Having lost the battle to eliminate the SEC’s cross-division rivalry games, LSU’s Joe Alleva (h/t) draws a line in the sand over what really matters to his fan base:
“I don’t care what network we’re on,” Alleva said, “as long as we’re playing at night.”
No Thanksgiving game
Alleva said the networks continue to push for LSU to move its game with Texas A&M to Thanksgiving day, but he has continued to refuse.
“As long as I’m here, we will not play in Tiger Stadium on a Thursday,” Alleva said. “I guarantee you that.”
It’s good to see there are still some traditions held sacred. Now, pass me that bottle, will ‘ya?
Joe Knows What Is Best for LSU. Going down there this fall. I am a little frightened.

How is AU going to get out of Alabama’s shadow if they have to play all their games on Saturday?

We won’t host a Thursday night game because of our stadium being on campus, but I’d bet in the next 5 years or so, we’ll play a road game on Thursday.

If we are the visitors it would not be our call. Of course, we can control who we schedule away out of conference games with to reduce the risk of a Thursday night game.
We have played Thursday night games before: a couple of Thanksgiving night games at Tech.

We need more of Joe Aleva and less of Steve Patterson.

You mean an AD that whines and bitches about scheduling and wants to break-up cross-divisional rivalries because his delicate sensibilities are hurt by facing Florida every year? We need more of those?

I think Damon Evans made a similar declaration. Paraphrasing, but: “We’re not playing on Thursdays. We’ll leave that to Georgia Tech and South Carolina.”

Thanksgiving isn’t a Thursday. It’s the first day of a 4 day weekend. Alright? I’d love to watch a decent game on Thanksgiving night while I slip into 5,000 calorie and bourbon drunkenness. LSU needs to suck it up for my enjoyment.
But UGA on Thanksgiving- No way!

Probably before your time, but back in 1971 UGA did indeed play Tech on Thanksgiving night (in Atlanta, though) on national TV. Back then national TV meant that your game was the only game on the tube. Andy Johnson led UGA down the field with no time-outs and sent Jimmy Poulos over the top for the winning score with about 10 seconds left. If he hadn’t made it, we wouldn’t have had time to line back up. Don’t know if it’s on YouTube, but it’s worth looking for.

We also played at Tech on Thanksgiving night 1975. We played some other games at Tech on Thanksgiving day during the day, too.

Wasn’t before my time, but thanks for the consideration.
When I was growing up we’d spend Thanksgiving morning watching the UGA/Tech freshman game. And it wasn’t on TV.

it was always one helluva game just like the Varsity. Those HS kids from across Georgia were really bustin’ it to prove they were correct for picking their school. The Freshman rivalry carried right over to the Varsity and is what accounted for such a strong hatred in the rivalry. Good Old Fashioned Hate was carved from that Freshman and Varsity clash. Stretchers were in vogue and we kidded that it was part of the Tech uniform.
