The article to which this is a part is a conceptual mess, but what does come through is how bad the SEC as a whole has been of late evaluating and developing quarterback talent. Check it out:
Between 2007 and 2016, current SEC schools signed 67 blue-chip quarterbacks — either 4- or 5-star prospects per the 247Composite rankings. Out of that group, only 32 stayed with their original school. Thirty-three transferred, while two signed to play baseball before arriving on campus.
From 2007 to 2014, 60 percent of the SEC’s blue-chip quarterback recruits transferred. The 2015 and 2016 seasons were not included in that statistic because several of those quarterbacks have yet to get on the field.
Astonishingly, all nine quarterbacks signed in 2011 and 2012 finished their careers at different schools — Jeff Driskel, Kiehl Frazier, Jerrard Randall, Christian LeMay, Jacoby Brissett, Matt Davis, Maty Mauk, Zeke Pike and Patrick Towles.
The article implies that a rash of transfers is what’s caused the recent decline at the position, but the transfers aren’t the cause. They’re the effect. Georgia didn’t fight to keep LeMay on the roster, because LeMay washed out at the position. That’s why all nine of those quarterbacks are gone. Of course, if you’re a head coach facing a hole at the position from that sort of departure, you’ve got little choice but to take a shot at asking a kid leaving another program to parachute in to provide depth, if nothing else. Necessity, mother, and all that.
In any event, it’s fair to say revolving doors aren’t a guarantee of great quarterback play. Just ask Florida. In fact,
Ultimately, failing to commit to a long-term project eventually catches up with teams. Only one transfer quarterback since 2004 led the conference in passer rating — some kid named Cameron Jerrell Newton at Auburn in 2010. Otherwise, every other passing leader has been a homegrown prospect.
Hmmm… maybe there’s something to Kirby trying to stockpile recruits at the position.

Everyone has a right to an opinion. I must be in the dark about how inept he is, or how much better Eason has become. I know I am hoping for much better QB play than we have had the past two years, and I don’t care which QB brings us that. Don’t understand why so many have a dog in this fight, and yet to hear one reasonable opinion as to how sitting either of these quarterbacks would be advantage. Believe in the “next man up” philosophy myself, and that means having a Plan B ready to go….sitting Fromm would deny us that.

Getting spacing between classes for QBs is as relevant an opinion to me as your “next man up” philosophy is. YMMV, of course.

I truly get the advantage that is assumed, but feel it is more than offset by the issue of not protecting against another 2005 JAX situation in what, I consider, is a pivotal year for this program.
I also feel any sense of urgency to accomplish this separation may blur the evaluation lines should we see continued mediocrity at the QB position in early games. we don’t need any reluctance to do what MIGHT be best for this year, and the program’s perception.
The whole red shirting concept has evolved to where many may be stuck in the past in their outlook on how it applies to today’s athlete and how coaches look at getting it done ASAP. Just an opinion, not throwing any barbs.

All we have here are opinions.(Kirby doesn’t seem to be getting my calls and emails.:) ) and I respect yours. That being said, It won’t matter if you have the love child of Peyton Manning and Cam Newton back there if they don’t get some help up front.

You may disagree but I do think we have another Peyton Manning back there. Last season he just got no blocking. How well would a college freshman Peyton Manning have done behind the 2016 UGA OL with this coaching staff making the decisions? I’m saying about the same as Eason.

Peyton may have commanded a little more respect and effort, ergo leadership, thanks to being SEC royalty. But I think JE’s got more physical skills. But you are not wrong

IF Eason doesn’t get it done, Fromm will play, it is as simple as that.

You redshirt Fromm because he is going to be a 5 year guy. He doesn’t have the measureables of Eason and isn’t going to leave early for the NFL. I’d rather have a RS senior QB in 2021 when the machine should be really rolling rather than waste a year on getting mop up duty. He’ll still get reps in practice and he can get in game experience next year in what should be Eason’s last year in Athens.

I don’t know if Fromm should Redshirt or not, but if we burn that shirt we have to play him then. I mean give him meaningful snaps, not just mop-up duty. Playing time against Tennessee & Florida, not just Samford. Then we’re flirting with a two-quarterback system, and that’s dangerous territory.

Another variable has been thrown into the Fromm redshirt algorithm. We all know how crazy recruiting and the promises made are, so don’t beat up on the messenger here. There are some theories floating around that Fromm won’t be redshirted, at least in part, to create separation for a certain top in-state dual threat QB.

Doesn’t matter why but we need two guys ready at all times….top flight guys. I hear all the talk about Fields and UGA but I don’t see the fit with UGA’s scheme or personnel. Looks like a better fit for FSU both in terms of scheme and class separation . Give me Zeus next week and I will be happy with whomever else we get in the backfield.
