Mark Richt reminds (UF grad) @aadelsonESPN that it’s the GEORGIA-Florida game, not the Florida-Georgia game…

… but you can’t kick Athens out of the coach.
“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23

This. I been workin’ on my FU grad wife for 28 years now and she still can’t get it right. Them people are sloooooow learners. But then again, she’s 20-8 on me during the course of our marriage so there is that.

My best friend attended Florida…for 7 years (no, not a doctor or lawyer) and we would go to the game together every year. We got into an arguement about GA/FL or FL/GA and his reasoning for me insisting on GA/FL was, and I quote “you only say that because G comes before F in the alphabet.”…..sloooooow learners indeed.

I grew up with this game being a South Ga home game, I view it this way as a reminder to the portion of the fan base that wants to move the game to a home and home destroying a great tradition.

See Reservoir Dawg’s post above. 20-8 in favor of Florida the last 28 years. Helluva “great tradition.”

We were 42-22-2 before that 28 year stretch. The location of the game has nothing to do with the outcome.

And everything to do with Spurrier rising to power there while we were dealing with Goff and Donnan. Richt then couldn’t get us over the hump down there, even after facing 4 different head coaches. Maybe, just maybe, we’ve found our guy to beat UF consistently again. It won’t matter, though, if he can’t get over the Vandy hump…

Don’t forget the Meyer years either. If Terrence Edwards catches that pass, we could have been 2-1 against Zook (with only a 3 point loss) and 3-1 against Boom. I could be wrong, but I don’t think McElwain is going to be a Spurrier / Meyer quality coach. We are still 50-42-2 against those bastards.
LikeLike
Really? McElwain isn’t that quality of a HC? He won the SEC East his first season. Let’s talk about how good he is 10 years from now. He’s looking a whole lot better right now than what UGA got from the Saban coaching tree. I hope I am wrong but fear that I am right about that.

That B.S. may have been accurate before someone decided BOTH teams had to wear home jerseys now … But it’s always GA-FL in my heart no matter what.

Most of Richt’s tenure one team did wear a visiting jersey, maybe it is part of a mind set that kept him from having a winning record in the game.

who cares which school they want to mention first? Back in the 80s, when we were busy owning the Gators, we would always rush back to Atlanta on Sunday so we could get home in time to watch the Charley Pell Show. We were endlessly entertained by Charley after a Gator loss. Charley was also famous for snottily correcting reporters, etc. that it was the “FLORIDA-Georgia game.”
Me, I could give a rat’s ass which school anyone mentions first. Ain’t got a thing to do with who wins. I just care about winning the game, which at the moment, is a matter of great discomfort to me. But I was there in 85 when number 1 ranked Florida got hammered in the FLORIDA-Georgia game by huge underdog UGA with a handful of “rinky dinky backs” like Tim Worley, Keith Henderson, et al.
Just win, baby.

It’s things like this that remind me of how disappointing it was that they axed this guy. I hope more than anyone that it works, but I thought then and think now that we’d be in good shape (6-1) going into tomorrow had we stayed the course. It’s done and I’m hoping we replicate “the process” in Athens without the unseemly baggage, but it’s still sad.
I wanted to see CMR carried off in Pasadena or Glendale etc.. having gotten there doing things the way they are supposed to be done. Oh well. Beat them damn gators!

They’d likely be 5-2 or 4-3, regardless. There would still be a lack of offensive line talent, receivers and pass rushers. They’d still be playing a bunch of underclassmen. On top of that, the biggest bright spot among the assistants, Pruitt, was going to be gone.
LikeLike
This. It was going to be a damn near complete rebuild no matter what. Schotty and Pruitt were none. Sale too.
So we were looking at new DC, OC, and OL coach no matter what, with the same flawed roster with no OTs, an 18 year old QB, and only one upperclassman DL.
It was going to be a mess no matter what.

Lots of unfounded assumptions here. But hell if you make up enough facts up in your head, you can be right about anything.
That offensive line did ok last year until the first play vs. UT. I really don’t think that Nick (or Sony) had any issues running the ball save the Alabama game, but who doesn’t? This year we struggle against Nicholls and Vandy to run the ball with the same linemen. Different scheme, different results.

They lost two starters off that line. And what was made up? What were the assumptions. Everyone knew Pruitt was gone.

“Everyone” was making assumptions. I say if CMR stayed, CJP would have stayed. Will would be at Bama and Smart and Tucker at USCe.
Our issues aren’t at the tackle positions. They are on the interior. Those are pretty much the same guys as last year. They are trying to power block with players better suited for zone blocking.

Who can be surprised that CMR would remain classy and loyal? In fifteen plus years, he never missed a step, don’t expect him to now. Despite the shoddy treatment for the past several years, he remains a man of integrity and character, He loved UGA and Athens and will always be a DGD regardless of the haters’ comments and character assassination. And, anyone who says Florida/Georgia should be corrected…on the spot.

Mark Richt is a class guy and that is all that needs to be said about that .
I don’t think too many here are attacking the guy’s character as you say- with the exception being one guy saying he purposely threw last year’s UF game. Are there other instances of attacking the man’s integrity I am missing? Maybe there are as I don’t read every single comment but my take is that few are attacking Richt the man.
Now, Richt the coach is a different story. The nature of this blog and this season there are going to be continual comparisons of Richt versus Kirby and rehashing Richts tenure like the Bauta post today.
It is not “character assassination” to point out Richt had some coaching blind spots and did some dumb crap during his tenure. Not everyone is a “hater” if you are not in the mindset that Richt was a great coach.

And that’s happened to Kirby already with the blind spots and the dumb crap, but I don’t want him characterized that way any more than I want Richt characterized that way. You can take your description and stick it where the sun don’t shine.

You might consider doing the same with the idiotic opinionated view of the coaching ability that won us 10 games/season.
LikeLike
Was not quite 10 games a season. But, go ahead and round up to inflate what really happened.
Also, we play a twelve game schedule and everyone goes to a bowl so really it is a 13 game season. So, if some other coach had a 9.7-3.3 record would you consider that a “great” accomplishment?
Also, I made the comment Richt did some dumb stuff- hey, did you happen to catch the Senators post today about Bauta starting the Cocktail party last year? That is an example of a dumb move or are you going to argue that was a great coaching ?
Take your red and black goggles off and accept that we have averaged 4 losses a season this decade and we have only had 2 good seasons since 2005. Not exactly “greatness”.

Actually, there was a continual stream of attacks last year specifically that you must have missed. The new one is certainly a weird one, but the others went well beyond on the field complaints. Look, I get the school of thought that 10-12 years can generate a “we need fresh thinking, more energy” type comments, happens in business management, coaching, etc., but our group of fanatics went far beyond, to the point it split the fan base (much like what has happened in our over all society) where there can be no civil dialogue or remembrance of what he accomplished.
Just like your position that he didn’t coach the bowl game so he didn’t win 10 games last year, why would anyone deny that wasn’t his team against PSU? This program won 40 games the last 4 years. Period. And it was Mark Richt’s program, good or bad. And it was damned good for almost all of this century, much better than our “norm”. Yet some would throw him off a cliff if they could and never allow us to be united over their zealous feelings, regardless of hoe irrational they might be. Yep, I resent that. Change could occur without the animosity, and we could all look at the good position we have been in…except for some small minds who want to stomp on a good man, and a solid coach who left us better than he found us. I just hope it hasn’t been squandered by shallow, myopic thinkers. I support KS and hope he does great, but there is no need for the continued drivel thaty keeps the flames of last fall burning. Some need to grow up, but I am not sure it is an age thing that prevents it, just small minds.

This is exactly what is wrong. We argue about which team’s name comes first but ignore that the game is played as an away game for Georgia every year leading to an insanely one-sided result for comparable programs. See Reservoir Dawg’s post above about how he is married to an FU grad and the Dawgs are 8-20 during his 28 years of marriage.

Mayor, the reason UGA has lost so much in Jacksonville recently isn’t because the game is located in the state of Florida. It’s because this has been the greatest stretch of football in Florida history and we have not had the same stretch in our program.
LikeLike
Exactly. There are 40k Georgia fans in the stadium. Location of the game has zero to do with our success/lack of success.

First, one thing has nothing to do with the other. You can hold that it’s Georgia-Florida AND that the game shouldn’t be played in Florida simultaneously. Second, Georgia has lost this game for a number of reasons over the years. I would put the fact that it’s played in Florida somewhere around 363rd on the list, ahead of the premiere of Seinfeld in 1990 and behind moon cycles.

I like to call it “The Jacksonville Game.”
I once read – here, I think – a Gator comment that he hated Georgia fans because they called it “The Jacksonville Game” which made him feel like we didn’t even consider the fact that there was another team involved. It demeaned him and his team, he felt. I’m sure this was an old, pre-Spurrier Gator fan who dealt with a lot of what we’ve had to deal with over the last 25 years. You know? Showing up with the better team and losing by 15-20 points kind of crap.
So, in honor of that one Florida fan and of those happier times of long ago when we knew we were going to win, I call it “The Jacksonville Game.”

you have more evidence of the existence of BIgfoot than you do for that statement. If you didn’t like him as a UGA coach, be happy. What difference should it make to you now where he works, and why would you grumble that he says good things about UGA?
