Back in the day

Fun six-minute clip of some mid-90’s Dawg action:

Make sure you catch Tanneyhill’s reaction at 0:42, Hines Ward’s patented toughness at 2:50 and most of all, Robert Edwards’ incredible touchdown run at the 1:08 mark.

Edwards had a memorable career at Georgia, but I can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if he hadn’t suffered that horrendous injury against Tennessee.

That 1995 game between Georgia and South Carolina was the first game that I saw and attended as a law student at Georgia. Robert Edwards was incredible in that game. Then, that heartbreaking loss the next week to Tennessee…wow, those are some *bad* memories with that game.

I’ll never forget Edwards and Ward in the 97 WLOCP game. What an effort, what a memory!

I forgot how excited I was about Torin Kirtsey in ’95, and like that [finger snap], he was gone.

Edwards injury against UT wasn’t nearly as gruesome as what ended his NFL career but i believe it did change the course of our program as we were about to run away with that game and who knows where that would have taken us.

Not to mention the Bobo injury as well. Even UT fans after the game were telling us we would’ve won had Edwards not been injured. It’s likely that our only losses that year would’ve been to Bama & Florida had Edwards & Bobo not been hurt. Those 2 injuries changed the course of UGA football, as Goff would’ve kept his job and probably stuck around a few more years at least.

Is that in regards to the game, season, or Donnan’s career? I’ve wondered about all three. I don’t think there is much doubt about the game, but it isn’t hard to imagine the other two playing out differently if Edwards stayed 100% that year. Until Knowshon came along, I felt like Edwards was our last tailback that could take it to the house any time he touched it.

But that was Goff’s last season. If Georgia had won that game and had a big year behind Edwards and Bobo, there probably wouldn’t have been a Donnan era.

Exactly. Good catch. My main point was that the health of a special player will turn someone into a genius.

What game is that around the 3:20 mark? I see an NFL logo in the end zone and can’t identify the opposing helmet.

That was the Clemson game. They wore horrible throwback uniforms. The Carolina Panthers were playing their home games at Clemson while their stadium was being built in Charlotte.

It’s the Clemson game in 1995. What threw me off initially was the NFL logo; it’s the Carolina Panthers logo. They played their first season at Clemson. Clemson wore throwback unis for that game; that also confused me.

  7. After watching last year’s game, it’s weird to see UT with players in the secondary who can catch our running backs.

Edwards went down. Bobo went down. Goff went down. The end.

That was Clemson in the ugly purple and orange with Carolina Panthers painted in the end zone. The Panthers played there for a season. Munson said on the radio “those uniforms wreak!” Kirtsey ran wild.

What on earth happened to Torin Kirtsey?

If memory serves me correctly, he only played one year. Had academic issues or fell in love with some girl named Mary Jane; but I think it was the former. I also want to think he was from J’ville, close to my home place.

Back in the day goes back a little further, but I can not get by three games in the Dome. All losses. I have been troubled how LSU and Bama just pounded our D line with blocking and running backs in the third quarter. How the D could not stop them and put the O on the field. Then Boise. I am interested in how Connelly plays right out of the gate. When you watch the SECCG he struggled even though he was on the field at critical plays and times. Now of those went the way he wanted them. I would like to see him be a guy on a mission to make a statement in the SEC…you can not cover one on one or two’s.

Great post. I spent the weekend with a guy that played on those teams and he had two great anecdotes:
    (1) When Bobo and Kirby told him that they planned on going into coaching, he said something like “Are you crazy, coaches don’t make anything”. Which was true for positional coaches and (comparatively) even the HC back then. Obviously, Bobo & Smart are getting paid pretty well now

    (2) He said a group of players (mostly lineman) went to some farm in Oconee to shoot clay pigeons one time and one of the receivers (this could apply to most of them) came out with a 9mm and was firing off rounds too. Makes for a funny scene with the country boys and the city boys.

If Bobo, Edwards, and Godfrey aren’t hurt that year we probably go 9-2 at worst. We had a MONSTER home schedule that year. South Carolina, Bama, Florida and Auburn all at home.

Sanford was crazy when the Gators came to town. Can you imagine if we’d had a full deck of cards and our lone loss to Bama and they were undefeated? We’d have killed UT if Robert doesn’t go down and Ole Miss wouldn’t have been a loss. What if we’d beaten Bama? and we were both undefeated.

Goff would have certainly kept his job and we’d have been decent in ’96 as well and maybe even better in ’97. A couple of freak plays and your career is over. That’s the life of a coach.

Dallas Long? Did Dallas Lee and Austin Long become one dude?? LOL.

Austin Long is rumored to be ineligible. No word yet. Dallas Lee has no issues that I’m aware of.

Hey! I just hear’em. I gotta put’em together as well? When you’re my age being half-correct is a blessing.

Thanks Dawg93. By the way, did you see the article about Jadaveon Lattimore?
