First practice day roundup

Here’s the perspective from the usual suspects:

Obviously, given the ridiculously small sample size, I don’t want to go overboard with the tea leaf-reading, but still, I can’t completely help myself.

  • The early leader in the stud clubhouse has to be Lorenzo Carter.  The sooner he figures out what he’s doing out there, the sooner he’ll see the field.  And with the two-game suspension to Bellamy, that could be real soon.
  • Ray Drew running with the threes – I’m not sure if that says more about Drew or about the depth on the defensive line.  Sure hope it’s the latter, though.
  • It sounds like Pruitt likes what he sees in Shattle Fenteng.  It would be nice to see Georgia buck a trend with JUCO defensive transfers who’ve come in with high expectations and failed to deliver on them.
  • The situation behind Mason still makes me nervous.  Stay healthy, Hutson.
  • As disappointing as Scott-Wesley’s health situation seems, Keith Marshall’s is grounds for legitimate optimism.

What do you guys glean from all this?

Trying to look on the positive side:

A heathly Keith Marshall is music to my ears. There wasn’t much, if any, time last year when he and Gurley were both healthy last year. I believe Bobo was going to put them on the field at the same time and maybe let Keith slide out to WR on a few plays. Here’s to believing…

I really want to see ‘Zo Carter in the games. Would love to see him terrorizing opposing QBs.

Hope we can build some leads this year and get our backup QBs some substantial game experience.

RB’s are going to smoke some people. Bellamy will have to work or he will see the field from the bus this year.

I don’t make much of it yet. When it gets close to scrimmage time, we’ll see where he is.

It sounds like Pruitt likes what he sees in Shattle Fenteng.

We’re finally getting some length at CB, with Davis and Fenteng. And several other new guys have outstanding length. It’s been talked about for 5 or 6 years, but has never happened, with an exception or two, like Commings.

It would. It’s all about eval, and then coaching them up. I expect to see a difference. I suspect Shattle is a guy Pruitt wanted.

I guess we’ll be on edge all year. Every time Hutson gets hit, every time he carries the ball on the read-option. Yeah. And of course, every time he gets speared in the head.

As disappointing as Scott-Wesley’s health situation seems, Keith Marshall’s is grounds for legitimate optimism.

Yeah, I suspect we can think of JSW as hopefully being ready for the second half of the schedule, perhaps around the Florida game. We have to hope he is busting his tail in every way, as there’s a good chance we’ll need him then.

Well, I hope it will. The thing that bothers me about Carter is he was less than impressive in his last HS game, the state championship. Lots of loafing and not very much effort. Not impressive at all. He looked very much like an entitled player.

But this is not Willie Martinez nor Todd Grantham’s standards we’re operating under now. I have to believe Pruitt will demand everything Carter’s got, and these things will never be allowed to even become an issue for him.

Watching Aub/GA replay….Drew deserves to be with 3’s. Clueless & slow.

      • Yeah, I have to admit. It’s been disappointing from the get-go, really.

I wouldn’t throw dirt on him yet, he was slow to develop but had his moments last season. Much of the disappointment with him is directly tied to the recruiting services having him ranked so high. We all know how hard is to project a 17-18 year old’s development over the next 5 years in their first time away from home so we should know better than to put too much stock into the “star rating” system. It is a fair barometer of potential but you have to allow for big misses in both directions.

I think his being listed 3rd is simply a strong message being sent that players will go all out or someone who wants to play with passion will take your place. We have enough DL talent to enforce that philosophy. Drew will make key plays for us this year and will be in the rotation.

          • I expect him to be, and don’t make too much out of his being third string right now, as I told Bluto. We’ll see where he is when we start scrimmaging, and go from there.

I don’t care about stars, and when it comes to prospects have always gone by what little film I can find. Over the years, it’s been a much more accurate indicator. Very accurate, in fact. Drew’s film was OK, good I would say, but nothing elite.

I remember how Grantham kept talking him up as an OLB, and started him off there. I also remember saying how ridiculous that idea was, as Drew was far too slow and sluggish for that position. His HS highlight film showed that much.

He’s in the right position now, of course. Nevertheless, his career has been a disappointment up to this point, IMO. He did get much better last year, and has a great chance, I believe, to reach his potential this year.

I hope so, and am pulling for him. But if he can’t do it under Rocker and Pruitt, then he just can’t do it.

Mac – damn good point. Overrated and over expectations I guess. I wish him well and want him (Drew) to succeed.
