Passing the Faton?

By now, I would be surprised if you hadn’t heard the report Gridiron Now’s Mike Huguenin dropped last night about the decision to name Faton Bauta as tomorrow’s starter.

Sources tell gridironnow.com that Bulldogs junior Faton Bauta, who has been the third-stringer for much of the season, will start against the Gators in a game that seems likely to determine the SEC East title. Greyson Lambert had started Georgia’s first seven games.

Bauta (6 feet 3, 215 pounds), a fourth-year junior who already has graduated, has received scant playing time as a Bulldog. He has played in 14 games in his career, but hasn’t run or passed the ball in seven games this season. Most of his action this season has come as the holder on kicks.

In his career, Bauta has 10 rushes for 46 yards and two touchdowns, and he is 4-of-5 for 48 yards as a passer.

There have been plenty of rumors over the past week that the coaches had opened up the competition at quarterback – indeed, Richt flat out acknowledged that Lambert, Ramsey and Bauta all took snaps with the first unit – so the idea that Bauta might get some snaps against Florida isn’t a total shock.  But the idea that he will start is unusual and surprising.

I say unusual as opposed to unique because, if it’s indeed the case, it wouldn’t be the first time Mark Richt elected to change horses in mid-stream.  If you’ll remember, in 2006, Joe Cox briefly supplanted Matthew Stafford as the starter after Cox pulled Georgia’s nuts out of the fire with a brilliant game winning drive against Colorado, only to lose his place back to Stafford when Cox proved ineffective in his only start.

Their situations aren’t identical, of course, in that at least Cox had a moment to prove he could lead the team in a game, while Bauta, as the stats Huguenin cites above show, has never had any meaningful playing time before.  And throwing Bauta out there to start and play a game against an above-average SEC defense to get his feet wet is one helluva sink or swim call by Richt.

If that, indeed, what it is.  Keep in mind all we have to go on right now is an Internet report.  No one on the staff or the team has acknowledged it yet.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that it’s true and Bauta walks out on Georgia’s first possession to take the snap from center.  What does that tell us?

  • First and foremost, it’s not a decision you make if you’re Mark Richt and you’ve decided to play for next year.  You’ve said all along your team is in the hunt for the SEC East title and now that you’ve made it to the game that will likely decided which East team goes to Atlanta, you’re not suddenly deciding to throw a kid who’s already graduated out there to see if he’s got what it takes to run the team in 2016.
  • Second, starting isn’t the same thing as playing the entire game.  For all we know, Schottenheimer has scripted a complete first series around Bauta and after that’s run, things go back to Lambert.  That would be a sensible way to have used the bye week to prepare a wrinkle or two for Florida’s defense.  And the best thing about that would be Georgia would have a set of plays that could be used later in the game in third down and red zone situations – both areas of weakness for the offense so far this season.
  • Third, the timing of the leak is interesting.  It comes conveniently on the team’s travel day, so there’s no way the coaches are available to shed any light on the situation.  But it comes so close to the game that it’s too late to expect Florida to spend any serious preparation time on whatever wrinkle it might think Bauta brings to Georgia’s strategy.  Which begs the question what the purpose of the timing of the news is.  (Unless you really assume this got out by total accident.)
  • Finally, what kind of message have the coaches sent to Lambert and Ramsey with this decision?  If it’s just a limited set of plays in a specific package for Bauta, then it’s pretty easy to explain the strategy.  But if this is some sort of sea change in deciding who’s best to lead the offense, boy, you’d better hope the coaches know what they’re doing here, because if that goes south, all you’re left with are three quarterbacks who have no reason to feel any confidence in what they’re being asked to do – not to mention their mates on offense.  (And what pressure does this put on the defense!)

All of which is my way of saying I don’t think this is a sign of desperation on Richt’s part.  But seeing I’m surprised by the decision in the first place, you may not want to rush to accept my take on things.  Your thoughts?

All week, I’ve been praying for a Spurrier v FSU 1997 game plan, alternating between plays.

I’ve always thought that game was the most brilliant of Spurrier’s career. By the time FSU got a feel for it, he had gotten the game into the second half.

It’s way too ballsy for Richt to pull, but I still have my hopes up.

Frankly I would love to see it, but not only because of the ineffective QB play to date. The main reason I would be all for it is that it would show that aggressive Richt is showing up for this game. That is my chief complaint about Richt. His approach to games and strategy often doesn’t make the culture of the program that he has built. Georgia under Richt is a team that is built to play aggressively and not take a business-like approach like Alabama. When we take an aggressive approach (see going for it on first drive of Auburn game) the team tends to respond and we often crush people. When Richt is in his shell and playing it safe (see punting from the Alabama 38 on first drive this year), we tend to get smoked. I wish Richt would just consistently adopt an aggressive approach and damn the results. I think the fans would be much happier with that approach regardless of if it cost us a game here and there (and I think our record would likely be better overall).

I agree with this. I think that a risky Richt could be great with this team. Our best years have been aggressive teams with a ton of swagger.

A thousand times this. This is the problem at Georgia, and why I wanted to see Faton shortly after the season began. Because the reports were the kid was a gamer and had some desire and wanted to win even on the scout team, and that kind of attitude is infectious. The stinking 4th and 1 punts make me think Richt does not know what kind of games he’s playing in and agree it sends a lousy message to his team.

Maybe desperation is too strong a word, but, if it happens… I’m betting the coaches realized we weren’t going to get it done with the offense we’ve had since the Chubb injury.

Roll the dice. If we are playing from behind, Lambert in relief of Bauta is a shorter long shot than Bauta or Ramsey in relief of Lambert.

  8. Seems a little like what Saban/Kiffin did at the start of the Ole Miss game, naming Cooper Bateman for the element of surprise. (I know it hardly worked, but you can’t blame any of those three for the fumbled opening kickoff which set the tone for a wild game.) I also think all the mystery and leaks have been designed – very well – to occupy a few hours of limited and precious Gator practice time and coaches’ attention. Any edge helps, I guess, but running between the tackles, winning field position and turnovers, and rattling Treon Harris seem more likely to succeed than these mindgames.

Neither Lambert nor Ramsey has looked confident anyway, so I don’t see how it’s a major risk should Bauta start. Either he plays well and sparks the team or he doesn’t and they’re ineffective, which they likely would have been regardless. Maybe he turns the ball over more than Lambert and you get blown out, but if you’re going to lose, you might as well lose spectacularly.

I think the emotional lift piece of this may be a little understated. We know that Bauta is the hardest worker on the team and has the respect of his teammates. … Not because coaches are telling us that this week, but because we’ve heard it from players for multiple seasons. I think Bauta has a lot of respect in that locker room…and frankly, it would just seem easier to get up for a guy that you know is working as hard as you are every day to get better.

I think that’s a part of this. I’ve got this picture in my mind of Bauta running the ball in for an early lead off a bootleg and the UGA side erupting with enthusiasm and confidence.

(I also have visions of Joe T on the ground…so there’s that)

    Here’s an incredible statistic:

Georgia has played THREE football games in October so far. During that time, Georgia has scored THREE offensive touchdowns.

Whatever the coaches did to prepare this team to win football games obviously isn’t going “as planned” so far. That’s the only thing that’s obvious to me right now.

Maybe Faton will save Grasshopper Mark from a cold winter.

Of course the apologists will spin it calling richt brilliant and a genius for starting #10, and if #10 does poorly the apoligists will say I told you so and richt is the best judge of qb talent and coach to ever coach the game of football. A win win either way.

“Believe it when I see it. If it does happen and #10 plays well and leads us to a win will make richt look more stoopid then anyone ever thought he was.”

It will also have his team in the driver’s seat for the SEC East, but that’s just a minor quibble.

For the record, the only “stoopid” thing that could be taken from such an outcome is looking at each football game throughout the course of a season as some kind of static, uniform event. As if the entire time each result could have been changed by something as simple as… you know… starting the third string quarterback.

“Hoping #10 starts and lights up the gaytor’s asses.”

The Senator had a brilliant post a few weeks back about the preening narcissism that drives most of the Richt-haters. This is a great example. I think most reasonable Georgia fans would hope that we “light up the gaytor’s asses” regardless of who starts at QB, DE, kicker or mascot. But, you’re hoping for something a little bit more than that, aren’t you? You NEED that validation. That’s why for you every loss is a loss but not every win is a win.

I honestly don’t know how y’all can live that way. To say nothing of enjoying a sport played by kids.

I wouldn’t call it desperation, more of a recognition that what you’ve been doing so far hasn’t worked. And so far the offensive Georgia Way has been coming up snake eyes. So either you keep plugging away and hope the old way works, or you try something new. It would seem that the coaches have settled on the latter.

Personally, I like it. Why not give Bauta a chance to spark something? He would have to be pretty horrendous to do any worse than Lambert.

I like the move for Richt even if it doesn’t work.

If it dosen’t work, then he should replace Bauta with one of the others. Keep trying something, anything.

If Ramsey and Lambert don’t have the mental toughness to handle being replaced for ineffectiveness, then they should not be playing QB. It is the nature of the position. If 2 QBs with 3-4 years of major CFB experience can’t handle that, then you won’t be losing much if they transfer out. They don’t have the fortitude to succeed anyway.

Pulling for the gators tomorrow so you can get a new coach is not the same as a colts “fan” wanting to lose to the Vikings in week 16. It’s not even close. Not the same universe. It’s apples to fucking Mack trucks. They aren’t close to the same thing. Wanting to finish 32nd so you get the first pick is not the same as pulling for the gators. Now if you think a “colts fan” can decide that they should go 0-16 in August instead of pulling for them to make the playoffs then that’s a comparable argument. A stupid argument, but comparable. I’d say that a so called fan that wants to go 0-16 in August for a draft pick the next spring is not a fan but is definitely a douche.

Lambert has just show that his decision making is questionable. He can be really good when he has time…but I just don’t understand what happens to him sometimes. I’m of the camp who thinks he hasn’t been as bad as people say…but the biggest flaw to me showed up in the Mizzou game on that game tying ‘drive’. First down…he throws behind the line of scrimmage on the run-pass option for a loss of 5. Third down…he has the right set up for the corner route, stares it down, for some reason doesn’t throw the ball and instead throws to the middle of the field for what could have been a game killing INT.

That’s not tools…that’s decision making. You have to make the right decisions or the tools don’t matter.

I doubt Bauta plays any more than a couple of well scripted drives even if he does make the start. While we certainly need to do something to kick start the offense, there is nothing Richt has ever done in his entire time at Georgia that would lead me to believe he would suddenly name his number three the number one. If that’s actually the case, the narrative next week becomes the hot seat, win or lose, Because even if it succeeds the move will be interpreted by most as an act of desperation. You don’t wait until you’re on the threshold of your third loss to release the Kraken.

This is not desperation or some exceptionally bold move. It’s recognizing that Florida is not going to respect our passing game (rightfully so) and will play to stop the run. This move just gives Georgia more options if Florida is successful at stopping the run. It would be desperate or even bold had Lambert not been grossly inconsistent. One game he’s setting NCAA records and the next we question if they guy is color blind. Supposedly Fauta puts in the work, so give him a shot. Worse case? .. he plays equivalent to his predecessors.

Yes, excellent observation. The offense they’ve designed is run the ball and throw off of play action. that requires deception and respect for both the run and pass options. That is just not the case. It seems logical to me that an option is to diversify the running scheme. Bauta enables you to do that and may even help bring play action back into play.

“He goes, ‘I don’t want anybody to know but there’s a good chance I might [start] and I’ve got two tickets for you and I want you to come up.’” What part of “I don’t want anyone to know”, does this guy not understand? I am in the camp that Bauta WAS going to start, but won’t now because the cat is out of the bag.

No way this dude talks without Faton’s approval.

I am guessing Richt ok’d this getting out, because it leaked and he didn’t want it to have that black jersey effect.

I think the team will play really hard for Faton.

true debby, but since the bama beatdown, CMR has been of the mindset to alert people beforehand if he was going to do a whiteout or something. He wants the energy at the start of the game, but doesn’t want it to seem like a gimicky key to the win. The key to the win will be execution, not gimmicks, CMR has learned this the hard way. I like this move.

Faton has a career in the CIA as it’s first unintentional whistleblower. He probably would get a huge settlement after they fire him.

How stupid can one get? It’s like going on the internet in front of distinguished alumni from your school and admitting that you smoke pot.
    Sheesh.

    Think I’ll have a cookie.

  35. I will be surprised if Bauta starts and stays out there long, but if he does I will tip my hat to Richt, because win or lose, playing the 3rd stringer at this point opens him up to much criticism. I am anxious to see if this guy can make some plays tomorrow. To hell with Florida.

During the bye week we obviously worked hard and got Bauta.

Bauta is plenty good enough to make a game of it, all 3 of these kids are talented top 1% nationally, regardless of what we’ve seen on the field.

I’m betting the line works harder for him.
He communicates with the line better both at the line and between plays.
He will option, scramble, or pass well. Not gonna see any 35-45 yard long darts though.

He knows CMR well and I bet they work together better than the others.

I’m thinking it will be a good move, it’s not a downgrade in talent really, just not proven.

Barry Switzer has said that if he were coaching today he’d run the option. Pro style is too delicate and relies too heavily on the right mix of talent and it’s too random an occurrence to have it all. Just attack east/west/some passes if effective. The only goal of play caller is to get 1st downs. The idea of throwing on 2nd and 5 and he would fire the O coordinator on the spot.

Have wondered all season why FB never got into a game to run the offense, or why he got so few reps in scrimmages. Now he jumps from 3 to 1 during a bye week. Only thing I could come up with as a possible explanation is Bauta’s style of offense is so different that it is not interchangeable with what GL and BR run and would cause too much of a disruption to use him as a #2. I know he can run our base offense, he did in the spring, but perhaps we leave too much on the table when he does so. The bye week may have been the only chance to add something radically different.

Or maybe some of you are right and it is just a small package of plays and nothing drastic at all. Certainly makes it more exciting, don’t remember anything like this in Athens, although I have seen many other programs make dramatic changes in mid-season. Bring it on.

Am I the only one wondering if this was the plan since day 1, to hold Bauta out until the WLOCP?

That is an interesting thought, Fetch, and one that I’ve had..but even if it was an original plan, I’ve got to believe that if Lambert were still performing at the high level he started on, he would start this game. Maybe it was a contingent plan all along?

I’ve wondered, if he really was that close to being a starter before the season, why he hasn’t so much as sniffed the field. If they didn’t want any tape of him out there, that would make sense. It’s not like Florida hasn’t shown up at the WLOCP with a brand new offensive scheme before. Hell, even Corch beat us once by scrapping his O and starting over. It’s not like agent Muschamp was the first.

Taking reps in off week. Alleged new starter.
Bet the AD has a list with the future. Head coach on it to start 2016.
No doubt the Florida game has decided UGAs conference title hopes.
Once again CM R pulls a black helmet out of the trainer’s s bag.
CM R goes to a 5-10 record against gators.
    Nothing changes.
Keep making the same mistake you get the same mistake.
