It’s that time of year.

The last home game of any season is a bittersweet affair, and this year seems particularly so.  I’m packing for my last Athens tailgate of 2017, with the knowledge that I won’t be doing so again for a few months.

That’s a little sad, true, but it almost feels trivial in comparison to what the seniors must be feeling this morning, knowing that in a few hours they’ll be setting foot on the Sanford Stadium field for the last time in their careers.  As I posted earlier, this bunch has been through a lot and given a lot to get to where they are today.  For that, they are to be commended and celebrated.

And there’s still plenty left to play for to be celebrated, as no doubt both we and the players have been reminded of all week.  To tweak a cliche, today is the first day of the rest of the 2017 season.  Win out the next three games — admittedly a tall order — and everything any college football team hopes for as it works out in the August heat is still there.

For that to happen, though, starting today, heads and hearts have to be clear and focused, all the way down from the head coach to the lowliest walk-on.  If these guys are still suffering from a hangover from the Auburn game, it’s hard to see how they’ll meet that ultimate goal, not to mention avoid being embarrassed in the SECCG.

Sure, there are plenty of on the field matchups and stats that may prove relevant.  Benny Snell is having a fine season for Kentucky and clearly has to be an area of concern for the defense.  You can also worry about the ‘Cats trying to challenge Georgia’s secondary and whether Georgia’s offensive line has the gas in the tank to reset today and control the line of scrimmage as no doubt UK follows the same script most of Georgia’s opponents have this season in loading the box to stop Chubb and Michel.

Stats and strategy are fine to consider.  You can watch tape and look at numbers to get a feel for what each team brings to the table.  What you can’t measure or evaluate in advance is whether a team is ready to play.  That’s Kirby’s big test today.  If Georgia shows up with the same mindset that’s led it to nine wins, the Dawgs will roll.  If not… well, I’d rather not think about that right now.

For what it’s worth, I believe their heads will be on straight today, if for no other reason than because of the seniors.  They certainly deserve it.  GATA, boys.

Consider this your invite to post game day comments.  Hopefully, there will be a lot more sweet than bitter.

Nice synopsis…….the Dawgs will show IMO, too much to play for.

  3. Exactly where my thoughts are. Do we play down to our opponent or do we play like a top 10 team against an outmatched opponent? The answer will tell us a lot about the leadership of this senior class and the mental side of the coaches.

Dawgs roll big today – no hangover or anything of the sort. As I mentioned the other day, we are looking at an 11-1 season, yet all my dawg friends are still in mourning after last weekend, which I find a bit bizzare. A little perspective is needed, as this is a special season for us.

No, we probably won’t win the SECC or get to the playoffs, but this season is the springboard season I predicted last off-season that would springboard us to greater things ahead. Enjoy what we have; after all we could be UF or UT fans right now.

Everybody, and I mean everybody laughed at me all during the long off-season when I said we would go either 11-3 or 12-2. They thought I was nuts but I knew what was to come, thanks to a few well placed folks I knew who were giving me the straight scoop. Now those same people are downtrodden because we lost to AU and most likely will miss out on the playoffs. Insane.

Agreed. Win today and we sweep the East, something we have never done before. That’s something to celebrate and be proud of. If we win these next two games, this year will have been a resounding success, regardless of what happens in the SECCG/bowl games.

We’ve certainly had the humility lesson Kirby warned about. Now we see, again, what kinda thing we got going on over there, there. My hope is that we taught our children well and we apply that acquired knowledge to Kentucky.

I spect we will know early.

Agree about the springboard reference, but we sure are losing a bunch of starters in 2018.

Indeed we are – but look all the talent coming up behind them. The D takes a small step back next year but the O will be better. And 2019 looks utterly sick.

  7. This is the first game I can go to now that my kids sports season has ended. Anybody got a decent place to eat on the way into town? Parking pass is in Journalism lot between stadium and downtown. Just looking to grab something decent without an annoying wait. Couldn’t name 3 places to eat other than the usual chains every town has.

Hope the team gives the seniors the send-off they deserve. I hope Ramsey gets to play and throws a TD. I hope Nick and Sony both go for 100+. I hope Lorenzo and Bellamy each get a strip sack TD. And I hope the crowd is electric.

I think Dawgs win, but not a blowout. KY is about at the SC level and the Wildcat gave us trouble in Lexington last year. Wouldn’t rule out that our passing offense could pop today, but I think something like 31-17. Will take any win and no injuries. Also expect an Eason sighting in relief, hope he gets to throw some and get the rust off. As I said in the summer, we need two guys ready…especially now with the stakes so high.

It looks like it’s the CFB playoff or the Clemson/Miami loser for Georgia unless McGarity manages to whine his way out of that.

That’s not going to be a fun game though if so, seriously. Has nothing to do with Mark Richt. Has a lot more to do with Manny Diaz and good front 7’s completely baffling Chaney.

  22. Would be nice to see us start trying to stretch the field with the passing game. At least try a few times. Our rather Fromm throw an int on a deep pass than these short ones. Our running game and entire offense need it if we’re gonna compete to end the year. It’s time to take the training wheels off.

It is on the player to not get an INT or knock the ball away.
It is however, bad coaching to not be ready for what killed you last week, the wildcat.

Kirby needs to give some serious thought about the expectations he has in an OC. Any damn fool can call these running plays. Why spend 800k on Chaney?

And the RPO only works if the QB keeps it once in a while to keep the D honest.

Ok, the undefeated team that has a great red zone D and a stable of running backs that take over in the 3rd Q showed up. Not sure we learned much else. Fromm stats look great, but eye test says he looked a little shaky until he ran the QB draw and got his uni dirty. Just not clear what our response will be against a big fast D that not just commits, but can stop the run. Like, you know….the Iron Bowl winner.

Maybe Kirby really did throw away that game last week. If true, could prove to be the single greatest coaching move ever.

    That Kirby…he’s a sly one.
