.^^ If we win the Clemson game and are inside the top 5 for the USCe game, then win it without mishap, the 2008 and 2009 dream scenario for the SEC front office presents itself, i.e. the possibility of an undefeated SEC East Champion playing an undefeated SEC West Champion in the SECCG. After that Slive will see to it that both Bama and UGA get the benefit of all discretionary calls. If Wagers tries any shenanigans he will run the risk of being canned–and he knows it.

    This is going to produce a meltdown at some point. Imagine Clowney getting tossed for a Michigan-style hit at a home game in a close one against an opponent like UF? The fans will tear the place down. I wonder how many officials would have the balls to make that call.

    Not if, but when. And I don’t think it will take long before someone is in an uproar over a questionable ejection in the first couple weeks. I just hope its not us 😉
