Easily my favorite part of this Jeff Schultz cri de coeur — and, man, does he sound bitterly disappointed — over Georgia’s decision not to suspend Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith for, um… not violating Georgia’s drug policy is this one-liner:
Neither failed a drug test (according to Georgia).
Jeez, talk about disillusionment. If you can’t trust Greg McGarity any more, whom can you trust?
Amazing leap of logic to reconcile “Welcome to the new world” with Jonathan Ledbetter’s six-game suspension. I know, I know, forget it, he’s on a roll.

I’ve always felt that the claims of the AJC having it out for UGA was a bunch of hot air, but Schultz’s last 2 columns on the Dawgs definitely lend the theory some credibility.

He’s not the only one to pile on. Most of the blogs and beat writers are doing the same thing. Lead with the “UGA not suspending the two players” in the headline then explaining why in the body. We have made our bed with these hacks and now we just have to expect they will be who they are, hacks.

So the cops decided to lie about these football players? The RA and the cops lied about the smell of weed and there was no weed. Doubtful.
Or they WERE were smoking weed AND then passed a drug test. Doubtful.
Or the drug test they passed was a while ago and no one made them take one this week in which case CKS is in charge and the AD/Pres. have been neutered. Probable.

in my days at Russell Hall, we jammed towels under the door and smoked a lot of cigarettes. In this instance, the cops managed to find all the other weed items but not the weed. Seems like it wasn’t for lack of searching. Could it be possible that they weren’t smoking pot?
I know, I know, your uncle is a cop and my suggestion that cops sometimes say they smell or see shit they don’t is offensive to you and your family and all of police everywhere from now until eternity

So….no possession, no arrest, no lack of cooperation with police, no failed test equals “UGA should have suspended them”.
Look, do I think they probably smoked a little? Sure. But it was a small enough amount that they could get rid of it and still beat a test.
If they failed the test and they still wanted to have them play, they would have buried the results like the one that Crow failed in 2011 and then suspend them the following week.
I honestly believe that they were smoking, but that they legitimately passed the test too.

Have to call BS on Schultz. The fact that the cops got called to a dorm where football players live proves the Georgia Way is still in full effect. Didn’t McGaritys statement say they were tested as well. I also don’t believe Kirby has built that kind of clout to circumvent the policy assuming he would as Schultz says.

First, I will be cheering my team on in Jacksonville and hope UGA can somehow win. That said I want to know what is not accurate regarding Schiltz’s article. Can you guys tell me? Already we have had 2 instances(Julian Rochester) where the evidence seems reasonably clear where we have blessed athletes with getting away with potential criminal issues. That makes me feel really dirty. Already a strong message is being sent not only to the fans, but also the players that UGA no longer wants to develop adults into citizens, we ONLY want to win games. My opinion and it may not be popular but that’s my thoughts.

A strong message that UGA doesn’t want to develop its players into citizens? Because a couple of kids didn’t smoke pot UGA is now, in your mind, the functional equivalent of a drug dealer, or worse a crime factory?
I’d suggest you calm down a little. These kids HAVE to go to every class, get up and practice at 5am, wear suits before games, get lectured on every aspect of their lives, and on the whole leave UGA grown ass men unlike most kids who fuck around in college for 5 years and barely scrape by.

I like the attitude, but the upright citizen brigade consolation prize we took home at the end of each loss didn’t do much for me. Not saying the policy affected the losses, but I’m not shedding any tears over us not sticking it to kids for smoking weed.

What do you want them to “stick it to the kids for?”
Do we want to coaches to be like parents, buddies, personal trainers or overseers?
It seems to me that the coaches have an obligation to these kids to make them better men than would be otherwise. The coaches should ensure that the campus is not unsafe because of the players they’ve brought onto campus. They have an obligation to ensure that the team members represent the school well at all times. They should ensure that the players have respect for the position they hold: a very public representative of a proud institution of higher learning.
If we do all of that then we can worry about wins and losses.. If you want wins from a bunch of dope smoking disrespectful morons who threaten public safety then IMHO youre an asshole and I’d like you to realize that you’re a closet auburn fan and proceed accordingly.

I completely agree. I want to win big and do it the right way. Kirby said as much in his press conference when he took the job and was asked that question about the drug policy. Just as I trusted the previous guy to mete out discipline for University and team policy violations, I trust Kirby will get the facts and make a decision in the best interest of the young man and for the program.

Georgia should suspend Jeff Schultz’s press credentials for the rest of the season. If Jeff Schultz wants to advocate for the suspension of two players with no evidence of wrong doing other than the alleged smell of marijuana, he should be informed that he is no longer welcome until he goes to some remedial classes on basic fairness in journalism and legal issues.

Correct. He can write what he wants without fear of penalty from the law. We do not have to grant him a credential, and I’d bet some serious conversations w/ someone above Shultz’s pay grade and UGAA have happened since the article was published.
Our radars didn’t sense you were speeding. We followed you around the rest of the week and never found you speeding. But you should still probably get a ticket. That’s Shultz thinking.
He’s criminalizing two kids which the justice system chose not to charge, criminalize or detain. There are some places one could call that defamation or libel. And this is a justice system in Athens that has had no problem arresting student-athletes.

I’m just excited that the Process is kicking in. But it takes time. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” should have been going on long ago. Do we really think Gurley or Green would have sat under Kirby? Or that Marshall, Mettenburger, Matthews, etc.,etc. would have ever left much less find other SEC pastures? ‘Bout time we catch up with the rest of the football world!
