Nothing personal? Of course it was personal.

If you had any doubt that Mark Richt wanted to send a message to his former defensive coordinator last night, that should have been completely erased at the 4:18 mark in the fourth quarter, when Georgia inserted Nick Chubb back into a 30-14 game.  Two minutes later, Chubb blasted into the end zone with the final score of the game, and left Todd Grantham with quite the legacy from the bowl game.

Grantham now has the honor of coaching the defense that allowed Chubb’s single-game rushing total to become the second highest in school history.  Chubb set a new Belk Bowl rushing record.  And Chubb’s season rushing total has only been bettered by one other Georgia back, Herschel Walker.

Not too shabby.

Throw in a touch of this…

… and I think you could say Georgia touched all the bases.  Sweet.

Hate it for Mason and Bennett, not being able to finish their last game in Red and Black. Still, for me that is by far the most enjoyable game this season. Watching Penetrino and the Choke Artist twist in the wind was the perfect way to end the year…

    • Excellent point about Petrino – I thought the last TD as much for him as it was for Grantham. I imagine Falcon fans who aren’t UGA fans enjoyed watching Evel Knievel have his pants pulled down by the Dawgs last night.

      Mason & Bennett = DGDs

Yep. Mickey Mouse was too much for Donald Duck (Petrino) and Goofy.

  2. Grantham actually said that? Are you shitting me? Grantham had one year with a dominant defense and one with a decent defense. The other two he coached dogshit defenses, and he’s bagging on the offense? The same one that has lit up the scoreboard for 3 years now? I was wrong; he is as asshole.

I’m no X’s and O’s maven, but I thought the same thing when we went hurry up. Good or not, Grantham defenses take a long time getting set.

    Sweet.

That “Mickey Mouse” offense carried him the whole time he was in Athens.

Safety out of position on a deep pass that goes for a 44-yard TD: check. Defense not set when the offense goes hurry up, yielding a 31-yard TD: check. Defense jumping offside on 4th and 1: check. Multiple plays of 20-plus yards: check. “Grantham you magnificent bastard, I read your book!”

Could he have been referring to the 2nd team he practiced against? Still…. What an arrogant prick.

And yet, Richt was bringing him back for “continuity”. I’ll never understand it.

I think Richt farted during church once, too. Don’t forget that.

Do you think that was all Richt? Could have easily been McGarity telling him that Grantham could be let go the next year to save money.

I don’t know if it was all Richt or not, but he’s the one that made the comment about the importance of continuity.aybe his hand was being forced by McG, but I’m not going to default to that simply to avoid questioning some of the bigger picture decisions Richt made/makes. McG has a lot of room for criticism, but he’s fast becoming the scapegoat for people that don’t think UGA could ever do better than Richt.

Richt’s “continuity” quote was for public consumption and for recruitment. If you doubt that Richt told him to get his act together or he was getting walking papers, then you have no idea who Richt is as a coach. Perhaps some here are pretty mixed up themselves about Richt because they can’t separate his “business” coaching side from his personal feelings and his carriage as the symbol of everything Bulldog. You may be in the same group of people who accuse Richt supporters of wanting him as coach because of his personal values and that say that we are not basing our support on his football acumen. You would be wrong on all counts.

Many are just digging out of their holes to see with objective eyes what McG has been doing to foster this storm, but I have criticized him roundly for several years for his financial nonsupport and for the Regents meeting where Dr. Lawhorne was giving him the reminder for why he was here – to fire Richt. Where have you been?

          Like

          • So. That means you’re a personal confidant of Richt. Look. We all know you’re about as pro MR as anyone can be and I’m a horrible person who wants him fired bc I criticize him at times. That’s your narrative and you’re sticking to it. But as far as you knowing the inner workings of MRs brain or what goes on behind the scenes: as the kids say “pics or it didn’t happen”.

So much is made about Richt’s statement – leading up to or immediately following the Nebraska game – that he didn’t expect any personnel departures or that “continuity is a good thing for Georgia”. Like the rest of us, I have zero clue how that whole situation went down but I seriously doubt the conversations/happenings behind closed doors were as cut and dry as people think…there exist ways to move an employee along without the accompanying distraction/attention of a public firing. It’s neither here nor there at this juncture – both parties landed on their feet and we upgraded nicely – but I just think it’s laughably naive to think we know all the details of the situation.

  8. I was there last night, and the offense absolutely chewed up Towel Boy’s defense. You could tell it was personal even before the game. The team was jumping up and down in front of the tunnel before UL came out. Lorenzo Carter had to be pushed by an official to stand back, and Carter stood his ground. Evil Richt came to Charlotte, and it was a beautiful thing to watch.

+1 not sure what I enjoyed more….1) the UL defense looking confused and unset during our hurry up 2) the UGA defense bowing up at the end of the game to stuff the UL offense when that idiot Petrino called timeout with 11 seconds or 3) Chubb & Co. gashing the vaunted UL defense all night long or the Dawgs defense slowing down the UL offensive genius for most of the night. With all of the controversy, injuries and distractions the Dawgs played a great game!

Great moment in WWL commentating in the 4th qtr: “On a third and long, this Louisville defense is like sharks smelling blood in the water” whereupon the Dawgs immediately ripped off a sweet conversion with a gain of about 18.
Dude obviously has never watched a Grantham coached team.

Yeap. I still love all of the praise he gets for playing Strong’s secondary. Just wait a couple years for all of those guys with fundamentals to be gone, then it will just be as much of a shitstorm as it was at UGA. Grantham is too used to NFL caliber players, not every college recruit knows how to play football and many really just look good relying on natural skill without fundamentals.

To be fair, though, that Louisville safety is legit. If he’s around in the second round of the draft, the Falcons should give him a look.

I thought Louisville’s D was respectable. If their ball-hawking secondary was better at catching passes, they would have had another couple picks, and they rendered Michel and Douglas ineffective. And Chubb had many runs that were stuffed for little or no gain. But he and the OL were relentless.

My favorite part was also seeing the poor communication on Louisville’s defense, and our’s quickly being able to adjust and communicate quickly to each other.

I’ll bet a little bit of Grantham’s soul was chipped away every time one of his guys dropped a surefire pick. Now he knows how I felt the last couple of years.

I would really like to know the rationale behind calling not one, but TWO timeouts with under a minute to play and down by 20 points. This should have pissed off our D and it appears as if it did. Good Call, Bobby.

    • I have no idea why he did it. I figured he would have wanted to get out of Charlotte as quickly as possible especially if he could have found a Harley to ride out on.

It was still only a two score game with roughly four minutes left on the clock when we put Chubb back in, so I could at least see the rationale for doing it. However, calling those 2 TO’s when the game was essentially over was just stupid. I’m of the mindset that when you’ve had your ass handed to you, the best thing you can do is leave quickly and quietly, but then again Petrino still hasn’t figured out that whole getting out of town thing.

This would’ve been crazy talk after the Arkansas game (crazy as in premature) but Nick Chubb is making me seriously contemplate whether the guy who should’ve won the heisman was the second best running back on the team. I’m going to miss how special Gurley was but when you have the second best rushing total in Georgia history, while only starting 8 games, damn.

    • So, IL Dawg

I’m really excited about the future and how good Chubb can be; but he’s not Gurley. When healthy, Gurley is in a league with Herschel. the problem is staying healthy. Chubb could be more durable; but he’s not as fast as Gurley. they can both run through tacklers to gain positive yards when they should be stopped for a loss; but Gurley has more top-end speed. Chubb could break a bunch of records by the time he’s done; but I would rather see us gashing teams with Michel and Marshall carrying some of the load. How fun was it when Gurley and Chubb were both playing? that’s what I want to see the next few years.

Second best single game total. 4th best single season total. And joins #34 as the only UGA RB with multiple 200 yard games. (Yep, Gurley only had the one this season, but came really close.)

It’s entirely plausible to say that we had the 2nd and 3rd best RBs to ever play for UGA on the field this season. Had Gurley stayed out of NCAA target territory and had he stayed healthy, what a season it could have been.

        Like

    • After the entire season played out I have to admit that I will NOT miss Gurley. If we face the cold facts, he submarined the season for a few hundred bucks. Regardless of the hamfisted way the UGa AD kowtowed to the NCAA, Gurley placed it in an impossible position. Warming Chubb up for ’15 is a nice fall-back however.

Yeah, this game was personal. And to the liking of us all.

Can’t help but feel that the “Mickey Mouse” quotes from TG were just fuel to the B-M bonfire. If you think snippy quotes like that were only heard by the players, you would be wrong. Remember when TG first came and the Richt-haters were talking about the dude with NFL credentials replacing Richt? Bet that snippy talk had legs that walked to the ears of certain administrators and played to the “good ole boys” scenario for Richt”s demise. It could have had something to do with the Bobo nonappreciation attitude from them as well.

So do we actually know there is some sort of conspiracy afoot in Butts-Mehre to sneakily get Richt run out of town? I loathe McGarity and his nonsensical philosophies on pay and what makes a great program and I wouldn’t say that it is out of the realm of possibility. But it does at least seem a little premature to assume it and it appears to be gaining traction. Do we have real reason to think this?
