“A lot of sleepless nights” in Gainesville

Florida is down to seven offensive linemen for spring practice.  Three of them are redshirt freshmen.  A traditional spring game is just about out of the question (“I don’t see how you can (have a game) when you don’t have two units,” McElwain said.).

But there’s a silver lining to that cloud.

“The way I look at guys not being able to go in spring is it now gives the other guy an opportunity to get valuable reps. So, that’s what we really try to accomplish with them.”

McElwain intends to conduct a competition for the starting quarterback position.  If I were one of the candidates, I’m not sure how eager I’d be to step up right now.

That’s what we thought last year too…. we need to stay focused (not a traditional quality over the last 5-7 years)

You could use Jim Carey here again. So, they have a chance, eh?

  4. Wow, 2nd time in 3 years that they can’t have a typical scrimmage game because of lack of OL’s. And I thought we had chronic OL depth issues.

Considering how they blocked us all over the field last year I can’t take too much pleasure in this.

First, it isn’t a “game” that any of us have in the Spring, it is a scrimmage. Many have coaches on the field, most do not allow QB contact, or usual kicking/STs, and some players can participate on either side. You wear uniforms with contrasting colors and allow fans to watch, but it isn’t a game, nor do you have to declare a winner (except for fans regarding the QB).

So, as I have asked with UGA, why can’t it be an offense versus defense scrimmage and not require being able to fully stock two teams? It allows more flexibility and gives coaches a chance to go 1s versus 2s, etc.

    • It seems that the University of Georgia disagrees with your point on nomenclature, Mac.

I certainly understand, and have no issue with the use of “game” in the title, but I do feel since everyone plays loosely with what consitutues a “game”, no reason for any school to pretend it is any different from other scrimmages during the spring. As said before, I think TN’s concept of dividing the squad by offense and defense makes a lot of sense. It would certainly solve FU’s problem this spring, and last, and would provide us better talent matchups. I wonder who would impress more this spring, the #1 offense or the #1 defense?

I disagree (at least regarding the winner part) – I have a long standing annual bet with a buddy of mine. We alternate who gets to chose his team for the year – red or black. We attend every year and yell almost (ok, a few decibels down, and we don’t root against our opposing team because that’s also us). The bet is only just a coke, but in the words of Fred Flintstone… bet ! bet, bet, bet BET !

FU’s OL looked just fine against us last year.

Yea, but I recall reading last year about how thin they were on OL and how much trouble they were in. That was all true except when they played us. Hopefully we get payback this year.

Gurk, I still believe last season was a perfect storm of UGA taking them lightly AND being a little deflated by the Gurley suspension not being lifted, and Florida being pissed because they got 2 weeks to hear from sports media how badly Georgia was going to maul them. That in no way excuses our listless play, but I think if that game had been played the weekend prior, with them still reeling from that Mizzou abortion, then Georgia wins big.

          • I hear you bro. I cannot disagree with anything you said. That is why last season was such a mind f**k for me. How the hell can we do what we did to Mizzou and AU and then be raped by that crap FU team? Anyway you’re explanation makes as much sense as anything. Either that or satan had a direct hand in the outcome.
