“The term we use is RPO, but it’s run-pass option and people are doing it all across the country.”

The POP pass – it’s not just for option offenses anymore.

That’s where Georgia’s offense is different under coordinator Brian Schottenheimer this year than it was in previous years under Mike Bobo. Before, the Bulldogs’ always came to the line with the ability to audible to a run from a pass and vice-versa. They still do now.

But they also have a package of plays in which they actually call a run and block for it but have the option of passing on the same play.

Alabama, as we all know, has famously struggled with the play, most noticeably in the game tying play in the 2013 Iron Bowl.  But one big difference with Georgia is that Lambert doesn’t present a running threat.

So a lot of Saturday’s game will be about whether Lambert has time to make the reads he needs to make, and whether Alabama’s defense can disrupt Georgia’s receivers enough to wreck the timing of these plays.  We’ll see who wins.

AL= Not good at running the plays, but good at defending them? Or is it vice versa?

It going to be a wet week before clearing up Saturday.

Good thing both teams can work on the RPO timing in their indoor practice facilities.

We ran RPO plays last year, under Bobo. The last play in the Tech game (the interception) was one.

Alabama’s linebackers and d backs will be a lot quicker and better than South Carolinas…and they’ll be determined to hold them up on the los..but if they do, then Sony should be able to get around to the outside on sweeps…and Bama, being a fourth of a step slower than lighter defenses, may be susceptable on the edge…and to middle screens.
Also the size of the Bama defensive front will hurt them if Georgia runs the hurry up…alternating backs and running it outside should have them sucking wind pretty good.

Assuming the middle of the defensive line holds up against Bama as it has against everyone else, I think Georgia’s a little better than Bama, possibly much better on offense. The overall margin is small enough that a few mistakes could lose the game, but there’s no reason to expect a loss, besides an expectation that Georgia will make those mistakes because that’s what happens under Richt. Which is a mentality I absolutely understand.

I think Lambert can run “enough” go back and watch the Va. play vs. BYU and a couple of plays we have run. He can get 2-5 yards if needed and if open a little more.

I look for bama’s DLs to get their hands in the air to block/obstruct passes. You may recall our ’03 game vs saban’s LSU team when they used that tactic effectively against Greene. Moving the pocket around is going to be vital. But in the end, I think it comes down to how well we run the ball and avoid mistakes.

I still have nightmares of Eddie Lacy running like a wild water buffalo and cringe to think of Henry doing the same.

    • I think this is the game where Lorenzo Carter earns his meal ticket. He has to stop Henry. Ole Miss did.

Agree, LC7 will be a key figure on a huge stage, and this is a role he needs to play. He can put his name out there as one of the best young defensive players if he can step it up. Ring the bell young man!

It’s probably more on the guys in the middle to stop Henry than it is on Carter. He’ll need to do his part, but if Mayes, Atkins and Bailey don’t generally control the line of scrimmage, it’ll be a long night.

What worries me as much or more is Drake sneaking out of the backfield on wheel routes/screens. He’s not quite at Sony’s level, but he’s close.

He’s dangerous for sure. I’m impressed with Floyd’s versatility on that stuff so far though, so I’m not THAT worried about it. Certainly less so than I was with our draftees last year.

Concern is the defense. Can not allow Bama to hold the ball for long scoring drives. If Defense allows drives like in Carolina and Southern game, it could get ugly. Think Bama is going to hammer the inside and throw short to offset the Dawgs speed.
Lambert. Still not sure about his mental toughness. If he starts off like against Vandy does the OC continue or switch. Think Smart is going to blitz Lambert often to rattle him in the mind, timing, and to make him run.
Sub game on defense. Norcross vs Grayson. We will see soon.

Bama defense only gave up 9 yards of rushing to ULM.
There are a lot of very good RB in D1. LSU, FSU, and a few others think they have the best.
Even Bama thinks their RBs are better than the Dawgs. Bama said they sent an early message to the Dawgs running game, ULM did not get a chains worth. No doubt they plan to keep Chubb from a hundred.
