Tuesday morning buffet

Have at it, guys.

  • Scarbinsky mocks Nick Saban’s concern about football becoming a “continuous game”.
  • Arthur Lynch be preppin’ for the NFL.  It’s always interesting when players find new motivation (read:  $$) to take better care of their bodies than they did in college.
  • Dan Jenkins has a memoir coming out today.  That should be a semi-great read.
  • Ed Aschoff says Jeff Driskel, who’s important enough to the Florida program that Boom pushed back the spring practice schedule to accommodate his recovery, “has every reason to be bitter”.  Hmm.
  • CFN‘s “unsolicited advice” to Georgia for spring practice is to work on turnover margin.  Dang, I bet Mark Richt wishes he’d have thought of that.
  • Miami joins the ranks of programs hiring high-profile high school coaches in an advisory position.
  • Weiszer notes a comment made by a 2015 Georgia commit:  “They’re switching to a 4-3 defense and I think that will give me an opportunity to come in and play as a true defensive end…”  Jeremy Pruitt, all things to all men.

      I’ve often times wondered the same. I mean you can practice stripping the ball carrier, but especially with interceptions, not sure how you practice making more interceptions. Those are typically more the result of pressure on the QB, the QB just making a mistake, and/or being in the right place at the time. Rarely are interceptions just a phenomenal individual effort by the guy who gets the pick.

      Gee, and I was led to believe by our fearless leader that turnovers (at least fumble recoveries) were just random–some years you get ’em and other years you don’t–return to the mean stuff. I guess Georgia can practice what it’s like being in the “turnover-get” years. 🙂

    I’m up in Greenville SC and once a week the sportstalk station up here interviews one of the guys from TheBigSpur.com (gamecock’s 247sports site). The week after Rivers flipped, he reported the same thing, that Pruitt had told Rivers we are switching to a 4-3. I thought maybe the report was wrong since Pruitt said when he was hired that we would be multiple, but our base would still be a 3-4, but we would be running a lot of 4 man fronts. But sounds like this is at least what Rivers believes he was told.

    Probably not a big deal, but if the Rivers kid did misinterpret what Pruitt’s plans are, hopefully we have reached out and cleared that up already. Would hate for that to come back and bite us down the road.

      I dont think this 4-3 business is new news. It’s been covered here before that we will run 3 or 4 man fronts depending on the offense lined up across the LOS. I think it was mentioned that we were in 4 man fronts more than 50% of the time last year and that will continue under Pruitt.

      It makes for a good recruiting pitch: if the guy wants to be a 4-3 end you tell him we’re a 4-3, if he wants to be a 3-4 OLB you tell him we’re a 3-4 🙂

      I think being “multiple” allows us, and recruits, to say/hear what they want. We were lined up more often in a four man front than a three under Grantham anyway. My feeling is this recruit’s switch was more to me with this defensive staff and at UGA. I get was excited about Pruitt but Rocker and Ekeler have certainly added to my level of confidence.
