Into the belly of the chicken

I’m getting ready to head out to Columbia, rain gear in tow.  It’s my first trip there since 1988, which may still rank as the hottest football game I’ve ever attended.

I’m hoping that “Sandstorm” doesn’t get burned into my brain.

Consider this your invite to a game day thread in the comments section.

Clemson 2003 was the hottest game I’ve ever been to. Miserably humid and they ran out of bottled water by halftime.

Anyone remember UGA/SC ’86 when our QB (Jefferson?)put the ball down in a close one thinking that time expired at the end of the 4th? SC fell on the ball on our 20 and thought they had one play for the win. Refs huddled for a bit, then said time did expire. Fans got UGLY. I remember beer bottles flying. Hope they’re just as happy today.

  6. Left the house around 5, been here since around 8. USC is a road game we rarely miss since we usually always have a good time. Can’t say the same of Knoxville. Probably should have bought a new Georgia canopy before this game with the threat of weather. Mine has seen over a decade of games, concerts and camping. Even survived a nasty storm at Miss State but she’s definitely showing here age. I doubt she’ll survive heavy rain or winds.

Love the fake juice SC had coming onto the field again and now have to leave again. It’s a rally killer, I sez. They are using up their energy in a rabid frenzy, blocking each other blind ,jumpin’ up and down screamin’. They had the kamikazi on for the early part of the game and now the lightning has dampened their spirits again.

What’s the over and under for them coming out with that energy again?

Meanwhile, the Dawgs patiently go thru warmup and glance balefully at the jacking up antics that SC needs to compete. Until now, I didn’t know how nervous SC was about this game. Think I’ve just been given a clue.

I don’t understand people who excuse the defense for not making plays the rest of the game. Yes, they made a huge play, and it should have allowed Georgia to win. Bobo should have handed the ball to Gurley. The defense was still terrible and had more to do with the loss than the offense.

        • Biggus Dickus

Bobo is a moron. After all the mistakes we had to suffer though where he lost game after game in 2009, 2010, 2011 during his OJT you would think he would have learned by now. But he still hasn’t learned. First and goal from the 4 with the best back in the nation on your team. Give the ball to Gurley!!! 4 straight times if you have to!! But to try a passing play on first down and lose 11 yards? The single stupidest offensive call in Georgia football history. Bobo deserves the Georgia defense. A match made in heaven.

Dude, calm down. Georgia Scored 34 points on the road and lost. The Defense is what lost this game, not that call. I agree that we should have ran Gurley 4 times. However, all game long the D has been chasing any hint of Gurley getting the ball. The announcers even mentioned they never felt Mason was going to have that ball on the back side and were not respecting it. However, the one time they do it leads to the grounding call. If that play works, he looks like a genius, it just did not.

One play does not a game make. 2nd and 24 and a wide open SCar WR, to me that play epitomizes this loss.

Actually, he was trying to throw it at the running back’s feet, and it kicked off the South Carolina player’s leg. It was a blown call, one of many the refs botched against both sides. I can’t believe that crew is one of the top two in the conference.

The grounding call was bogus, Bro. Mason threw the ball at the feet of Quaavon and the refs blew it by calling grounding. But that still doesn’t change the fact that to call a pass of any kind in that situation was a bonehead move. So many bad things could have happened doing that like an interception, a tipped ball with an interception, a sack, a holding penalty (real or imagined with the shitty crew calling the game) etc. Just hand the ball to Gurley. He never fumbles and he gets 7 yards a carry. But nooooooo.

It’s nice that everyone got to contribute to this loss. The defense sucks. Bobo still tries to be too clever at times (though I’m probably as surprised as he is that anyone stayed home on that play). Morgan decides to miss his first two field goals in a year on a night when two more field goals would have won. Georgia football is perpetually a dollar short. If I believed in some sort of cosmic balance to all things, I’d say Georgia used up every bit of luck they would ever have in 1980.

Here’s an idea. Let’s take 2 weeks to devise a gameplan that DOESN’T take advantage of scu’s weaknesses. Give their QB a giant cushion. Run into a 7+ man box. Don’t hurry up. Act like a game clock doesn’t exist. Totally ignore the success a&m and ECU had against our opponent. And don’t attribute the loss to the half ass genius.

  86. Cosmic Dawg

I’m amazed at how many homers here think the refs should only throw flags at the other team, they’re always out to get us, etc, etc. Do you know how idiotic that sounds when South Carolina was getting penalized left and right at critical points of the game, often on pretty minor calls? The only bad call I saw against UGA was the holding call, but South Carolina had its share of petty calls against it, plus the unsportsmanlike that probably should have gone against us.

It sucks to lose, but if these guys were a shade flat at first, they still appeared to play hard for four quarters in a place we typically have trouble with. If you can’t watch your team lose a game without all the wah wah wah and dissing somebody like Mason (who stayed because he loves the college and had a damn strong stat line tonight) or Pruitt (coaching his second game with inherited players) or Morgan (who has won a lot of games for us and who threw himself in front of a return man and who did indeed “kick them into the end zone” all night) then you need to find another hobby because football ain’t your sport.

See my comment above…you go ahead and expect whatever you want. I felt like our guys played pretty hard and imo many of them appear to be playing above their natural talent level this year in most positions, which has not always been the case. Bobo screwed up once, and it was a bad one, but he’s still one of the best in the country. I still prefer CJP’s defense to CTG”s after two games. The kids played hard and lost. Tip your cap to them, crack a beer, and consider that it’s still just football.
