“If we were throwing it, they’d be saying run it more.”

Mike Bobo has a point.  (See what I did there?)

I would settle for a well thrown ball, on-time to the receiver to pick up a 3rd and 12 once in a while. After that, feel free to run more #3 on 1st and 10.

I think that’s the right thought Rp. We’ll have to convert some 3rd and 12s to beat Auburn. Frankly, what we’re doing right now is probably enough to beat everyone else as long as we don’t turn the ball over. Gurley is THAT good.

But Bobo is dead on in many ways. Fans want to complain. If Hutson was throwing for 250 a game and throwing it 25 times and Gurley was only getting 16-17 touches, everyone would be complaining about that, even if we were still scoring the same amount of points. There’s only so many plays. We’ve chosen to ride the horse we have. Richt is right that the moment of truth on offense will determine if we think Hutson is a success.

David Greene played a bunch of really ugly games (even in 2002). But, when the moment of truth arrived in Knoxville in 2001, Bama in 2002, Auburn in 2002, Clemson in 2003, South Carolina in 2004…David delivered. In big games against big-time opponents, David delivered, and he’s revered for it. But, I remember being down 2-0 at halftime in Nashville in 2003 to a crappy Vandy team and our offense looked like a middle school offense in the first half. I also remember that DJ won the 2002 Clemson game for us and Pollack won the 2002 South Carolina game for us as David got off to a very slow start that year. That will be Hutson’s legacy. Can he do it when the chips are down.

AJ McCarron was a little better than average QB, but in 2012 in Baton Rouge he made the pass he had to make to win it and made the pass to Cooper in the Dome he had to make to beat us. Hutson is every bit as capable as McCarron if he has inside of him IT.

Or just a change up when we have been throwing nothing but fastballs, so to speak. If we can get anything going with the passing game to make the defense drop just a little bit and respect that threat, look out. You think Gurley was a force before?

I don’t think the defense will ever drop just a little bit because regardless of how well Hutson is doing Gurley is still that much bigger of a threat. Opponents will make him beat us that way over and over again. I just hope he is capable

You mean like run play action on first and goal from the four when everyone knows we’re going to run Gurley?

For the record, I’m fine with that call. The execution, not so much.

Never have been a fan of critics who question a specific play call, that is rarely appropriate, including the 2012 SECCG and the SC intentional grounding play, but the mix of calls and use of personnel seems fair game for discussion. Hard to criticize Bobo’s offense much at all because the body of work has been so impressive for years, but we do seem to get into “ruts” occasionally.

It is almost like we flip a switch and go all ground game, or passing for a series, and then abandon it, almost like we just aren’t in that section of the playbook any longer. (I exclude the obvious times when running or passing exclusively are dictated by game circumstances like running the 2 minute drill, or trying to run the clock down.) Or bring Michel/Chubb in at RB and stay with that package the whole drive without regard to the down and distance situation with Gurley on the sideline. Same is true with TG, we will run him 5 consecutive plays or until he takes himself out. Why not assume he needs a breather after 3 straight runs where one of them was for 20+ yards, then send him back in.

Again, our offense has been the strength of the team for years so criticizing it at all may seem unfair but with our defensive weaknesses it has to be almost perfect in some games. I applaud what has been accomplished offensively but as Larry pleaded, “hunker down one more time you guys” because we need everyone to step it up from here on out. Perfect would be nice!

“But I’m sure there is going to be another moment of truth whether the score is 10-7 or 40-42. Somewhere along the way we’ll probably need to drive the ball and get points on the last drive of the game to win.”

More than that, at some point we’re going to have to come from behind. As any casual fan knows, you have to pass the ball in those situations. The discontent isn’t over the wins, its over the USC loss (which is inexcusable in light of how bad they’ve proven to be) and the probable losses in the next couple months. Anybody think we’re gonna beat Auburn playing the way we have?

I think AU will be difficult, but it is really hard to blame Bobo and Mason for something that hasn’t happened yet.

Enjoy it one week at a time.

I’m not blaming Bobo. But Ramsey has got to start seeing an increased role in the offense. If he’s not getting 50% of the snaps before the Auburn game, I don’t think we can win. If we can get Ramsey ready to play by mid season, I think we have a shot to win it all.

Because Ramsey has shown the ability to come from behind and win those big games right? Like when we were down 20-0 to Tech last year? Oh wait that would be our CURRENT QB Hutson Mason. How about we wait and until we are in that position and see how he responds until we pass judgement and anoint a RFr who came from the Wing T in HS the savior of our program.

With this defense and questionable WR play we aren’t “winning it all” if Matthew Stafford came back for his last year of eligibility.

If we aren’t going to win and that’s your attitude then there’s no reason not to play Ramsey and get him ready for next year anyway.

I didn’t say we weren’t going to win, we have as good of a chance as anyone to win the East. Once you get to the Dome anything can happen. We aren’t making the MNC Playoff because we’ll have another loss or two. We shouldn’t just give up on our team and plan for next year because we lost by 3 on the road to the Chickens.

Just keep in mind everyone said the same thing about Mason when Murray was playing, well except his Sr . yr. The most beloved player on the roster is often times the Back-up QB but there are reasons why they are the back up, most of the time. Not an endorsement of Mason just a, hopefully, friendly reminder.

No , not everyone. Only the idiots. This is not even close to the same deal. Murray was an SEC record setter. Mason is a gap filler. He always was. He’s the Joe T between Shockley and Stafford. The Joe Cox between Stafford and Murray. The Hutson Mason between Murray and Ramsey.

So one of your keys to winning the Auburn game is increasing Ramsey’s snaps (hopefully to 50/50) or his role in the offense in the 4 games prior to them? Please.

Can we give Richt/Bobo the benefit of doubt that they’re playing the QB who gives us the best chance to win? They’ve proven to be the best college QB-developing tandem over the last several years. Maybe in their eyes a QB who – facts here – has a better grasp of the offense and what opposing Ds are doing scheme-wise to defend us is a better option than a QB who has a better arm and “looks more quarterback-y”.

This is a terrible excuse. Teams these days get their calls from the sidelines anyway. If Masons best strength is reading defenses, but he can’t do anything to exploit them, then give him a clipboard and let him help get the right call in from the sideline. He’s hampering our offense, not helping it. Why do you think Ramsey played in the last game? The coaches know this and they’re going to try harder to get Ramsey ready quickly.

    Let it rip. Passing game.
Rushing offense. We will see against Tigers and Hogs. They have the opportunity to show case it on the road against 2 SEC teams. Could not beat South Carolina on the road, but Missouri could. Missouri took control of the game in the 4th quarter against Carolina. Will find out who has the better offense…Dawgs, Tigers, or Hogs. Against Arkansas they have the opportunity to post who has the better rushing attack.
Stats are one thing, but taking advantage of opportunities on the road is another. Hopefully, no 1st and goal from the 4th with no points after a depleted defense put them in a position to take the lead and the clock on their side.
We all wait to see what Bobo dials up in these 2 games…for sure Gurley factors in big time, but will anyone else rise up…a Mason with a crisp, efficient and productive passing game to help out Gurley.
