Musical palate cleanser, loved you in Die Hard: With a Vengeance edition

Sam Phillips’ “I Need Love”, from her album Martinis and Bikinis, popped up on my iPod this weekend and I cannot get the chorus out of my head.  Maybe it’ll earworm its way into yours.  Here’s a great live version she performed with her then-husband, T Bone Burnett:

And, yes, she is one and the same as this:

Kind of ironic they cast her as a mute in the movie.

Senator, do you get the sort of a sense of a female Marshall Crenshaw from Sam Phillips? Particularly from other songs on the Martinis and Bikinis album? Baby I Can’t Please You & Same Changes, in particular. Plus, I can’t believe that was 20 years ago.

    • They certainly till in the same fields. But for my money, I sense much more Beatles in her music. It’s not so apparent from the live clip, but if you listen to the album version of “I Need Love”…

… that guitar break in the middle of the song and at the end is straight out of “If I Needed Someone” (which is pretty neat if you think about the lyrical themes to each song).
