    I’ll believe it when I see it. The coaches seem so smart when they are talking about how they want to deploy the players…then when game time comes it never resembles the verbal description.

    It’s tiring.

    I love the tight ends, but they are not going to be the consistent big play threat down the field. You have to have a guy who can stretch the field to get safeties to play 2-deep rather than crowd the line. Malcolm Mitchell, AJ (of course), Scott-Wesley, and Chris Conley were those kind of players. They opened the field for the slot receivers and the tight ends and kept safeties out of the box in the running game.

      Actually, making the TEs a significant part of the offense can have the effect of helping the WRs stretch the field as they require another section of the field to be covered. May seem illogical but the run doesn’t always open up the pass (we proved that last season), sometimes you have to pass to open up the run. Everything is so mingled in football, you just need a better chess player at OC.

        I can agree with all of that. One of the problems last year was that the TEs were staying in for pass protection. It made it easier for the secondary to control the outside guys. You’re right … we need some upgrades of the chess pieces but really need another chess master.

      Our TEs are always the key to “this season”, sort of like how I’m always going to clean the gutters “tomorrow”.

    Man – I remember all the talk about how Schottenheimer was really going to utilize the TE’s in the passing game.

      And I will admit to being one who felt an NFL OC would do exactly that. Just never happened in 2015, I was very wrong.

    Just imagine what the poor players feel like. You know the TE group is recruited by pitches like this too. “Oh, our offensive scheme relies heavily on getting you the ball Jeb, you want receptions and runs? The TE position is very crucial to our offense”. Then they just block for their entire career….

    Well if we ever get a real offensive line the TE’s might be able to actually catch passes. Remember the wise words “Those that do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.” UGA is a poster child for this.

    Another suggestion would be to get Woerner to play at around 235… split him out for several different looks and get him the ball in space. That would create a mismatch and we would still have four tight ends to block.

    Have Mecole fake the zone read then step up and hit Woerner in the flat. We could run at least four plays off this one base concept.

    Know what else is tiring… the stupid AJC will find a way to write this SAME story at least 7 more times with a different headline before the season. I think they write TOO much at times..

    That’s because tight ends can be recruited at a dime-a-dozen.

    Offensive tackles are a different story.

    I’ll take the bait like I do every year! I’d love to see a single back two tight set with a good line. Put Nauta and Blazevich in and make the D guess if we’re running power or 3/4/5 receiver routes. Over and over. Lather rinse repeat indeed!

    We’ll see a lot of that formation, but until the line improves I expect they’ll mostly be blocking.
