Another genius shown the door

Say goodbye to Bert’s boss.

Jeff Long will not return as the Arkansas athletics director, sources told FootballScoop Wednesday. Sources told FootballScoop the announcement is set for today. Tyler Thomason of KARK-TV in Little Rock first reported the news.

Long’s contract was set to expire on June 30. The Arkansas board of directors held a lengthy meeting last week in which no action was taken on Long or Bret Bielema’s respective employment statuses.

I doubt that’s good news for Bielema.  If so, this has the potential of being a real shit show in terms of find a new head coach.

  2. Arkansas, Nebraska, Tennessee would be really well served to go weird. Find a quirky Air Raid or triple guy. Something to counterbalance the shit show that is their in state recruiting base.

The one thing about Tennessee that could save them long term is how fast Nashville is growing. More recruits coming out of there than ever before. But they have to DOMINATE it for it to payoff. That remains to be seen.

I’m thinking Charlie Weiss to UT with Derek Dooley as DC. Now that’s pretty weird!

Going to be a lot of coaches moving around this off season. The early signing period has me more interested in the coaching hires than normal.

    Suggestion.
    Mike Bobo.
Do not be surprised if this name surfaces in Hawg or Vol country.
    He knows offenses.
    He knows recruiting.

Agent Bobo to Knoxville would be great.

I don’t think Bobo would go to Tennessee or Florida, and I don’t think either of those schools would consider him (for a variety of reasons on both sides). However, as you mention, Arkansas is a more intriguing situation. I don’t think Bobo should really consider it either, because with Bama, Auburn, LSU, etc., its just gonna be a graveyard for his career…

I would agree with you if he had a better record at CSU. This year looked pretty promising for them early on, but now they’re third in their division. If he wins a conference championship there sometime in the next couple of years, I could see him getting some offers. If he keeps putting up 7 win season (maybe only 6 this year) he’s probably fired.

Still thinks….. SOMEBODY is gonna hire Les Miles. I feel like he would be good short term to get a program back on track. Maybe an Arkansas or TN.

Guess Enos wished he never had a non-compete clause, huh

We’ll have an opening for a 10th assistant in about 6 weeks. Does Fountain, Jay Johnson, or someone else already in the program get promoted? Do we get a QB coach to take pressure off Chaney? Do any of our assistants or analysts get poached or dumped? If I were looking for a ST assistant Fountain would be on my radar.

It’ll be interesting to see what Kirby does with the staff, and how he uses that assistant opening. If Enos has any recruiting ability to go along with his QB/OC coaching talents, he might very well be a candidate.

If Long really was stupid enough to give Bert a $15MM buyout, surely that was enough for the Trustees to fire him “for cause”…

EXACTLY. Damn, I didn’t realize it was more expensive to buy out Bielema than it was Butch. What a terrible deal for the school.

If Bert goes so does Enos? If Les Miles wants to coach in the SEC again he will prolly take the job at UTK. That way he may only have to face Saban if he has a great year.

Some school may need Jeff’s vote on the playoff selection committee very soon.

If I am Arky, I would go off the grid and find a young fireball that doesn’t try to go mano y mano with the big boys; in other words, the opposite of Bert. No use trying to hire one of the expensive golden boys, need something unorthodox.

Question: if Bert leaves, Enos is free to come to UGA, which just happens to need an OC, right? That was Kirby’s first choice, and he would definitely be better than Door #2 has been.
