Schottenheimer speaks.

And there ain’t gonna be no stinking quarterback competition by the time the season opener rolls around.

Who dat?  Beats them, at least for the moment.

“You’re talking to someone who was in the NFC West the past two years playing with just two or three quarterbacks, unfortunately,” Schottenheimer said. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s quarterback, whether it’s offensive line, we’re trying to create competition. That leads to guys raising their level of play.”

When asked what he’s looking for from the quarterbacks, the first thing Schottenheimer said was leadership. He wants to see them around the building, he added, and has been “pleasantly surprised” at their work ethic.

“If those guys continue to make the strides that they made over the spring and the summer … I feel like we’ll have a quarterback that can help us win at Georgia,” Schottenheimer said. “Somebody will grab the reins. That’s what we expect to happen from the group.”

I don’t know if I’d call that a plan, but at least it’s an idea.  It also goes back to what I said after G-Day:  between the three, there’s somebody who’s at least capable of being a functional SEC quarterback. Schottenheimer’s being paid the big bucks to figure out who that is.

  2. We won a sec championship (and beat Alabama at home along the way) one year with two qb’s that had different skill sets. I agree that you want one, but in the unusual event it’s close and both bring something different to the table, you should consider turning lemons into lemonade.

    • If it was me, I’d sit down two weeks into August with Ramsey – tell him what I want from him that I’m not getting, ask him to commit to achieve it, and name Bauta the starter with Ramsey getting a series or two in each half. Gradually as the season goes on, Ramsey, if he’s got what it takes, will seize the job.

Until then, Bauta gives us the best chance to win early in the season and inside the Red Zone. Ramsey has got to Earn the job IMO. He flashes, but sometimes it is iron pyrite.

In Ramsey, I see a strong arm and poor decision making. Bauta’s arm isn’t as strong, but it’s adequate and his decision making and progression looks better to me. Add in the running ability and I like Bauta as the starter right now.

Maybe we can utilize Ramsey on fourth down. Bring him in and let him throw very long interceptions since our punter can’t kick very far.

I find it impressive that you guys can name the starter without having seen a practice, apparently after seeing one scrimmage ( G Day) and reading stats from the others. Don’t know why we would need a QB coach or any coach for that matter.

As a matter of fact, I have actually seen a practice and in the practice I watched, Bauta was clearly better overall. Ramsey has the stronger arm but was sacked more because of his lesser mobility and did not go through the progressions as well as Bauta. Park is mobile and has a decent arm but threw back to back interceptions twice. Both times, he locked onto one receiver and forced the ball into coverage.

If we’re going to limit discussion to only those who have been to a lot of practices and seen many scrimmages, this is going to be a very sparsely populated place.

I will rely on CMR and Shotty who I suspect have more experience in evaluating QBs. We can all speculate all we want. I just find it amusing so many can reach the conclusions they reach without much real info. Do not mean to offend. Go Dawgs my friend.

When it comes to the depth chart, the coaches watch them every day they practice and are around them all the time and hear what the other players say, so, yes, I agree about relying on the coach’s assessment. The old saying about the 2nd string qb always being the most popular player among the fans is generally true. I’ve always said there’s a reason number 1 is 1 and 2 is 2.

Once they name a starter, I’ll accept that he showed the most of what they were looking for and pull for him to have a Heisman season. Right now, I like Bauta.

                No offense taken, Go Dawgs!

By that logic, why would any of us come here to read / comment about anything, knowing we lack experience and inside information?

I give what the players have said about Bauta’s and Park’s tenacity and work ethic and leadership a lot of weight. They are a bit more quiet about Ramsey.

I wish the best for all of them, but Ramsey looks a bit at sea sometimes.

Parks can run circles around both of them. Let Bauta and Ramsey run the Scout Team. Fuck’em.

  3. Did Schotty coach in the NFL? I haven’t heard him mention it every time he talks. Or every time someone else talks about him.

Having myself done several stretches watching in the NFL, I can tell you yes, The Coach Who Shall Not Be Spelled did indeed spend some time there.

And I can’t remember if Lou Holtz ever mentioned that he coached at Notre Dame…

If we can’t just use the QBR these guys generated in the Spring Game, why did we have the game ? I think the Black Team should get more credit for overcoming the odds of the Red Team that was ranked above them. This galls me beyond comprehension to not see the game recorded for the year’s total and … wha?…. Practice Game? WTF? I bet money on the Red Team and now you tell me it didn’t count? I yell my lungs out for a QB and you tell me it was a fake friggin’ game? It wasn’t when Murray played in the Spring Game. I can’t even tell you my frustration of seeing a QB beat Murray in that game and Murray continuing to start!

Now what’s this shit about not picking a QB yet? Looking for a leader now? What do you want them to do, grab everyone’s short handle and bring’em on the field? That’ll lead’em in a way they won’t soon forget. And we are completely forgetting about the D. It just makes one want to go back to having Happy Dicks on the field. If Oracle Jones can lead a bunch of miners in a duststorm to save a wagon train of whiskey, I reckon we should be able to find more than one QB who can find their own Dicks.

As the king of trite clichés on this blog I would say if you have more than one QB you don’t have a QB. You can’t tell me that as many QB’s as Shotty and Richt have seen in all their years they don’t know who they want. I think Richt is afraid that to name the starter now would lose Bauta to transfer. I think they want Ramsey, but are stonewalling to keep Bauta on board. It’s a shame because I think Bauta looked like a leader and Ramsey just looked like a kid with a good arm. I guess that since the news is out the kid from UVA is coming we’ll see a QB named sooner now.

69, I just can’t see Richt stringing a kid along like that. If he knows Bauta has no chance, I believe he would say so. That’s just my opinion, though.
