The curious case of Faton Bauta’s Georgia start

The ones that know why aren’t talking.  Which is probably the only intelligent decision that’s been made in connection with the entire debacle.

We will never know but I wonder if it was Richt’s idea or Schott’s.

I’m definitely in the camp that thinks it wasn’t such a bad idea to start Bauta that day.

I agree with Daniels, Bauta’s HS coach, though:

“Daniels remains perplexed like everybody else about the fact that Georgia really didn’t change its offensive look or philosophy with Bauta at the controls. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Bauta was considered more physical than Georgia’s other quarterbacks and a better runner.”

The real shame is in the fact that they didn’t use him like they should have tried to use him. They hung him out to dry. Set him up for failure. I felt so bad for that dude as the game unfolded.

      Jared,

You missed a really bad game. https://youtu.be/IRR1Nq2sPcc

Watch it again and tell me where the coaches did Bauta wrong with the play calling.

The kid just can’t play, period. He’s not good enough.

My point is that they new that, right? They knew the guy couldn’t play very well in their system. After all, that’s why he was #3 on the depth chart.

So when it was announced he would start I think most people assumed they had something other than “their system” in mind. Surely (SURELY! we assumed) the game-plan will look different because we have a guy who’s very mobile?

And while we’re encouraging one another to watch the game again (which I never will), why don’t you watch it again. The dude made some great plays in that game.

          Faton made great plays?

          When?

I have re-watched every offensive play. What is said about the game plan is simply not true. The plays that would most take advantage of his abilities, may have been the worst plays of the game.

You can have your own opinion but then there’s tape. The latter has more credibility with me.

My suggestion is to watch the first zone read keeper we ran.

              • Yep, that was an awesome game plan. I really liked how, on the second series, they ran Douglas from the I formation up the gut on 2nd and short. He got stuffed by the middle linebacker. So what did the brain trust do? They ran him up the gut again on 3rd, but this time without a fullback, only to get stuffed again. Genius…..just like you Derek.

If you can’t beat a LB one on one twice you aren’t an SEC back. Sony was hurt remember. On the first one if Douglas hits the lb anywhere but the middle of the chest, he gets a first down. The second play was due to a missed block. Again Douglas just has to defeat the lb enough to get a yard. He couldn’t or didn’t.

Rewatch the plays. I have. Neither was as bad as putting 16 in the I on 4th down with Chubb as the lead blocker. WTF?

But back to 2015 what about Reggie dropping that punt? What kinda play call was that? Thanks bobo!

Then I don’t have to tell you that the failure was on Douglas on the first play and douglas and an o linemen on the second.

I’m sure you have some 3rd and 4th and 1 calls that would have worked better AND better yet the players would have executed them perfectly.

The point being a decent call looks bad when the players don’t execute.

My assessment of a bad call call is when you are asking a kid to do that which you know he can’t do. That’s my problem with the 4th and 1 vs Vandy. 16 can’t break a tackle and Chubb is no FB.

Chubb blocked no one and 16 went down on first contact. That’s a bad call.

If your goal is to actually convince others then your tone should be different. You should recognize that. But maybe that isn’t your goal. In which case your simply a troll. An intelligent troll? Maybe. But still a troll.

  3. Derek

The decision to go with him may be inexplicable. Personally I feel they had 3 bad choices.

However, the idea that the game plan was the issue is annoying. Pull the game up on YouTube. Watch the first read option play. Bauta is one on one with a guy that outweighs him by 50 pounds or more and Bauta loses. That is not supposed to happen. Dan Marino would have been equally successful on that play, today.

There was a reason Bauta was third string. The coaches may have forgotten that, but he had every chance to succeed had he been capable of succeeding. You can’t beat UF with a guy who, on his best day, plays mop up duty in Fort Collins.

I felt bad for Bauta. He was dumped into an almost impossible situation and apparently was wholly unprepared and the coaching staff didn’t seem to utilize his skill set. Things went the way you might expect and then the whole thing blew up. I always wonder if he blames himself for Richt getting fired. He would be wrong to do so, but I can easily see him thinking that.

Don’t see anyway he could feel that way, of course he was not. And I doubt that game played a huge role in the decision at all. It was a mysterious set of circumstances, I never understood why they announced it in advance. Why give FU any notice of a QB change during the off week? Only thing I can think, especially since we did not change the offense at all, was they felt FU would prepare for a totally different offense with a running QB under center, and enough time to put in some significant changes. Certainly didn’t work, but it is the only way the pieces fit for me.

CMR was told after the Missouri game he was out at the end of the season, started Bauta as a favor to the kid, and coasted the rest of the way. The UM offer was a fortunate TOE, I suspect that CMR would have been just as happy doing mission work and speaking tours. I only met him once, but I never go the impression there was anything nefarious about the man.

We were not a good team last year, but we still won games which if I recall is the point of the enterprise. I think they coached ’em hard for the most part and fought until the end.

“because he already had put out feelers for the Miami head coaching job.”

Except that somebody had already felt him up.

“How Miami got Mark Richt to become its new coach”

“So how did Miami get its coach?

Seeds were actually planted back in October. Shortly after Al Golden was fired, athletic director Blake James reached out to Richt’s agent, Mark Carmony, to gauge whether Richt would have any interest in the job. James had identified Richt as his No. 1 target and already had a working relationship with Carmony, who also represents Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga. Carmony told James that Richt was happy at Georgia and not interested in leaving.

In the month that followed, Miami hired a search firm to help identify potential candidates and hammered out the qualities it hoped to find in its next coach….

James decided it would be best to wait until the regular season ended before really putting its search into high gear. Things really started moving the day after the Pittsburgh game. Miami reportedly talked to several coaches, but the one it truly wanted became available on Sunday, Nov. 29. Richt was done at Georgia after 15 seasons. James called Carmony that day to again express Miami’s interest. Would Richt now have interest in talking to Miami?

On Monday, James got the answer he wanted. The Miami contingent met with Richt on Tuesday at a neutral-site location. Though James and Richt serve on the Football Oversight Committee together, they had never met in person. The two sides talked for between four and five hours. Richt asked his fair share of questions. “I covered all the bases and things I think are crucially important as far as staff, as far as support staff, support programs for players, academic support and how did that work, and all these kinds of things,” Richt said. They also discussed facilities, briefly hitting on the opportunity to get an indoor practice facility built. That still remains the No. 1 item on James’ facilities agenda.”

Everybody wants to overthink this. The Bama game showed how far behind that program we, and everybody else, really were/are. While the fanbase wanted to believe we had a shot against Bama at home, I’m sure our coaches knew long before going into that game what the talent gap was. The UT game was just crushing for all the obvious reasons, and then we look so flat against Mizzou something needed to change to light a spark. The question is not “Why Bauta?” but “What happened to Ramsey?” So Bauta is thrown into the game…remember all of the Fall practice talk about how he was the hardest worker, etc.? Team needed leadership under center. We lost FL, and while some believe that also meant we lost the SECe, reality was we certainly weren’t going to win the SEC. But we did go on to run the table, and that’s the coaching staff’s job.

Shorter: Bad team needed to gamble, did, and lost. No conspiracy. Raise your hand if you truly believe Lambert would have beaten that gator D.

I have a hard time accepting the premise that Bauta was “fucked over” by the former coaching staff. The kid is a competitor. I’m sure he looked at it as a great opportunity. Sure it didn’t work out, but he was able to transfer to another program where he could again compete to start. Where did his start in the WLOCP affect his “career” as a football player? Would he be a lock for the pros if he hadn’t started that game? Would he be starting for UGA right now if not for that game? I just don’t see it.
