You may have heard the story about Tim Tebow comforting a fan yesterday watching his Arizona Fall League game after the fan collapsed from an apparent seizure, but maybe not the best part of it.
He sat talking with the man for roughly 15 minutes. “Sorry this happened,” the man said. “Glad I got the chance to meet you,” Tebow replied.
The man, aware that Tebow works as a college football analyst, shifted the conversation to that topic. Tebow asked for his favorite college team and he replied, “Bulldogs.” Raising his voice in mock anger, Tebow said: “Are you kidding me? I don’t know how to respond to that.” He listened intently as the man told him about a major recruit on Georgia’s radar.
There is so much to love here — the guy having the presence of mind to talk Georgia football while waiting for the paramedics, Tebow being a good enough sport to play along, and just a dash of recruiting obsession — for me to pick out my favorite part, but I do love it all. Go Dawgs, indeed.

Our own favorites David Greene/Aaron Murry were/are pretty much busts in the NFL. Tebow by comparison in three years threw for 2500 yards and rushed for 7 tds. Something like that and did get some starts. Greene never played a snap Murray is currently on practice squad.
But I’m still none to fond of Tebow with that overtime foolishness.

Greene and Murray also weren’t 1st round picks like Tebow was. You could probably say Tebow was a bust because he was a 1st round pick of the Broncos. So, to me, apples & oranges because a 1st round pick of a QB is supposed to be a future franchise-type of player as opposed to a 3rd (Greene?) and a 5th (Murray) QB are projects that a team hopes to become a contributor.

He was not a franchise qb. I think that was the concensus from experts. It was kinda crazy that the Broncos rolled the dice if I remember correctly. Not a JaMarcus Russell bust but I concede not a wise move. 3rd or 5th round worthy? Sure.

No doubt but an NFL QB that completes 46.5% of his passes isn’t an NFL quality QB. He was an excellent college player, but his skills and the lack of coaching he received at UF doomed him as a potential NFL quarterback.
Yes, he caught lightning in a bottle that one season, but that season was still pedestrian at best.

I have never understood the hate/ridicule for Tebow, even among the Bulldog fan base. Guy is a very good dude, and a helluva an athlete. Along with Herschel, one of the few athletes who cold dominate a football game all by himself. It doesn’t matter at all to me that his game did not translate to the pros. Must have lived too long when, among many other bizarre examples, the folks with morals and integrity are put down and the trash is celebrated widely. Good on Timmy.

Nah, you can never dis a guy because his supporters include fools. He cannot help that Gator fans include a high percentage of bad folk….but it would be a good place to start his missionary work and save them from what they have become! I am sure Herschel didn’t dig on those guys/gals who egged Murray’s crib. But I must agree, everyone should disassociate themselves, strongly and loudly, from psychopaths like Corch.

…and the striped assholes who allowed Tebow to stop a game for 5 minutes while he jumped up and down to celebrate a 1 yard gain while AJ looking into the crowd after a potential game winning td is flagged for excessive celebration.
That is one of the clearest examples of implicit racial bias you’ll ever find.
I agree with Mac though. I don’t hate on Tebow as a person. He has a lot of admirable qualities. More than most that’s for sure.
I do hate on those with the Tebowners. The kid was a very good player but not the greatest player ever or of the era. Those pressure passes he hit vs. bama in his second to last SECCG were outstanding. He also had a very good supporting cast, a great staff and the right skill set for the offense. Should have never been a first round NFL pick tho. Huge error in judgment. He doesn’t have the release for the NFL game.

You know, Derek..I’ve gotta hand it to you….Nobody else in the world would have seen those incidents from a racial perspective…This is why I say we have gone backwards in racial harmony for the past few years.
I enjoy a lot of what you write, but this one kind of makes me sad. I’ll say this..it may be a color thing…but the color that SEC refs discriminate against is red…well, red and black.
Anyway, I respect your opinion on this even if we don’t see it the same.

..and it’s well documented by my history of posts that I believe refs are by and large assholes..well, at least enough of them to ruin a couple of games every year..but I never even though about them being racially prejudiced. If I thought that, It would ruin the sport for me.

I was at the game, but I saw a replay of the post game show with Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman. They were livid at the call, and a racial component was alluded to by Brando. He said something along the lines of ” Spencer’s not going to say it, but I’ll say it. The bias of some of these celebration penalties need to be looked into.” And he was exactly right.

If so, that’s sad. Personally, I doubt it. It’s more than likely a bias against a team or maybe a coach. If a guy is a constant hotdog..maybe. But if there was a racial bias, how do we explain this?

I can’t explain why Tebow never got a flag with any other rationale. The guy stopped a game every single time he got a yard for a first down and never once was a flag thrown. Ever. Implicit bias isn’t purposeful. The fact is that the celebration rule was put in place to stop certain types of people doing certain types of celebrations. That’s undeniable. Its naive to think that it’s inception had no effect on its application.

In my opinion it is that (fawning admirers) but also Tebow himself. Wearing his religion on his sleeve like he does/did was not popular with a lot of people. And the religious right which DID like it praised him endlessly, which turned even more people off to him.

For me, Mac, it was the juxtaposition of saint Tim and devil Urban. Tebow isn’t a typical Gator and Meyer was prototypical.

I’m with you, Mac. When you separate Tebow (the athlete and the person) from all the insanity that follows him everywhere, I don’t know how people can dislike him. I’m not saying any random fan has to like him, particularly. I’m just perplexed by those who seem to have made a cottage industry of hating him.

Eh, I don’t hate the guy, but I find his never-ending desire to find a larger religious soapbox tiring. His pro-life super bowl ad was grating, as is this seemingly endless PR campaign to position him as some kind of messiah. I’ll give him credit for not attending the RNC as was initially reported by Trump’s goons.

All that commercial said was that his mother’s doctor suggested she terminate her pregnancy due to potential complications. She decided she couldn’t do that. She made her choice and was willing to deal with the consequences. I haven’t watched it since that Super Bowl but didn’t have a problem with it when I saw it.

I think you are blaming the wrong person for the gator chomp issue, air all your bullets squarely at the SEC office in Birmingham for all of that. I guarantee you Tebow would never have run down the sideline like that oif it were recognized as taunting by the officials, and that is exactly what it is.
How the other SEC teams tolerate that and don’t demand a level playing field I will never know. Don’t think our guys wouldn’t get in someone’s face and bark if they saw it go unpunished. It should be brought up in a public interview with Sankey and Shaw and make them defend ot.

Tebow was the flavor of the year and I never have held against him(as if he could give a damn about what I think). In his shoes, I would have been taking advantage of every possible $$$$ making chance I could.
