One of my best friends traveled to the Belk Bowl. He called me at halftime, because he felt he had to let me know that he was seated next to somebody who spent the entire first half… railing at Mike Bobo.
On the one hand, you have to admire the dedication there. After all, why let Bobo’s absence spoil a good rant?
Maybe feel a little sorry for the dude, too. I mean, after all, here’s someone who spent some money and time going to a bowl game, made plans in advance, was obviously raring to go, only to have his preparation messed up less than a week before the game by a selfish decision on Bobo’s part to take a head coaching gig.
The nerve of some people, you know?

…But I can understand some feeling of animosity toward Bobo leaving without finishing out the bowl game. I know, it was under the guise of him not being 100% committed to the Belk bowl because he would have fleeting thoughts of his new head coaching gig which could affect his play calling abilities. Hmm.. For someone who has been the player caller for UGA for as long as he has, that excuse sounds a little like someone stepped in B.S. to me.
If UGA had lost the game last night I think the blame would have really been more focused on Bobo – Accurately or not…

I am glad he stayed in Colorado. I like Bobo a lot; think he was an outstanding OC. However, I recall January 2001 when Richt tried to juggle both his last game as FSU OC and his new responsibilities as HC. FSU suffered because he was not able to totally focus on that job. Richt admitted he should not have tried to do one last game for FSU. I will bet Richt remembered that and advised Bobo accordingly.

LSU’s Chavis is a more recent case. That Tiger defense wasn’t the one who held Bama to 13 in regulation, they were pushed all over the field by a desperate ND team.

And if he had stayed on for the bowl and we had lost Bobo would have been blamed. He did the right thing by leaving. The guy simply could not win with many in our fanbase no matter what.

No, you have it backwards. He would be 100% committed to his new job–his current employer that nearly tripled his salary and on which his future career ambitions hang. He would have fleeting thoughts of the people he’d worked with over the past many years that he truly cared about but ultimately chose to move on from given the opportunity for himself. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Most any time you change jobs your loyalty shifts to the new employer.
Given that Bobo wants to be a head coach, leaving was the right thing to do. Maybe just maybe if the stakes were higher (e.g., a championship game, ala Richt in 2000) that would justify sticking it out, but I’m not sure that’s a good idea even then (ala RIcht in 2000).

I have a guy at work that swears he can call every play that Bobo is going to call. And I told him you need to ring up some teams, because professional coaches have a hard time stopping him. But really they are not actually calling the play. They probably say run, but they do not know if it was checked into. Or they say deep pass, but there are usually more than 1 route and it is the QB that determines where the ball should go.

“Our group was calling the plays before the snap” has been a common Internet claim, to which I always called baloney. Those folks forget the 20 they guessed wrong. They remember the one they guessed correctly, and those usually are self evident things such as run between the tackles on third and a foot.

I don’t claim to call every (or any) play, but when I see runs from a power set into the teeth of a nine-man front go for nothing, I do suggest to my television that we spread them out and make them defend in space. When they finally do, I am just awed that my television has a direct connection with the coaches’ boxes in every stadium across the country. It is truly a miracle of modern technology.
But, it is also a pretty common coaching theory at this point to make a defense defend the entire field… so I’ve got that going for me.

I have to give credit to my wife for correctly calling UL’s fake punt. I was in the middle of explaining to her field position and why they wouldn’t do such a thing when the punter missed a wide open first down. Maybe she should be the coach?

Lost amidst the praise for our running game and opportunistic D was this reminder that ST continues to have SERIOUS quality control issues. One more reason CMR has no business getting back into the OC or QB coach biz is that ST and game management still need a lot of work. Aside from select recruiting visits, what else does CMR have to do in-season if he wants to win titles? Didn’t McGarrity lead off his tenure with the what-can-I-take-off-your-plate-for-you-to-succeed conversation? Granted shelling out competitive staff salaries (coaches and S&C) and moving in a more timely fashion on the IPF haven’t been as much a priority for the AD as have administrative streamlining.

That is classic of the idiot wing of our fan base. Bobo did the right thing and tweeted his congrats to the team last night. Lilly did a good job as a stand-in. A guy in his 1st game calling plays schooled a guy who has been an NFL coordinator and had one of the best statistical defenses in the country until last night. Way to go, Coach Lilly!

Easy to call plays with Chubb in the backfield. Michel and Douglas were not nearly as impressive. I’ll be honest, I’ve had huge question marks about our supposedly “Stellar” O-Line all year. Against on-talent-level competition, they sure looked great with Chubb and Gurley running … but when the other backs came in, they weren’t nearly as dominant. Gotta wonder how much of that was due to the superior skill set of the ball carriers.

Agreed. OL has gotten on a roll at times this year and opened holes whereby the back didn’t have to break tackles at the LOS. But 2nd halves of UF and Tech games showed OL getting repeatedly blown up – Tech more troubling given how poor they’d been to that point of the season against the run. Maybe returning experience and some athletic underclassmen on the OL coupled with a new S&C regimen will raise the run blocking bar. Some will find this assessment curious given the high level of rushing yards and TDs in 2014, but a close look at how we ran the ball in our losses and how little success we had running Douglas, Chubb and Marshall hints at a dependency on freakish tackle breaking of 27 and 3. Awesome to have their talents but they mask our inconsistency in making holes when Ds are loaded in the box. Vertical passing threat would make run blocking easier as well.

What can we say. One thanks Will Friend for finishing the drill….the Bama connection. Second CMR did have a plan…remaining staff and players came to play. Sure ex-coaches Bono and Grantam took note of that.

Section 305, probably around row 10. There is a lady 5 rows above my seat that blames Bobo and Aaron Murray for anything and everything. This has been going on for years now. Her hubby/boyfriend keeps egging her drunk mouth on. She is a certified box of rocks with lips and is as screwed up as a soup sandwich. Maybe we will get some reprieve this year, although the new guy can expect to be blistered by game 2.

Let me start by saying I think Bobo was a very good OC the last 3-4 years. How good, exactly I would struggle to put a number on…somewhere in the top 25% in FBS.
But the prevalent tone in this thread and many others lately is to Saint Bobo and deride any criticism of him as the ramblings of a lunatic fringe, or uninformed dolts.
The fact is, none of us know just how good Bobo really is; we just have a general idea that is widely accepted and now the masses are shouting down any dissent which is unhealthy.
Let’s see what he can accomplish at CSU, with a different talent base, etc. Even then we won’t have a true comparison because he stepped up to the Head Coach job. But, he won’t have Richt, Murray, Gurley, Chubb, etc to lean on there and we’ll have another set of data.
Who knows what Tom Herman, Doug Meacham, etc. could have done with all the talent we have? No one. And no one knows exactly how good Bobo is.
So can we stop squelching all criticism and have a balanced discussion here?
[Yeah, I know that’s crazy talk for a fan forum. But for the most part I think people are actually reasonable here…it’s just any criticism Bobo is sacrilege.]

I agree that there’s no need to “squelch[] all criticism” for Bobo’s job performance over the last several years. I disagree that we should not shout down idiots who might still blame Bobo for whatever ails our program. I have good friends who in the middle of last and this seasons would say, “I think Bobo should be fired.” And I told these good friends they were idiots.

This. If you want to gripe about a few individual play calls per game, I’m okay with that. Hell, I do it myself. But to say we don’t really know how good Bobo was? Nah, bruh. Setting school records for scoring and leading the SEC in scoring with players you had a major hand in recruiting says that you were damn good. The only reason some are reluctant to give him his due is that we saw him grow into the position over the last few years, and some of those years made for some hair-pulling and teeth-gnashing.

Bobo’s offenses didn’t set school records with Stafford, Moreno and Green. But then he got better.
Relying solely on stats is informative, but miss-leading. Especially if you don’t use advanced metrics. A lot of advanced metrics support that the offense was great. But this era of high-scoring football makes past records meaningless.
And you have to factor in the talent level he had to work with (yes Bobo gets credit for the talent level being so high). How many teams in the SEC had more talent on offense than UGA this year?

Who developed Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray from gunslinging freshmen to NFL QBs? Mike Bobo and Mark Richt.
Who did the game planning and the play calling that led to Georgia leading the conference in scoring and in scoring in conference games? Mike Bobo.
The guy did a damn good job over the last 10 years instead of Dawgrading his performance.

A10, I read your posts as if any Tom, Dick or Harry from off the street could do what Bobo did over the last 5 or 6 years. If you didn’t mean that, I read it wrong. My point was that Bobo is a big reason why our offense has been so potent and powerful since 2007. I hope whoever replaces him can keep up what is now a given – Georgia has an offense that can score on anyone if it doesn’t shoot itself in the foot.

You’re trying to hard to read between the lines, then. I think there is ONE play this year I could have called better than Bobo, and one better than Richt. Richt agreed with me on his bad call during a press conference, and I bet most would agree they could do better than Bobo’s worst call of the season. Only those with Bobo Sainthood Syndrome would disagree.
