In praise of Mark Richt (about something)

One thing the man deserves unabashed credit for…

And two of those losses came in games where Georgia battled a once in a decade player and blew a late lead on a freak play.  Not too shabby, in other words.

He’s handled the rivals well, which I love. I just wish he could bottle that rival juice and use it throughout the season. I’ll bet he wishes that, too.

the other 2 were a 1 point loss (2005) and undefeated Auburn team with 3 first round picks in the backfield (2004)

dont forget that the 2005 loss was almost as much of a fluke as 2013. That was the 4th and 15 with about a minute left where their WR ran past a dazed Trey Battle (dinged in the head on the 3rd down play, but nobody noticed until too late) about 75 yards for a score, which was almost, but not quite, fumbled for a touchback. So, 2004 was a loss to AU’s second best team of the Richt era (undefeated, frozen out of the title game), 2005 (fluke), 2010 (their best team, and national champs), and the 2013 fluke.

Whatever anyone’s complaints, nobody can say he hasn’t handled AU, Tech and Tennessee pretty effectively, and a lot better than his predecessors handled AU and UT. He’s beaten Tech slightly more often than even Dooley, who won about 7 out of every 10. He’s done better than most against Florida have since Spurrier’s arrival.

That 4th down play was the exact moment I realized “yeah, maybe we are going to miss Van Gorder a good bit.” It was clinched in the first half of the Sugar Bowl.
And I still wish Willie had been fired after the 2006 debacle vs. UT.

I felt the same way after that play that I felt when Dan Marino beat us on that late 4th down pass in the Sugar Bowl: it took the new DC a little while to destroy the defensive excellence established by his predecessor, but now he’s done it. Never liked Bill Lewis as DC. Never liked Willie Martinez.

Another Mark Richt apology…when will it end? Fire Mark Richt, Fire the AD, Fire the president, burn down Butts-Mehre, build a new Waffle House, bust up the stone Dawg, turn it into filler for your aquarium. Put Harvey Updike to work on the hedges.

I have twelve generations of Georgia graduates in my family, if Mark Richt had hired a decent defensive coordinator we mighta won the Woah.

    I can’t wait to vote for Donald…

Amen, brother! We are the most underachieving program in CFB outside of Texas (and they have a ring at least from 2005). Everyone knows it but data can be used to build anyone’s view point “that Richt is actually doing a pretty good job”. I don’t need stars about what we’ve done with Auburn to know we underperform EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

He’s been great against Auburn, Tennessee and Tech, which is part of the reason he still has a job. He’s been so-so against Florida and South Carolina.

Maybe. I mean he was 0-1 vs. Spurrier, 1-2 vs. Zook, 1-5 vs. Urbs, and 3-1 vs. Muschamp. Thank God Florida hired Muschamp.

Compare that to 1-10 by his predecessors.

He was 2-8 before Muschamp, who was a terrible head coach. He hasn’t been blown out as often either. He improved the competitiveness of the series, but Urban having his breakdown did as much to improve the winning percentage as anything Richt himself did.

I typically give the OT game an asterisk. It’s still a loss…but it’s at least pointing out.

Winning against Mizzou is all that matters at this point. [However, after the Mizzou game, I think we can get into discussions about JAX will set the ‘tone’ against McElwain]

And Spurrier coaching against Goff helped his record as well. You can only play the team that lines up in front of you.

So basically for auburn to beat Mark Richt the last 12 years it takes either an sec champ or a concussed tra battle. Even then auburn has almost lost. Also 5 of our 8 wins were complete dominance. (06, 07, 11, 12, 14)

Yeah you could say Richt ‘sgot their number.

Mark Richt took full control of the Georgia Tech rivalry. He has taken control of the Auburn series. At 10-5, he turned the Tennessee rivalry around and seized overall control there, too.

Spurrier showed up and kept him from taking over the South Carolina rivalry. In fact, he made it a rivalry. But Richt is 9-6 there. The only team that I truly loathe that Richt doesn’t have a measure of control is Florida. And even there, things are closer to even. In the last ten years, we’re 4-6 and over the last 11 it’s 5-6. The last eight years are 4-4, and the last four years, it’s 3-1. It would certainly be nice to get a win there in a couple of weeks if our team could pull its head out of its… yeah.

When you look at the way Georgia has handled the rivalries under Richt, it’s remarkable that things haven’t gone more our way when it comes to conference titles. Blame it on the Gators.

Oh that game vs. ScaM was gift wrapped.as they were not penalized for late hits and down right assaults on Aaron Murray.

Kind of cuts both ways. Has Auburn been great against the east, or has UGA underachieved in a weak division? Probably a little bit of both, as those two Tiger victories against Florida in the late 2000s were pretty solid. Couple that with a few head scratchers against the cocks and gators for UGA, along with a volunteer in 2004 and this year as well. One undeniable thing Richt has done is play Tech and Auburn very well. Two of Auburns four wins have come on miracle plays. The other two were an undefeated team and a national champion, and that was close. Really the only real dominant victory over UGA was by a team on probation, and that wasn’t too ugly. So yeah, great job against Auburn.

One thing I would change about Mark Richt is to add a dash of Spurrier’s desire for long-term vengeance. Both appear to be religious men, but Spurrier’s seems to be more old testament, Southern Baptist.

I never get a sense Mark Richt hates Florida the way he should, for instance.

Of course Spurrier would always tell you who he hated, in the press conference or on the scoreboard. Mark Richt keeps his own counsel about that kind of thing, darn it.

I like to think the pooch kick and return for a TD against Sackerlina when we were already at 52 points was Evil Richt’s attempt to pay back the Ol’ Ball Sack for his “half a hundred” on Georgia while at Florida. Of course, the refs…sigh.

I just like the way Richt has lifted about $40 million out of the UGA bank account over the last 15 years (at least that bought the two SEC championships)…hey, a dollar just doesn’t go as far anymore…

Since I haven’t won a single game and he has won about 140, I can’t say too much…I have to admit he’s a good closer with the Moms and Dads but he’s not an exceptional game day coach…

Some days I wish he would just resign and do something else…

Pretty sure this will guarantee our victories over Mizzou, KY and FL then completely get steam-rolled by Auburn. (We never lose on our home field at Tech).

Coach TBD would be 13-0 because he would have forced Auburn to concede an additional loss with just his icy stare.

It’d be interesting to see if the fanbase were still as National Title mad if the 2002 team had gotten past UF, but gotten the 2004 Auburn treatment (which was likely) and left undefeated, SEC champs, but still stuck playing an OK FSU team in the Sugar Bowl while AnOhIo St and Miami played for the crystal football.

No…..it would have been us and Miami…..Ohio st needed a 4th and 15 TD play from the 30 with time running out to beat Illinois.

No way we lose Saturday. I was worried about Tenn. Couple that with losing Chubb, and yeah. We will win this and could cover. Missouri is not good this year (see SC and Vandy). So the east will come down to the cocktail party as it should (and whether we choke to UK or Auburn)

  17. Last week hurt pretty bad. I mean, there was a time when we hadn’t beaten UT in 20 years, had lost 10 in a row… That loss put UT ahead one game in the all time series after we won 6 in a row. As much as losing last week belongs to Richt, so does the fact that UT wet themselves with glee because they won the game. It wasn’t that long ago that they owned us. That’s all long forgotten now. And that’s Richt’s, too.

Jeezus, Stoop…”pretty bad”…. pretty bad? That may be the worst loss since Penn State…it makes Jasper’s no-fumble look like nothing, makes the time out loss to fucking Florida look like a fun day at the Gator Bowl.

Pretty bad? Not only did we lose to Butch Jones, we lost one of the best football players ever to wear the colors, cut the heart out of this team and broke mine.

Pretty bad? Really Stoop…Pretty bad? This was worse than Chancellorsville.

It was horrific, the absolute rock bottom shit.
