“(Giving up back-to-back touchdowns) definitely sucks.”

I have little doubt that Jeremy Pruitt is going to be chewing some serious ass this week about the mid-game defensive lapse that led to much of ULM’s yardage and its two scores on the day, but it’s heartening to hear the players’ dissatisfaction with that as well.

“It was a step toward where we want to be in the future,” outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins, who had seven tackles, including one sack and one tackle for loss, said. “We need to look at the film over the next couple of days and focus on the mental errors.”

.“We did what we needed to do,” cornerback Aaron Davis, who recorded the second interception of his career, added. “We played sound defense, we held them to low yardage and they had a lot of missed pass attempts. The glaring things for us were the two times when we gave up points.”

“We need to come out after halftime with energy and not look at the scoreboard and play like we should play,” Jordan said.

“It was disappointing, but that’s what happens when you come out flat,” outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, who along with safety Quincy Mauger led the Bulldogs with eight tackles, said. “We’re going to learn from that and make sure we come out playing better after halftime.”

Talk is cheap, I know.  But you can’t fix a problem if you don’t acknowledge it exists first.  And I’d rather hear that while there’s time to deal with it, not reflecting back on it during the next offseason.

  1. The first drive of the 2nd half was bad by the defense, but the last drive of the 1st half was due to playing prevent and exchanging yards for time.

Honestly, would you have expected them to say anything different? Of course they were going to be upset about those two drives.

Kudos to that QB for his performance, he had about 3 nano seconds to get those passes off and knew he was going to take a lick. That he was that accurate under fire was very impressive to me. That said, we looked great on D except for stopping the short passing game and that needs to be fixed because that isn’t the last time someone uses that approach to negate our pass pressure.

It wasn’t the first time either, Mac. This is a holdover from last year and from several games that I’ve mentioned here before. It was the confusion in the secondary that, fortunately, was corrected during the game, but we’ve had that confusion last year as well. One of our problems that’s a holdover from last year is that the stats ranked our secondary higher than what I saw happening. We look at the stats and say, “Wow!” we were fine last year. It ain’t exactly true.

While I lay it at Pruitt’s feet, it doesn’t mean that it won’t get ironed out, but you had better bet that it gets our closer attention each game before we lay the championship-ability mantle on Pruitt. It isn’t one pass (like the one with 18 secs left) that bothers me and if you look closely at the 2014 FU game you will see more of the same plus D line problems that overshadowed the secondary play.

I agree with Macallan and not something I am seeing many people talking about. ULMs QB was probably one of the toughest QBs we will play all year. He was taking some serious shots and still hanging in there and delivering. A lot of QBs we will face this year will be getting antsy and vacating the pocket in the face of our pass rush after taking those shots.

My one disappointment with our QB was that Lambert didn’t hang in very tough in the face of the pass rush, I wish he was as tough as the ULM QB. He will face tougher pass rushes as the schedule progresses and he will need to hang in and delivery some balls in those situations to lead us to victories and I am not sure, right now, that I am comfortable with him doing that.

Just how tough are you supposed to “hang in there” ? If he waits to get sacked, then he’ll be blamed for that.

Lets not make a mountain out of a mole hill here.

I clearly said “right now” I am not comfortable with him hangin in and making tough throws. Maybe that improves, maybe not. But if you couldn’t tell a difference in ULMs QB “hanging in” and making tough throws and what Lambert did when he faced some pressure then I am not sure what you were watching.

I believe this was a criticism of Lambert at UVA? I’m not knocking his performance in other areas yesterday and I like Lambert. As I said in my first post “the only thing” I really worry about with Lambert, after what I saw yesterday, is how he will hold up in the face of a tougher pass rush. Will he get happy feet or will he stand tall in the pocket and deliver a strike when we need it

He had more than his share of sacks at Va. Lambert threw two away yesterday rather than take the sacks or run for it as he was instructed to do. Two of his “low passes” were blocked because he was standing in the pocket and taking it since the passes were blocked in his face. That was the most dangerous thing he did yesterday – standing in the pocket for those two passes. Btw, the last blocked pass was due to two opponents coming through the line at the snap of the ball, but he didn’t panic and tried to get the ball off. He still was 67% for the game Two different set of eyes saw the same thing, but our interpretation varies.

One reason I’ve differed here today with several posts is because I perceive an attempt to afix the old yolk back on his neck and that’s totally unfair. He is a good Georgia man who is striving to be a DGD. There are unequal posts here today including upbeat remarks about Ramsey w/o throwing in the fact that he was dumped for standing in the pocket plus other small identical events that some are using while trying to downgrade Lambert.

We have at least two good QBs that we saw in yesterday’s game. There is no reason to try and diminish one of them.

Georgia allowed one more sack last season than did UVa in one more game. Per game average is almost identical.

I didn’t say anything about taking a sack, my concern is what happens when he gets sacked and hit in the mouth. Will he get up and stand in there after that.

But I agree with you I don’t want to hang the yoke of UVA on his neck, this is a totally different team, coaching, situation, etc. I hope he playes great for the Dawgs and takes us to a great year. I will be one of his biggest cheerleaders that is for sure. Enjoyed the debate. Looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Dawgs!

“They had a lot of missed pass attempts”? I’m not going to quibble with the result of the game, as the defense mostly played very well and they did hold them to low yardage, but 23-29 is not what I’d call “a lot” of missed pass attempts.

Year 2… looking good so far. Wan’t to say that ULM was a “quality” small school football team, given that they have pulled off some major upsets over the years. But we really don’t know do we?

Next week begins the real tests.

It’s a far cry from the “one more stop than we needed” and “made plays when it counts” philosophy we had on defense for almost 10 years which really meant, yeah our offense covers up $#&*load of our mistakes but fortunately the other teams defense is even worse screw ups.

I’m not in the arena, but I would probably have somebody jam that #2 Cesar at the LOS before….Oh Shoot!!…he just got open again.

I think Spurrier is going to have some ideas on how to work Cooper open. Let’s hope we get to Conner Mitch first.

+1 We got a whole lot of work to do on both sides of the ball in the next couple of weeks, whatever does not get fixed, Spurrier will find, you can bank that.

Geez some of you guys are too much. The guy is a good football coach but come on he isn’t super human. And most of all he isn’t playing in the game.

ULMs OC made some pretty good adjustments. Agree we need to jam their WRs when the opponent goes with the ‘Boise-ball’ approach. I’d like to see our rushers getting their hands up to bat down a few balls.

  12. Sanders needs to go back to tackling school. His whiff on the qb run and another on a reciever after a catch were the worst things I saw on the defensive side of the ball.
Few qbs are going to be able to make the throws that kid made yesterday. If we continue to pressure like that we’ll be ok.

Either Sanders has to stop listening to Richt (“best camp of anyone”) or get his game excitement under control. Any running QB will eat our lunch with that kind of D play.

Several mentioned earlier that they thought Pruitt was being coy, but I’m not as sure about that. Hope they are correct.

  13. McGraw is gonna be good but he got burned by a really good WR on that TD. The rest of their passing was more lateral than vertical. Thompson played like he forgot he’s now playing against bigger, stronger…even ULM. His pad level was really high and he got handled a couple times. Gonna have to correct that soon because we’re likely gonna need him to have a shot at beating Bama.

But, yeah, starting the 2nd half that way is my only real gripe, albeit a big gripe. That’s one of the most important parts of a game.

Watched Thompson closely on the replay and it was a mixed bag as Rocker said previous to the game. He had some good plays and pursuit. Saw him double- then triple-teamed at one point on their last big drive so we need to remember he is a Fr with a target on his back. He’ll work through that.

So look, I am not seriously bitching here, but the next time they come out flat I hope they just keep it to themselves. It’s the first game of the season and they’ve spent 7-8 months hearing how they failed to win three very winnable games last year, two of which we really should have won (Tech and Florida). I was perfectly happy with the score, but the ho-hum / “we know we have to improve” bit is exhausting.

The QB from ULM played his head off, but nobody at ULM should have a career day against Georgia caliber talent – a team that hopes to be tip 10 at the end of the year based in part on its stout D.

Other than what ever was going on before and after halftime the biggest concern I had was the tackling, or lack thereof, of Dominick Sanders. He looked like he did tackling drills with Reshad Jones all off season. I hope that was just a one game thing but he seemed to have really regressed. I did like what I saw from Malkom Parrish. I thought he played a good game.

I know Rico McGraw got beat a couple of times but he looks like he will be a good one too. Once he gets some experience and adjusts to the speed of the college game more he is going to be a stud. I am sure he will get burned a few more times this year but I have a feeling he will make some big plays as well.

Debby Downer here. After watching Alabama I think we are toast. We are not that physical on either side of the LOS. It will take half out D to tackle Henry. Other than Alabama I think we have a good shot. Our best bet shot if we make the SECC is that the Tide stumbles and doesn’t win the West.

The end of the 2nd, beginning of the 3rd tackling was awful. In the old days there would be Oklahoma drills for the DB’s this week.

Other than that it was OK game.

Come on, Scorp..Georgia is a cut or two above Wisconsin..remember that we played a load of freshmen..and shortened the game at the time when points were going to really flow. Wisconsin looked slow…Get a stop on Henry every now and then makes a huge difference..and Georgia should be able to outdo what the Badgers did…by a good shot.
Yeah, ‘Bama looks great, but also remember that Wis was without their very best player (that was pitiful when he lined up on the Alabama side of the ball).
We saw Alabama’s best shot yesterday..we saw Georgia playing around and experimenting. Alabama usually comes out and plays their very first game in mid-season form..which is admirable…but they won’t improve too much…Georgia, on the other hand..is still a work in great progress.
        Bama’s better..right now…but the Dawgs aren’t that far behind.

    • I’m not scared of their offense. I’m scared of their defense. Henry is going to have problems getting to the second level because he’s a bit too big for the job. If he gets to the second level it’s over. If we can make it a track meet vs. Alabama I like our chances, but do we have the qb to make that happen?

Can’t run right at the teeth of a good sec defense. When you don’t have to worry about someone getting out side and you can shoot gaps and play spill technique you can limit a big lumbering back. I say he struggles against us despite the humor you find in that. I’m more worried about Kenyon drake.

              • Is he 4.3 on that first step? If he is he’s fooling everybody watching and not just you. I could care less how fast he is from 25 to 40 yards. By then it’s over anyway. I don’t see quick feet. I see a bull that needs space and time to get up to speed and poses no threat to get to the edge. You make him change directions in the backfield and he’s done.

I think you both have points and ,Derek, you already mentioned his speed at the second level (or did I read that wrong?), but 4.3 is the fastest that I’ve ever heard of in a “big” man (except You-know-who). It will take a fast and heavy LB to take him down. How many of those do we have?

                  Like

                • First, 4.37 is bullshit. 4.45 maybe. Second, Herschel could get outside. Henry never got outside…against Wisconsin. The key won’t be inside LB’s. They can tackle him. The key will be the dl. When he is in the backfield the guys up front have to play 2 gaps to spill him outside or shoot gaps and make him change direction. I’ve not been sold on this kid as an sec TB since he was a junior at Yulee high. He should be playing at olb. Of course he could prove me wrong, but I say he struggles in sec play.

I think the “first step” doesn’t apply since speed is relative at any part of a 40-yd dash, but only the quickest runners make that time over that distance. Lets be serious, what are our RBs official times or the quickest ever posted for each, official or not. A couple years ago we saw some fancy times posted for LSU’s D players that turned out not to be so “Official” so we don’t need their tempest in our teapot. So if anyone knows the true times, I would appreciate seeing them.

Plus, we know that cuts determine how a guy gets loose so don’t want to push this too far toward the edge of context.

Cojo…Bo, Herschel, Marcus Dupree, Eric Dickerson….all about the same size, all that fast, or faster…Bama does not run the toss to Henry…until they want to.

I don’t know what Derek’s point is…I thought he was kidding. Of course Bama’s offensive line could part the Red Sea and this is one of the reasons Henry does not go outside the tackles very much…why waste the effort. But to call Henry “too big” or “lumbering”…that’s hilarious, break my steel chair funny.
Again, Derrick Henry is roughly the same size, close to the same speed as the exalted list above.

  17. There’s some fine analysis here. I’d like to address the “lack of focus” that has plagued us for some time on the defensive side of the ball. Allowing an opponent to cross our goal line should be taught as the equivalent to leaving the front door open and letting n’er do wells come in and shoot your dog. “If they never score, we can’t lose”, comes to mind.
