Make way, make way… Tennessee recruitin’ is back, y’all!
Jones arrived from Cincinnati without anything close to a national championship on his resume. He was best known as the guy who followed Brian Kelly.
He was a Michigander with no Tennessee or even SEC connections. But he has sold Tennessee as though he were a direct descendant of Davy Crockett.
Granted, commitments don’t equate to signees. National Signing Day is months away, and there’s a daunting 2013 season in between. But if Jones and his staff were capable of convincing so many sought-after recruits to commit, they’re capable of holding on to most of them.
Assuming they want to hold on to them, that is.
Just remember, it’s the kids changing their minds and decommitting who are the real scourge of college recruiting these days.
Just recruit the Chad Scott way. It’s much easier

I know its early but it seems odd that the two worse teams in the east are leading the recruiting battle. I don’t know if Jones can coach in the SEC but he hasn’t done bad job of pulling in some 4 stars.

Don’t put as much stock in the Star ratings as others, particularly the cumulative team ratings since they may not address areas of need, but if those top athletes are still being courted by others I expect a falloff before Signing Day. I don’t see how TN can fail to get embarrassed in a few games this year and that will lead to the empty seats again. This program is at a crucial point, imo, and they need momentum immediately.

That’s because he’s Mr. Commitment:
“But here’s the thing about Lyle Jones. Here’s why his departure makes Brian Kelly’s exit three years earlier look gracious, and why Jones has made cynics of more people in one day than Kelly or Mark Dantonio did in six years:
He pretended to be committed to Cincinnati.”

UT is an attactive sell right now. Tradition, facilities, support, playing time with little to no competition. Will see if this continues though.

Butch Jones=Brian Kelly’s sloppy seconds.
I agree with ETennDawg, right now there is a traditional power with a rabid fan base, great facilities, and tons of playing time available in the SEC. That is attractive for a lot of these kids who don’t want to come to Alabama or Georgia or LSU and have to actually compete for a job. Most of these kids see it as “go to UT, start as a Freshman, throw up some good numbers, leave after 3 years to get drafted”.
Or they are just straight up paying people…..

Personally, I would not read too much into this. this tale has been told a million times of a kid being left out for one reason or another. the reality is that it won’t impact the rest of UT’s recruiting.
More broadly, in the short term, there is the predictable bump that a program gets from the burst of energy from a new staff, but it is unlikely they are able to fully address all their weaknesses in one ore two recruiting classes, the SEC is a tough place for incomplete football teams.
I really have no idea how Jones will turn out as a coach. Its hard to contexualize a coach has two 3 year stints following the same coach where the “heavy lifting” had been done. Urban Meyer is perhaps the classic case of an “overnight” success in 6 years from Bowling Green to a national title at UF, but again, the level of success he had had at Both Bowling green and Utah was unprecedented at both places. further, he and mullen could legitimately claim to having developed a proprietary version of the spread option.
Jones has not done either of those things….that does not mean he can’t or won’t succeed, but it simply means he is like any other hire in that it will take time to know whether or not he can build a winning program in the most competitive conference in college football.
